So This Is August, And Another Game Off Mount Backlog

Happy Monday Pixlbit Nation. So we are starting August and the summer is almost over. Of course here in my little piece of Southern California that means crazy triple digit heat and I’m at the point where I want to start knocking out more games off Mount Backlog. Since I haven’t given a games played update in a couple of weeks its time to catch up and see how July went.

I started three games in July and finished one game. I’m thinking of removing a couple of games off my list of games started this year because they are either games I don’t want to play anymore, or tablet games where there really is no ending. One game on my July list that just missed the cut is The Crew.

I finished The Crew after two weekends of just having marathon sessions on Saturday. One weekend I spent playing through most of the East Coast, and this past weekend I knocked out the final two big sections of the game leading up to the big epic battle (it really wasn’t that epic if you complete a lot of the challenges leading up to it because you have a real kick ass car.) Surprisingly I really enjoyed this game despite the negative things I read about the graphics of the game and how some online folks acted. The game reminded me of Midnight Club where you would go to certain sections to trigger missions, the missions were similar, and the fun of just driving around this huge area.

The controls were fine, and was setup like a typical racing game, and what was a nice twist was that it went from fun Arcade racing game, to more of a refined (I use this term loosely) once you hit a certain point wanting to hit the apex of a corner, following racing lines, etc. The story wasn’t too deep and you’d see the same plot points in any racer flick. Gameplay was fun and I liked the little challenges that are on the freeways/streets while you drive to your destination. Racing through gates, slalom, jumps, finding landmarks, and the various speed tests made the long drives between destinations fun and unlocked some cool stuff for you vehicle.

The Crew is a fun game with a lot to and I’m thinking about reinstalling it on my PS4 to continue playing though all the little challenges. The game is nowhere near the $60 price tag, but at $20 it is a must try for fans of Midnight Club, and arcade racers.

Other Games I Played:

NCAA Football 14 – PS3: I jumped back into my Old Dominion University Dynasty last week, finished off the season at 13-0, beat Navy in the National Title game and expanded the American Athletic Conference to 14 teams and bumped them up into the Bowl Championship Series. I kicked out Tulane, and Temple, and added the Military Academies, SDSU, Boise St., and I think Florida Atlantic (they’re ranked 4th in the nation in the game.) This gives the AAC conference 4 ranked teams.

X-Men Destiny – PS3: I spotted this in my pile of games while searching for NCAA Football and decided to give it a spin. The graphics really look budget but I like the concept of the game of playing with a character that isn’t in the X-Men Universe but rather a person who didn’t know they have powers and have them make choices along the way on which side they associate with. I’m still in the beginnings of the game so I can’t give a love/hate review for the game, but so far I am liking it.

Battlefield 3 – 360: I’m not enjoying this game. I miss the whole run around take out bad guys, rinse repeat. The story is funky, but the one thing I am amazed by is the first mission involving the female pilot in the F-18. The whole prefight checkoff, takeoff off the carrier, and bombing targets is really cool. Everything else is meh.

Driver San Francisco – 360: I think I’m really close to finishing this game. I unlocked another section of the city, and if I actually put in some playing time I can probably knock this game off of Mount Backlog.

Marvel Future Fight – iPad: I did more checking in than playing this game over the past week. Instead of playing everyday I would check-in to get the freebies and the new item they posted

Only problem is the past couple of days I couldn’t get the check-in for Yellowjacket to work. It might be a glitch.

Simpsons Tapped Out – iPad: The creators opened up a new section called Springfield Heights where you unlock items by having the folks of Springfield work in five main buildings to acquire enough resources to build up condos, parking structures, businesses, and two types of mansions. For you folks who like to grind this update is for you!

Fighting Games – iPad:

In WWE Immortals I unlocked

Mad Scientist Bray Wyatt from the weekly tournament, and the new two-week tournament is for a new John Cena character

As much as I make fun of the guy, last week dude broke his nose and instead of ending the match, he continued on and every so often asked the ref for time. The guy is a performer, much respect.

Anyways for the online stuff the developers unlocked these DX items

Free Flow – iPad: I finished the last update 14x14 Mania to get a complete achievement list

I’m bummed that I finished the series because it was such a fun game to play while sitting on the couch or in waiting rooms.

Two New Tablet Games!

The first game is a return of an old favorite

The only thing I don’t like is the freemium treatment with the 5 lives before you wait until they recharge. If only they went back to their $1.99 price tag I would have paid for a game I know I wouldn’t finish…like the previous Angry Birds games.

The map is little more detailed than previous games, and this was scene in the terrible Angry Birds Transformers game.

Instead of having a predetermined group of birds, the birds are now on cards and you unlock them by filling up a damage meter. The more damage you create the closer you get to unlock a new bird.

The game is your typical Angry Bird fun, but I won’t finish the game. I have a better chance of going back to the older games and finishing those games.

The last new tablet game I played is this game

The game is super simple. Tap the right side to punch when one opponent comes at you, and tap the left side to kick when multiple opponents come at you

There isn’t any point to the game other than to beat the endless supply of bad guys. It’s a fun time waster, and the best part is the game gives you an option to watch an add if you want to continue from where you left off or to start over.

Thanks to looking back through Instagram I found out it has been a year since I bought my Wii. I have to say I haven’t played much of the Wii with the exception of turning into an emulator machine, and my short lived run with having my games on a hard drive (the stupid app stopped working.) Despite the funky controller there have been some fun games I’ve played and I wish more games utilized the classic controller because I would have finished a lot more Wii games by this point. Anyways I don’t regret buying the Wii and here’s to more fun with the little white box that sits next to the TV.

Alright Pixlpeeps I am off to get the week started. I finished my donut and I think its time to get moving. Have a good week!

That’s all for now, more later!

-Chris

I just started playing The Crew recently and thought the game was pretty good, considering it's free. I thought the controls felt a little loose, and I think the Batmobile controls a lot smoother in Arkham Knight considering its more of an action game. I do like the Fast and Furious storyline in The Crew though. Do the controls get better with upgrades? That's what I was wondering. I didn't know you could finish the game. I though it was free to play until you bought the full game?

I want to replay Destiny for PS3. I doubt the visuals still hold up.

I thought The Crew had a demo, but not a free release. If it was a full-on free game I should get it back on my hard drive. Unless it's like the PS+ version of DriveClub? I haven't checked the free games for this month yet.

I was  seeing some friends beg EA to bring back the NCAA games on my Facebook timeline. Never could get into college football myself, because there's too many teams and the rankings are subjective. I mean I root for SFA and some other college teams like the Huskers or Longhorns and maybe watch the championship, but I can't follow a whole season like I can for NFL.

I saw a post about Simpsons double entendres today and the one that made me laugh the hardest was Marge in a yoga position on all four, butt in the air asking "What's this position called?" and the guy saying "The American Taxpayer."

Ah, I remember Generation DX. Suck it, indeed. And yeah, for as much shit as he gets, he sure does seem to be a great guy. I still would be more interested in watching CM Punk, but I respect the hell out of Cena. Plus, I'm team Fruity Pebbles all the way (didn't even know that was a thing until I saw Cena on a box I bought). I mean I grew up watching Stone Cold and The Rock, but Cocoa Pebbles are bullshit.

My mom plays a lot of Free Flow on her iPad. I should borrow that from her sometime, plus for her free library books she can get on there with her passcode.

I haven't played Angry Birds in a loooooong time. It's funny how stuff I think has died down will still be around years later. I remember when Pokemon X&Y came out being like "holy shit, they made how many after I graduated middle school?!"

I saw a very similar game to fingers of fury on PS4 on sale the other day. It was a rythm-action game where you pressed the right button to the beat to beat up the bad guys. I almost bought it since it was under $5 and I've been itching for some true rythm-action gaming.

As for the Wii, I might get one eventually, but I honestly think I'd buy a 360 as far as last gen consoles because I love the controller. Then again, I have 360 games on Steam, though they don't run as well, so who knows? Mostly I'd want a Wii for the Virtual Console.

I haven't checked out the PS+ release of The Crew, I've been playing a physical copy of the game

I loved the NCAA Football series especially the later games because I was able to import custom logos, and the online community in creating a full named roster was fantastic. One of the best parts of the last games was being able to move teams into different conferences, have any team/conference be able to be in the BCS, and other fun stuff. The only thing that used to get a little annoying was always checking on recruits before games. Making sure they took their visit with your program, and allocating points to them.

The Simpsons were so sneaky good with their dialogue that things that went over my head in early seasons I can go back and watch and just laugh my ass off.

The Attitude Era of WWF and WCW was so much fun. I check some of the Raw's/Nitro's on WWE Network and its crazy to see what both sides came up with in terms of gimmicks and storylines. The PC Police today wouldn't let 90% of that stuff slide. I bought my younger brother the Stone Cold Middle Finger that they sold at the arena. That alone would be banned today.

Free Flow is a fun game especially once you get into the bigger boards. The folks who made Angry Birds are making crazy money off that franchise. I believe there is an Angry Birds Lego line being released later on this year. I might buy a set or two.

I saw that game you're talking about and thought about buying it. Instead I bought the digital version of Tetris Something, whatever the "new" version is called. Awhile back I did buy a game similar to this one but it was setup like a fighter and all you do is jump and kick.

The Wii isn't bad, but the damn Wiimote sucks as a convential controller. The 360 controller is such a good controller but the battery life sucks. Honestly I get more use out of my 360 than my Wii, but since games are so cheap for both now I've been trying to build up a decent Wii library.

I looked it up and there's no PS+ version like there is for Driveclub, it's just that the demo is two hours long. No wonder, because I was seriously thinking they gave me the game on accident after downloading that demo. lol

I wonder what a video game where you play as a literal (virtual) PC Police force would look like.

Oh yeah, I saw Angry Birds merch everywhere just a couple years ago. It's all Minions now. I guess I'm just such a hipster some of this stuff remains popular while I remain oblivious. lol

Tetris Ultimate? I think that's the name of the one in Summer sale. I didn't buy it, but I watched the trailer for it with the office space being turned into a Tetris game. I have freetetris.org, so I feel like I don't need a PS4 game. That said, I might buy Legend of Korra for PS4 since it's only $6 even though I bought it new on Steam a while back. White Night also grabbed my attention as far as Summer Sale stuff this week.

I don't have the 360 battery problem since it's just a USB cord without wireless. I found out only recently my PS4 controller was wireless. I'm glad my brother told me, because I was about to go out and buy a new one! I thought the charging cord was just a cord, since I skipped over the last gen and figured my friends had all just had to buy wireless controllers for their 360s. Embarassed

I could see this PC Police game where you'd roam around and hand out tickets to people who violate the PC code and ban close to everything....so the exact opposite of how people act while playing Grand Theft Auto

Yeah that's the Tetris game. I spent too much on that game but glad I didn't drop the $30 for the physical retail copy. I'll probably buy that later one once it drops to around $10. Legend of Korra sounds familiar. I wonder if it was a PS+ game awhile back. I should check on what I have in my virtual library.

Yeah I talk to my younger cousins when it comes to what is in. They went from Angry Birds to Minions/Minecraft. If Minions and Minecraft teamed up they would OWN the toy world.

I don't even go wireless with the 360 controller. Good thing the cord is like a mile long. I never used the little cord the PS4 came with. I bought these Sony Branded cables during Toys R Us' sale where they are almost as long as that 360 cord

I'm thinking PC Police would be a wacky Tim Schafer game.

I don't think LoK (based on Avatar cartoon) was PS+, but it's definitely download-only for 360, PS3, PC and I guess the current gen consoles now.

The upgrades make the car more responsive especially when you hitting the higher tier parts. I haven't tried the PS+ version of the game, I've been playing a physical copy so I don't know if Sony released a full version.

I haven't touched my copy of Destiny on the PS3 for almost a year. I think Target had the regular PS4 version for $20 and there might be a deal with their Cartwheel App if you want to upgrade.

Xmen Destiny sounds so freaking good on paper.

The concept is good, the execution not so much.

Oh cool. I can't wait for Angry Birds 2 to come to console.

Looking at the tablet version with the stupid freemium cap of five lives, the consoles might be a better version for the game. Its a shame the developers didn't just charge $2 for the game, I would have bought it.
