Prototype 2 Preorders Get Radnet Service Free

Service to reward preorders with bonus content.

It’s no secret that publishers are not fans of the used games market.  They’ve attempted to sway gamers to buy new whether it’s through online passes, the promise of a free downloadable game or pre-order DLC.  With Prototype 2, Activision is taking another route to incentivize gamers.  Those that preorder the game will get free access to Radnet – a program that will reward users with additional content.

The program is planned to launch on April 24, 2012 and will reward its members with over 55 free pieces of additional content over a seven week period after the game’s launch.  Content is said to include “in-game events, challenges, avatar items, dynamic themes and behind-the-scenes videos, as well as bonus mutations for Prototype 2’s main campaign” and will release on a weekly basis.

Additionally, those that participate in all of Radnet’s weekly challenges will be rewarded with the “ultimate shape-shifting reward” which won’t be revealed until March.

The press release indicates that access to Radnet will be free while supplies last, implying that the service will be available for a fee for those who decide not to preorder or to buy the game used.

Prototype 2 will be released on April 24, 2012 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Maybe I don't fully understand, but when they say they are reserving "in-game events" and "bonus mutations" for people that pre order, I really don't see a difference between this and Online Passes.

This is more palatable to me than the basic online pass.  When you tell me that I can't access a portion of the basic game unless I input a pass I'd be miffed.  These are events that are time specific like Call of Duty: Elite's "extra experience" or their tournaments.  They aren't important to getting the full game experience.  Preordering just determines that you don't have to pay, because even if you buy the game used you'll still have access to everything the base game has to offer.

This is a limited time bonus (first seven weeks of release) that those that preordered get to enjoy for free.
