Brand-new franchise is "radically different."

As we head into 2012, it’s time to start looking forward to what’s next in the realm of video games. If you’re at all interested in what’s coming down the pipeline, you’ll probably want to set your DVR for the Spike TV VGAs this Saturday. The awards ceremony leaves much to be desired for many enthusiasts, but the show will give us our first look at a ton of games, including the next game from Epic. But why would the President of Epic Games, Mike Capps, be scared about unveiling this all-new IP?

If you don't buy this game, I will have a grudge against you, and you don't want me haunting your dreams.

Since its humble 32-bit beginnings, the PlayStation brand has been home to some truly unique and sometimes downright weird games from its native Japan. The PlayStation gave us games like Incredible Crisis, Bust a Groove, One Piece Mansion, and Rising Zan: Samurai Gunman. The trend continued on PS2 with Mr. Mosquito, Katamari Damacy, Gitaroo Man, and Okage: Shadow King. Sadly, with the video game industry being such a volatile, cutthroat business in the current climate, releasing quirky games like these has become a gamble that rarely pays off for publishers. Thankfully, we still have handheld machines like the PSP to give us our experimental Japanese games. Enter Corpse Party, a digital release for PSP that is so niche that I’m surprised it was translated. Surprised, but happy; this is one of those unique, under-the-radar games that is not to be missed.

The house that made Agent 47 is branching out.

Square Enix is certainly doing its best to come out swinging as a publisher of Western games. Since the acquisition of developer Eidos and the success of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, SE has gone on record as having a plan to have ten core franchises, many of which are Western made titles. Hitman is on that list, and while the franchise creator IO Interactive is hard at work on Hitman: Absolution, the developer will be working on a new IP after work is completed on their contract killer simulator.

PS3 owners get a week long head start on the online mayhem.

Battlefield 3 will be getting its first major DLC pack soon, but if you own it on PlayStation 3, you’ll get it even sooner. That’s part of EA making nice with PS3 owners who didn’t get their promised free copy of Battlefield 1943 with their new purchase of BF 3. The official release date for “Back to Karkand” is December 13, with the PS3 version launching on December 6.

Also, multiplayer coming to the Dragon Age franchise?

It seems that EA needs to get their employees to quiet down, as we have had a lot of rumors leaking out from the company about tons of upcoming projects. There was the story earlier in the week about the possibility of Dead Space getting spun off into different genres, and the rumors of a sequel to Dante’s Inferno. You can add a couple more interesting tidbits to these rumors, as now we’re hearing about a new Army of Two game, and multiplayer coming to Dragon Age.
