Donkey Kong Country Returns Review

Waggle controls nearly ruin what could've been an outstanding game.

After a fourteen year hiatus, the Donkey Kong Country series has returned thanks to a combined Retro Studios and Nintendo effort. This return to the beloved series is, for the most part, a good one; however, the game's controls are extremely problematic, particularly, finicky analog stick controls in 2D and unreliable motion control that performs many of the game’s core functions. Combine this with a distinct lack of heart, and Donkey Kong Country Returns doesn’t quite match up to its SNES predecessors.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions Review

“Greetings, true believers!” Stan Lee’s words as he introduces Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.

The DS version of the latest Spider-Man entry is one I found to be a bit of a delightful surprise. I’d describe the title as a Metroid Fusion-inspired Brawler. In the game, three versions of Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man, Noir Spider-Man, and 2099 Spider-Man navigate a modest-sized maze of a map, uncovering power-ups and secrets along the way as they bang up hundreds of baddies.

I Spy Spooky Mansion Review

A fun hidden object title for all ages.

I Spy Spooky Mansion is a surprisingly well done game based around finding hidden objects. Unlike most other titles in the genre, which are usually flat 2D images, I Spy Spooky Mansion is completely 3D; a great aspect that allows players to scour every plane of an area. Add to that some decent humor, mini-games that actually work, a decently long quest, and co-operative play, and you have one of the best games in the genre on Wii.

Power Gig: Rise of the SixString Review

Why include a real guitar if you aren't going to get to play it like one?

As a guitarist, I find Power Gig: Rise of the Six String almost offensive. It had built my hopes up to hear that a true guitar would be included in a modern rhythm game. In my head, I imagined getting the opportunity to truly strum out some tracks, and learn to play some new songs in a manner I've never had the opportunity of doing. But no, rather than using the guitar like an actual guitar, players are stuck doing the same old Green, Red, Yellow, Blue, Orange button-based notes, with an occasional real power chord thrown in. Even worse, by now everyone is used to playing on a standard plastic guitar controller, making this feel like some unnatural compromise between playing that and playing the real thing.

Super Meat Boy Review

One of the most finely crafted games of this generation.

Since the birth of the downloadable platform this generation, we have seen many great games; however, very few have managed to surpass being a cheap, quick thrill and achieve true greatness. A couple of years back I had the opportunity to review World of Goo, and I walked away utterly stunned by the experience. Today, I'm here to say that such an experience is once again available to the gaming world in Super Meat Boy. The simple platformer is so amazing in its execution, that it's absolutely irresistible.

The Undergarden Review

Some call it Zen, I call it boring.

I find reviewing The Undergarden to be a difficult prospect; it’s another game added to the growing catalogue of independently published games focusing more on the presentation and visual design of the world rather than story or character development. While the other games in this genre, Braid or Limbo for example, try to throw in some complex puzzle interaction The Undergarden instead goes a different route, marketing itself as a “Zen Game”.

Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage Review

It's as if the Warriors series met God Hand.

Fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage is obviously a game adaptation of the popular manga and anime from the 80s, but it's also the latest work of Omega Force, the team behind the Warriors series. After a few minutes with the game it's quite obvious that said team was behind the title, as the gameplay closely resembles the style of play found in their main series, requiring players to take on hordes of enemies at a time. I also couldn't help but draw another comparison as I played through the title; whether it be the setting, feel of the game, or the epic boss fights that conclude each level, Fist of the North Star undoubtedly reminded me of God Hand.

Hydro Thunder Hurricane: Tempest Pack Review

With three new tracks and a slew of new challenges and boats, the Tempest Pack offers great value.

Augmenting the recent release of arcade flashback, Hydro Thunder Hurricane is the Tempest Pack DLC. The pack includes a set of three new levels, two totally new boats, five retooled expert versions of pro and novice level boats, as well as new Championship, Gauntlet and Ring Master challenges. While all of this content is offered in the pack, the tracks are truly the main attraction, and at only 400 Microsoft Points they're a good investment.

James Bond 007: Blood Stone Review

Bizarre Creations nearly hit the mark in this original Bond tale.

Bizarre Creations, creative minds behind the Project Gotham series, Blur, and The Club, have put together their talents to create the latest video game based on James Bond. A combination of third person shooting and intense car chase sequences, James Bond 007: Blood Stone is a wholly original story involving the international spy from MI6. The game is undoubtedly in the upper-echelon of Bond experiences, but its quality is all over the board, ranging from spectacular to yawn-inducing.

Clash of the Titans Review

Brawl of the Boring

I am trying to remember if I have ever played a movie tie-in game that was actually entertaining, and I don’t think I can. Clash of the Titans by Namco Bandai Games is another contender attempting to change this trend and, like the rest, finds itself lacking. It didn’t take much effort to assume that, due to the similarities in setting, the game would attempt to be a God of War clone, and that is exactly what we have, except inferior to its progenitor.
