It was a busy and productive weekend. Also, tomorrow is the last day of BaD! I made it! Er, barring some unforeseen occurrence, that is.

Friday, we went to see Get Out. This was an excellent little horror thriller. For those that don’t know, this is the directorial debut of Jordan Peele of Key & Peele fame. He also wrote the film, and I felt like it was simultaneously a great homage to Alfred Hitchcock, a great modern horror movie, and a powerful look at how we treat race. I’m sure that a lot of the things that the main character experiences mirror what Jordan Peele has been through. As a man that is a mixture of races but usually passes for white I can’t speak to a lot of this, but it sure made me think.

Saturday, my girlfriend had to work, so I spent part of the day editing Nerds Without Pants, which will be out on Wednesday. The new recording day is throwing me off, and sadly some people’s comments didn’t make it into the show. Per Daftman’s suggestion, I will begin putting a submission deadline in the show post.

I also cracked into Shotcut and played around with editing my first video. Shotcut is free and has some good reviews, so I’m using this until I feel comfortable enough to upgrade to a paid piece of software. I took some gameplay of Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! that I recorded with a capture card and cut it together with one of my favorite OC Remixes: Little Mac’s Confession. Somehow, I accidentally cut off the last few minutes of the song, so the video is shorter than it should have been. But I was pleased with what I managed to do with very little instruction. I faded in, had the name of the song appear on screen, and did some nice transitions between boxers. The video features Glass Joe, Von Kaiser, and Piston Honda. I already saw a laundry list of things that I could do better, but for a quick first attempt I was happy.

Sunday, I recorded a short greeting to add to my Giant Bomb application. I did it in one take, and I felt very relaxed and pleased with my performance. I didn’t go off a script and forgot a couple points I wanted to make, but Giant Bomb is entirely unscripted, so I feel like it’s in keeping with the site’s style. I added a little homage to Ferris Bueller at the end, where I go to grab a game from my shelf, look back, and say “what, you’re still here? I don’t have anything else for you. Just give me a call, and I’ll see you on Monday.”

That last bit sells it, in my opinion. I did a nice fade in and out, and popped up my info right as I say “call me”. With that done, I finalized my application to Giant Bomb. I just hope that Jeff looks at my stuff. I’d love at least a phone call, but I know that the odds are rather slim. Still, I’m glad that I did it, and it also got me off my ass in regards to beginning my video editing journey.

Now, all we need is a little energon, and a lot of luck.

Didn't know you were mixed race, but I didn't think you looked white white in some photos you shared. Get Out had a lot more comedy than I was expecting. My theater was laughing for most of it ... I know some wasn't intentional, but there's really only two reactions you can have to that creepy maid: terrified or tickled. My theater seemed to be the latter. However, for people who have to deal with situations like that in real life, i could see a much different take.

Wonder if my comments met the deadline.

When you decide to upgrade, Adobe Cloud isn't a bad deal and comes with Premiere.

Good luck!

I'm literally listening to your comments as I edit right now. :)

Get Out had a lot of humor, but my audience was only laughing when appropriate until the very end. I think the moment right before the climax was so intense that when shit hit the fan the audience needed to laugh.
