Street Fighter: The AWOL Files

There are World Warriors that have yet to step into that ring!

Dan’s Dad

First Appearance: N/A

Last Seen: Dan’s nightmares

Okay, I’m stretching the boundaries of what constitutes a Street Fighter character that’s missing in action, as Dan’s father has never actually been in a Street Fighter game. His story ties in to Dan’s creation, and goes aaaall the way back a piece of promotional art of Sagat for Street Fighter II Championship Edition. The art piece was kind of a joke intended to poke fun at the SNK game Art of Fighting. That game had a character by the name of Ryo Sakazaki that bore more than a passing resemblance to Street Fighter’s own Ken Masters. To get back at SNK in a tongue in cheek kind of way, character artist Akiman drew a piece of art which depicted Sagat holding the dead body of a man that looked like a combination of Ryo and Robert Garcia, who was the other main character in Art of Fighting. This would later be the inspiration for the fully fleshed out joke character, Dan.

Dan’s backstory was that Sagat had killed his father and Dan was out for revenge. This would mean that the body Sagat holds in that piece of art is Dan’s father. In the Street Fighter Alpha series, Sagat has a special pre-match animation that happens once in a while where he can be seen holding that body before throwing it away. According to the exchange between Dan and Sagat in Street Fighter Alpha, Dan’s father is the one who took out Sagat’s eye.

Like Wolfman, Dan’s dad is a blank canvas with which to work fighting game magic. Who is he? What does he look like? We know he wears a gi similar to Dan, but we’ve never seen his face. Does he have a fighting style similar to Dan? Perhaps Dan only had a couple lessons from his dad before he died, which would explain why Dan sucks so much. Dan’s father would be an interesting addition to the Street Fighter series, ignoring the fact that he’s dead, but technically so was Gouken and he’s doing just fine in Street Fighter IV.

Dan's Dad is my favorite. He would be great as an unlockable or DLC character.

I Like Guy's Sensei. The only thing more badass than Guy would be the one who trained him.

Has Capcom fleshed out the story on Dan's dad? I can imagine Dan's dad being just as campy as his son. He stands up to Sagat, Sagat doesn't take him seriously, Dan's dad throws a lucky hit, taking out his eye...

I'd also like to see a bizarre creature like Blanka in the mix. He could use a rival...

For some reason, I generally use Sakura. I also enjoyed the fellow in Street Fighter EX 3 who could "pop" hadouken like things a long distance away out of no where.

Really digging Retsu and Gunloc. I would love to see them in a Street Fighter game. Kempo has not appeared in Street Fighter and although there's other wrestlers already, maybe Gunloc can be all sports entertainment like in his move set.

@Jesse and Mongoose: If they put Dan's dad in there, I'd like to see him be a total badass, and stoic like a samurai. He would be totally disappointed in his son, and he'd be the typical overly dramatic Japanese father figure that you see in so much fiction. Having an Akuma-style Instant Hell Murder attack would be a must.

@Jason Sakura is a great character in SF IV. I almost put Karin from Alpha 3 on this list, as I have a special place in my heart for her, but Alpha 3 is a little too "recent" compared to these other characters.

@Esteban: Yeah, I've always wanted an over-the-top, WWE type of wrestler in Street Fighter. Zangief using wrestling moves, but I've always seen him as more of a real wrestler than a pro wrestler. They tried to do something flashy with Rainbow Mika, but I just hate that character.

I barely consider Mika a wrestler. She just threw her butt at everyone.
