WHOOSH!In today's blog, The Original Ser sets a personal best while getting mercilessly crushed.

*****

I'm sure there are those games out there that any one person gets to thining, "Yeah, I can freaking do this." For me, Salamander is one such game, mostly because I've always kinda liked Life Force but also because George keeps saying it's not so very good. Mostly on the basis that he sucks at it.

Today was the day that I 1-Credit-Cleared (1CC'd) Salamander and continued throgh to the second loop with serious intent and fervor. I managed to get to stage 2-4 without having to continue, which is not an easy feat to begin with. Along the way in Stage 2-2, I managed to get an interesting score:

WAT
Oooh, pixely.

Nifty, yes? It's too bad there wasn't a single unit score for something. It would have been rad if there was a 1 on the end of that. But when it was all said and done, what was my top score? Well, I managed to get over 1.4 million points (booyah!)

Since I was halfway through the game at continue I decided to see if I could beat the second loop all together. And wouldn't you know it? I failed in the hardest way imaginable. Stage 2-6. Central core defeated. I'm flying through to the end of the game, through a whole bunch of narrow-ass breaks in extending barriers. The music starts to fade. I'm just about there! Then, BLAM. I hit a freaking barrier. Not just any barrier, though. The very last freaking one. What's even worse was the heavy sense of déja-vu: In an earlier run that would have gotten me a 1CC, I died on my final continue and final life in the exact same spot!! Witness the fail thus:

There. Right there. At the end of the video. That was exactly where I finally bit it again today. Now I'll never know if there's a new ending or if there's a third loop or what. I'll never know!!

Well, until I try again. And I will. And I shall be victorious.

But first, I'm in need of producing a new video for Bullet Heaven. Two this week, actually, since I missed last week. But, I have the footage for at least the next two episodes. The PC-10gine is coming to a close fairly soon and then, hopefully, a new true-HD follow up to an incredible,  perfect game in Episode 70. Stay tuned.

Wait, are you playing this without THE CODE?  I played Life Force endlessly when I was a kid, but always used the code.  I don't have the skills not to.

At least Life Force has the code, but the NES game is a "director's cut" in and of itself. Salamander is quite a different game with definite power ups versus the gradius-style bar and it forces you to make due with stock lives and three credits. That's it. Oh, but on the plus side though, there is a fairly forgiving extend score, so you can earn a ton of lives... if you're good enough.

I love shmups but I've never been very good at them.  I don't have the reflexes and I don't have the vision.  I used to love playing Life Force though, and Thunder Force 2, and most recently Sine Mora.  I wish I was better at them though.

Once upon a time, I was not-so-good with them, but with years of prcatise, I've come to be pretty good. I still need to see if I can get any further in Aero Blasters with my seemingly new-found skills. That game was a real beast!

I truly wonder if I'll see the end in the near future... hopefuly... hopefully...

Ooooh I HATE long sections where you can die from hitting ONE thing.

I feel your pain, man.

Dude, you;re telling me. If there were no "checkpoint deaths" I'd have totally done it.
