Qix Review Rewind

The original Geometry Wars

My earliest memory of Qix began sometime in the mid-90s when I saw it listed in a Funcoland price sheet (remember those?) and thought it was pronounced “quicks”. As a kid, I thought it was a rule that all words spelled with a “Q” had to be pronounced with the qu inflection. But years of expanded vocabulary eventually proved me wrong. In short, the game’s title is pronounced “kicks”- because I suppose the developer Taito wanted you to get your kicks playing Qix. See what they did there?

Quantum Conundrum Review

No need to wait on Portal 3 to get your first-person puzzle-solving fix.

When Portal hit the market, it took gamers by storm. Never before had the world experienced such a game – the unique portal mechanic was tied to a first person perspective, complex puzzles, and a compelling story and antagonist. Quantum Conundrum, the latest work of Valve alum, Kim Swift, captures at least part of Portal’s essence, but comes up short in the character and story department. First person puzzle solving takes the center stage and the Inter-dimensional Shift Device (IDS) proves to be an interesting tool/concept to drive the complex dimension-shifting puzzles; however, the lack of an overarching concept and vision disallows Quantum Conundrum from reaching the cult stature of its influencing material. Despite this, the interesting mechanics and the well constructed “test chambers” make for a fantastic game that shouldn’t be missed.

Quarrel Review

An addictive word/turn-based strategy game that everyone can enjoy. Now go buy it so we can play!

It is a total shame when not enough people are playing a game like Quarrel, a unique mashup of Scrabble and the strategy genre. I have some small hope that word of mouth and internet buzz will make more and more people shell out the five smackers to try it out, and I need your help.  If you just give the game a chance, you’ll find that it’s enjoyable from the outset and becomes addictive as you dig in for some intense wars with words.

Quake Arena Arcade Review

It's basically a port of a more than decade old game, with worse controls. Sounds enticing, no?

I’ll be the first to tell you how awesome Quake III Arena was back in the day, and still is even today. Fast-paced, twitch shooting, simple-but-effective weaponry, and small close encounter maps made for some of the best multiplayer shooting ever. However, Quake Arena Arcade, which is extremely similar to said game and a port of the ad-driven browser game Quake Live, is a waste. This is not because it's a bad game, but because the essence of the Quake III Arena experience isn't perfectly captured without the use of a mouse and keyboard.

Qix++ Review

The groundwork is laid for an excellent modern day upgrade, but the content is a bit too thin to make it anything special.

Qix (pronounced 'kicks') is a classic title that first made its appearance many years ago in arcades across the world. The addicting gameplay eventually allowed the title to make its way to a variety of other systems, while encouraging a number of sequels and imitators. Given the title's past popularity, Square Enix and Taito have decided to update the title for Xbox Live Arcade.
