Broken's thinking cap: Jrpgs, why I love em and hate em!

Posted on 07/15/2013 at 07:35 PM | Filed Under Blogs

I think an "adult" JRPG would be boring. I mean real "adult" stuff, not just more violent and darker versions of boys' adventure fantasy.  Real adults have to contend with such things as employment, taxes, marriages, relationships, law, crime, property, finances, family duties, etc. --not demons and mecha and dreamlands or anything fun and colorful. So no, I don't think they should make more adult games. They should just do what they're already doing, but add more blood, violence, serial killers, grimdark, anti-heroes, 'serius bzness,' Hollywood tropes, etc. That's gotta work for the super mature adult gamerz of today, right?

How Dark Souls Changed Me

I've seen the opposite, with most people saying that Demon's Souls is far harder.  I personally thought Dark was a cakewalk in comparison.

New IPs I am Excited About (what about you?)

Dragon's Crown - Vanillaware art style and I love the Capcom DnD brawlers.

Destiny - Nice, colorful art style, cool design work. I only play a few FPS every generation, and this is the number 1 contender for next gen that I've seen so far, unless Battlefield 4 is too awesome to miss.

Project Eternity - Obsidian RPG inspired by Icewind Dale? Yes please.

Super Time Force - Manic, Gunstar Heroes inspired pixel shooter where you can rewind time. And it's from Capybara, who have made some of the best indie games in the last few years.

Killer is Dead - Killer 7 is one of the few games I consider to be art in itself.  This looks to be cut from similar cloth, with some No More Heroes mixed in.

The Evil Within - The one I'm most skeptical of, although Mikami is one of the greats working today.  Hope it's not just RE4 with a different skin, and the enemies are dangerous.

Tell me you didn't just say that: an open letter to Anita Sarkeesian

She's just another member of the media cartel, who preach the virtues of 'narrative' and "experience(s)" over the vices of mechanics and challenge.  I choose to believe these people either can't hang with skill-based games, or they think games aping film will lend the hobby some kind of cultural importance and mainstream acceptance. Which is odd, because you have games like New Super Mario and Call of Duty selling 20-30 million copies, which seems to indicate games were already mainstream.

Ben dips his feet into Dragon's Dogma!

At this point I feel confident in saying that Ultima 7 still has the best open world in an RPG ever crafted, or at least the most carefully crafted, the most ambitious. Tons of secrets, no real fetch quests, interesting (non combat) encounters, every NPC has unique dialog, NPCs perform jobs, story is strong, most interactive stuff, colorful, the least boring. Next would be Fallout New Vegas, and Dragon's Dogma. Dragon's Dogmas world doesn't have the depth of the other two, but it's just a joy to travel through and behold.  They really nailed the art style and graphics.  There are tons of cool monsters to fight, the locations feel believable, you have to travel instead of teleporting everywhere, dungeons are appropriately atmospheric, nights are the best I can remember in a RPG; it seems like a very old school CRPG  thing to do, having actually dark nights where a lantern is necessary.  I enjoy RPGs as simulation type games, so stuff like that is always a nice touch.

Mirror's Edge was Too Hard?

I used to see girls all the time in the arcades back in the 80s, playing games that make today's games seem as difficult as Candyland.  It's content, not difficulty, in my opinion.

Mirror's Edge was Too Hard?

Was going to type something along these lines. If a game with unlimited continues and generous checkpoints is still "too difficult," maybe the game, genre or hobby isn't for you. And the game isn't real hard. But it seems any game thats asks more from the player than a base level of competence or passivity is pegged as difficult. How far we've fallen...

Sex, Violence, and Growing Pains

I don't agree with banning games with sexual content.

However, sex in entertainment is rarely ever interesting to watch, while combat is almost always interesting.  Most sex scenes in films strike me as pointless. Too much information, and rarely relevent to the plot or themes. It's about as interesting to watch and relevant as other, private physical processes like the character taking a shit or shaving.  I no more need to see which positions they prefer than I do how they apply shaving cream or whether they wipe front to back or back to front. It's banality.

Ultima 7, System Shock 2 remakes, reboot Legend of Zelda that is more in line with the first two games.
