Monday Night Combat Review

Class-based combat and tower defense join hands in Uber Entertainment's first major release.

One of the titles in this year's Summer of Arcade promition for 2010 is an interesting little arena combat game, Monday Night Combat. The game is what I would describe as a third person crossover of Team Fortress 2 and a tower defense game. Though not apparent at first, Monday Night Combat is a deep experience, and given the material from which it draws inspiration, this is not unexpected. While the title is only comprised of two unique modes, players will find the most enjoyment in the Crossfire mode of the game, where they are teamed up with and facing off against a group of human players.

Eagle Eye Converter Review

Headshots with the accuracy of a laser mouse.

Back when I first went to college, I found myself getting heavily into the PC gaming scene. In preparation, I built myself a ridiculous Alienware gaming laptop, complete with all of the best hardware available at the time. About halfway through my first year, Direct X 9 became standardized and before I knew it, my once cutting edge gaming rig was horribly incapable and outdated. Since then, I've laid off the PC gaming scene and moved almost exclusively to console games. In the transition I've greatly missed the amazing precision of the keyboard and mouse set-up provided by PCs, particularly in first person shooters.

Dive: The Medes Island Secret Review

2D Endless Ocean this game is not.

At first glance, players will immediately draw parallels between Dive: The Medes Island Secret and Nintendo's Endless Ocean series. While exploration and treasure recovery play a big part in both titles, the methods of doing so in both are drastically different as is the core gameplay and camera perspective. Unfortunately, Dive: The Medes Island Secret doesn't quite match up to the experiences found in the Endless Ocean series either.

Persona 3 Portable Review

The third edition of Persona 3 features great tweaks and solid improvements to nearly every facet of the gameplay.

Persona 3 was a game that became one of my favorite titles of all time completely by accident. Thanks to a great sale by Gamestop, I acquired the game free of charge and had no intention of playing more than ten minutes just to see what it had to offer. To my surprise, I was hooked nearly immediately, and soon wondered how ten minutes of inspecting the game turned into an uncontrollable urge to learn more about the characters, the strange world, fantastic combat, and the social link system that added a whole new dimension to the game.

Ivy the Kiwi? Review

Yuji Naka and Prope deliver solid gameplay with an incredibly charming presentation.

Prope, founded by Sonic creator, Yuji Naka, is quickly becoming know for their low budget, simplistic games on the Wii. They originally came to market with the quirky Let's Tap, and its equally weird brother, Let's Catch. Since then, Naka had a son and was subsequently inspired to produce a game that would appeal to the toddler. The result of that effort is the undeniably cute, Ivy the Kiwi?.

Gunblade NY & L.A. Machineguns: Arcade Hits Pack Review

The good old days, when machineguns were mounted on a swivel to the arcade cabinet and ammo wasn't even a concern.

Light gun games have a come a long way since they were introduced many years ago. One of the first I can remember playing as a kid was Gunblade NY from Sega. The cabinet featured two mounted machineguns and the gameplay encouraged constant gripping of the trigger. There were no alternative goals to the gameplay, it was simply point and shoot at anything that moved. As the years have gone by, players have experienced far deeper missions, a variety of guns, and some more complicated cabinets to do simple pointing and shooting. With the latest release from Sega, players have the ability to step back in time and enjoy two classics of the genre, Gunblade NY and L.A. Machineguns.

DarkStar One: Broken Alliance Review

A great space combat simulator for the console market with enough hours of enjoyable gameplay to make up for any odd quirks.

There has been a pretty severe drought in the console world for the space combat simulator game, something Gaming Minds Studios remedies nicely with Dark Star One: Broken Alliance. This enjoyable and easily accessible game provides hours of quirky fun, allowing players to fly through an insanely large galaxy, shooting pirates, escorting ships, and making mercantile trades. The story lacks depth and the later hours tend to drag, but the precise controls and satisfaction as you become a force in the cosmos far outweighs that.

Metroid: Other M Review

With Team Ninja at the reins, players are in for a Metroid experience unlike any other.

Metroid is a wonderful example of how the passage of time and advances in technology have taken a beloved classic and slowly shaped it into an ever evolving gaming experience. The latest entry in the series, Metroid: Other M, is a title that shatters the mold of any Metroid game to date, creating an experience that might spark some controversy among the series' long-standing fans.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light Review

Grab a friend because co-operative top-down shooting and embedded puzzles are the solid cornerstone of Lara Croft's latest adventure.

The Tomb Raider series has been around for quite a while at this point and Lara Croft has found herself in a variety of different adventures, all from the third person perspective. This time around, Lara is not featured in a titular Tomb Raider game, but rather a new co-op experience with a top-down view. While I wasn't sure what to think of the game before playing it, after just a short time, it was obvious that the team at Crystal Dynamics were on to something.

Catalyst Slim Cover for Nintendo DSi XL Review

No, CM4’s DSi XL case will not run Crysis.

CM4 has created a snazzy case for DSi XL owners craving a little change in their gaming style. The Catalyst Slim Cover for the Nintendo DSi XL is a sturdy, aesthetically charged fabric wrapped aluminum case. While the case is a little expensive for what CM4 is offering, we believe it's a very viable option for those interested in upgrading the look and feel of their DSis.
