John Carmack's QuakeCon Keynote Address Informs, Tests Endurance of Attendees

John Carmack pontificates on the future of virtual reality, the viability of Ouya, a completed id iOS game, and tons of other topics.

John Carmack gave his QuakeCon keynote this year which focused on his efforts and thoughts about virtual reality.  Following the release of Rage, Carmack allowed himself to let loose, buy some VR headsets and get his engineering mind locked in on a new technology.  Carmack spoke for over three hours, wandering away and then back time after time to the virtual reality theme.  His sleuthing and coding has led to the creation of a playable VR demo of Doom 3 (which he tried to temper expectations for).  Virtual reality has been portrayed by the media to be a realistic life simulator, but Carmack assures us that there is still plenty of work to be done.  These warnings led into musings on the state of display technology, cloud gaming, Ouya, and many other topics during a three hour one-man show that most audience members couldn’t endure ‘til the end.

Rise of the Triad Revealed at QuakeCon 2012

Apogee Software reveals a new first person shooter to the most concentrated form of the key demographic imaginable.

Apogee Software of Duke Nukem Trilogy fame took the stage first at QuakeCon 2012 to reveal their newest old-game-rebirth project, Rise of the Triad. This first person shooter has players battling not-Nazis (that look a lot like Nazis) called Triad. Rise of the Triad’s big reveal was extremely violent and clearly born of the makers of Duke Nukem.  The quick teaser trailer showed a brutal killing of someone begging for mercy as the crowd cheered, followed by many similar moments punctuated with some uh, impressive voice work yelling “f*ckin’ A!” and similar witticisms.

Jeremy McGrath’s Offroad Review

This bare-bones offroad racer isn't worth your dollars.

It’s hard to really leverage any complaints against Jeremy McGrath’s Offroad. It’s an inoffensive racer that’s pretty easy to pick up and play. For experienced racing fans it skews easy, but there are fleeting moments of joy while overtaking your seven opponents and dealing with the various tight turns, dips, and humps of the track. Most of the time, it’s a fairly mundane experience, requiring very little effort or struggle to win.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron Hands On Preview

High Moon’s latest impresses.

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is on its way to being just as good, if not better than its predecessor if my latest hands-on with the game is any indicator. 2010’s War for Cybertron left a lasting impression on me, and was one of my favorite games of that year. It finally set the bar for what a Transformers game should be like with the right amount of action, fluidity of gameplay,  and the overall production value. Thankfully, Fall of Cybertron continues that trend. The latest demo, which includes single and multiplayer components shows that High Moon has learned from some of its mistakes in the last game and is trying hard to make sure that Fall of Cybertron is a better game overall.

Nerds Without Pants Episode 2: Strange Love

More like Fifty Shades of GAME, amiright?

Sex. Now that I have your attention, why is it something that gaming podcasts don’t talk about very often? Sex sells, and game developers have used it more and more in their games over the years. Your favorite nerdy trio takes off their pants, turns on their mics, and talk at length about sex in vidya games. But before that we talk some recent games, including Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy, Slender, and Unchained Blades.
