I also would like to say 'hey' to my blog readers. I've been super swamped with personal projects, one of which will be mentioned in a soon-to-be blog. I hope you're all having an aweomse Spring.
What I Took Away After Helping My GF Play Tomb Raider (and Redbox Scams)

This isn't a review. My gf played the game. I occasionally watched and helped her get through tough shootouts. For what it's worth, I like the Tomb Raider reboot. Some impressions:
1 - It's obvious to me that Tomb Raider's style was heavily influenced by Resident Evil. Some of the battles and enemies felt right out of RE4. I don't mention this as a slight to Tomb Raider (I'm glad they pulled it off), but as a nod to RE4.
2 - Watching my gf struggle with the controls tells me that A - the casual gaming movement was a necessary evolution of mass market gaming, and B - there's still some work to be done. Not all women suck at manipulating dual-analog, but my gf does, and TR is her favorite franchise. To be fair, she completed about 80% of the game on her own.
3 - Helping her out also made me realize how much us enthusiastic game bloggers know about video games. Example:
gf: "Get me through this part"
me: "okay. (takes contoller, playing new TR for the first time) This is what's called a Quick Time Event. Any time you're in a situation like this, be aware that it's a QTE."
gf: "Okay, You're awesome. You make it look so easy."
me: (takes the compliment in stride, passes back the controller, humbly walks away.)
Another Example
gf: "I can't beat these guys. Help Me!"
me: "okay. (takes contoller, playing new TR for the second time) I see. This game employs what is called Snap Targeting. You don't really have to aim, just press LT and it will lock on for you. Sometimes, it will even help you find guys who are hidden in the shadows."
gf: "Okay. You're awesome. You make it look so easy."
me: (takes the compliment in stride, passes back the controller, and humbly walks away.)
Redbox Scam
My gf fell victim to a Redbox scam during her search for Tomb Raider. She came home so excited to play only to learn that someone had replaced the 360 disc with a scanned paper copy. Obviously, the scam worked and Redbox will have a crisis on their hands if a preventative measure isn't found. They reimbursed my gf 3 free rentals for her trouble.
