here goes nothing:

- took a break from Ni No Kuni and started playing some Poker Night At The Inventory 2, a little card game I got for free months ago via PS Plus.  After spending a few hours with the game I can honestly say that Brock and Claptrap are the funniest characters in the game.  GLaDOS is pretty funny as well, though definitely not as funny as she was in Portal 2.  Sometimes the characters make really shitty calls.  It's hilarious to watch Claptrap or Ash go All-In on a 4-2 offsuit hole hand.  Anyway I ended up winning a tourney last night, after Brock has put The Orb up as a bounty, to sweeten the pot.  I was rewarded with an Army Of Brockness downloadable theme from the PSN  On the minus side, that game freezes and starts at least once every 5 minutes.  Be prepared for that shit.  I've yet  to learn all the tells, but it seems to me that when you're facing Ash and you're the only 2 left in the game....well that fucker bluffs EVERYTHING.

-I started reading a book about the rise of Counter Strike as an e-sport and its place in competitive gaming.  Its called Game Boys, and so far it reads smoothly.  I'm about a third of the way through it.  Even though this was all going down in the year 2000 through 2006 (the events of the book anyhow) it seems like it was AGES ago.  It just goes to show how much gaming has evolved over the course of a few short years.  It continues to evolve, and I love it!

- Xander's been playing Animal Crossing: New Leaf.  He likes to show me all the wacky stuff he collects.  I tried to get into it but Xander would go in an immediately change anything I'd done to the world.  He's a 6 year old control freak.

-Also been playing Bag It and R-Type II, though I think R Type II is better suited to a tablet, or maybe a phone with a larger screen than I have.  Sometimes the ship disappears beneath my thumbs.  The autofire option is nice though, ensuring that your spaceship blasts a steady bullet stream and thereby leaving the player to only control the pilot functions.

Bag It is pretty fun; it's a grocery-themed Tetris-like game that adds different bells and whistles, such as crushability of certain types of groceries, time limits, etc.  I didn't know that I was able to rotate the groceries for the first 10 rounds...so you can imagine how pissed off I was getting, even blaming the game for being unfair.  I even went in and re-adjusted my blog notes to reflect that it was indeed my own savage dumbassery and not the game at fault for the rought time I was having.

I really enjoyed New Leaf to the point where I had to make a conscious effort to remove the cartridge and take it out of my sight so I wouldn't be tempted to pop it back into the 3DS. Even now I have pangs of guilt for deserting my townsfolk. LOL

I'm not sure why but your blogs always show up twice in my inbox.

New Leaf is fun as hell....my boyo just won't let me make any lasting changes.  At all.  He's the mismatched King of Xanderville

That poker game sounds fun, but that game you won sounds like a lot of apps I've downloaded to my phone. lol

The only Game Boys I know of is The Cinema Snob's web series and movie of the same name, and of course the Game Boy. I need to buy a PS4 this year, if not just to experience all the online goodness I've missed by not buying a console or handheld since Gamecube and DS.

I don't blame Xander. With a game like that, I'd want everything where I put it. Sadly, I never got into Animal Crossing, as I didn't have enough memory card space for it when I rented the original and I didn't like the voices.

Bag It sounds fun, since I love Tetris. Speaking of which, don't feel too bad about not understanding the game mechanics. When I played Tetris as a little kid, I thought you were supposed to stack the blocks to the top as quick as possible and was bored by how easy it was. I thought that was the goal for a good while, too, yet in my adult life I've gotten well past level 50 on a few occassions on http://freetetris.org.

I reviewed Poker Night and its sequel.  Sam & Max are my favorites.

Bag It looks pretty creative!

it's interesting that there are more and more books coming out about gaming culture.  I've got enough of a backlog on books though so I can't really check them out right now.

Game Boys seems like an interesting read though as you mention, I'm sure a lot of the content felt dated pretty quickly after it was published.

indeed it did, as all the major gaming outlets dropped CS 1.6 for Source, and then went on to focus mostly on console gaming in as far as FPS goes.

Nice to see someone bought the Humble Bundle. I got it too mainly for R-Type and Carcassonne but I think that Pack it game is going to be the one game that gets a lot of play.

I need to redownload that poker game. It sat on my PS3 for a couple of months and then I just erased it because I wasn't going to play it anytime soon.

Good to know about the card game. I've been meaning to get that game for the PS3 and I didn't know it had freezing issues. It's bad enough I've forgotten how to play cards to begin with.
