Nerds Without Pants Episode 13: 2012: The Year in Podcast

We're going streaking!

It’s 2013 and somehow we survived the apocalypse! Time to ring in the new year in style, with a new episode of Nerds Without Pants. This week we’re a nerd down, as Patrick is convalescing after minor surgery. Filling in is the one and only Ty “Fighter”, who long time listeners will know as Rob’s oft-mentioned buddy. Since every podcast is doing their game of the year lists we decided to buck that trend and instead take a look back at the year that was.

Wipeout 3 Review

I feel as if a huge opportunity has been missed.

I’m aware that this is going to sound insane, but I was actually excited to give Wipeout 3 a whirl, despite being a licensed game for one of the more ridiculous shows on television. Inherently the show’s content lends itself to interesting 3D obstacle-based platforming, but more importantly, developer Behavior Interactive is responsible for Doritos Crash Course, which on the surface bears many similarities. Though free and sponsored by Doritos, the game took some serious cues from Donkey Kong Country and made for one of the more interesting platforming experiences to be released in a long while. Unfortunately, Wipeout 3 doesn’t channel that energy and instead provides an occasionally sloppy, mostly boring, licensed game.

Assassin's Creed III: Liberation Review

If an Animus ever comes to exist, I feel bad for the poor guy who has to retread my footsteps through this game.

A full-scale handheld Assassin’s Creed game has been a long time coming. However, the hardware and storage space issues have always been a limitation for Ubisoft to bring such an ambitious game to the space. Thanks to the PlayStation Vita, Ubisoft Sofia was given the green light to move forward, netting Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation. Unfortunately, despite the hardware’s capability, it’s clear this adventure is scaled back in every way imaginable and rife with many of the bugs found in its mainline console brethren.

Hitman: Absolution Preview

Remember, information is the weapon!

It’s hard to believe that it’s been six years since Hitman: Blood Money hit the scene. It was released in that heady time around the launch of the “seventh generation” of consoles, when it was still common to see games come out for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 alongside the Xbox 360. As such, Blood Money wasn’t technically a seventh generation game; it was designed with the PCs and consoles of 2005 and upscaled to run on the 360. That was my introduction to the series, and even though the game came across as dated by the time I got to it in 2009 I was impressed with the sheer amount of options for completing objectives in every level.

QuakeCon 2012 Details Charge Down the Corridor

A healthy line up of guests, events, and demos should draw in the crowds.

The date and location of this year’s QuakeCon have been known for some time, but Zenimax has just provided the first details of what will be on the show floor.  The event will kick off with John Carmack’s keynote address at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas on August 2.  A host of other panels will follow through the duration of the conference that wraps on August 5.  Panels like “The Game of Making Games” and an Idle Thumbs Podcast will provide a steady flow of things to do while giving your rig a break from the “world’s largest LAN party.”

South Park: The Stick of Truth Preview

Respect this game's f'n authoritah!

I’m not sure why, but South Park: The Stick of Truth ended up being one of my favorite games at the Microsoft press conference. It could have something to do with the fact that I’m a huge fan of the show and watch it religiously. Or it may have been due to how annoyed and underwhelmed I was with the focus of the conference. It even could have been because Trey Parker and Matt Stone were far and away the most entertaining—and real—people to get on stage the entire time. Whatever the reason, this game could end up becoming one of my favorite games of 2013, even in a year that seems poised to have the most crowded release schedule of all time.
