The Goodies I Bought During Record Store Day

Well Happy Earth Day Pixlbit! To celebrate I think I should play games exclusively housed in plastic carts (I probably won’t because that means I have to do some connecting of consoles, digging for the games, and blowing on the carts so they work). I will however write about something that I finally got to take part in: Record Store Day.

*Spoiler: This blog is going to be about how I spent Record Store Day, and talking about the new music I added to my library. If you were expecting gaming stuff, sorry, and if you’re not interested, no hard feelings, and I’ll see you next week.

Actually I’ve only known about it for a couple of years, but each year it’s come around I’ve either been broke (boo!) or out of town…and probably broke. This year I set aside some cash for this day and well I woke up late. Yeah that sucks.

I was supposed to go once the local spot opened up around 10, but staying up until 4am put an end to that in a hurry (thanks funny pictures on Reddit). Around 11am I woke up, realized what time it was and was out the door around 11:05. Thank you baseball caps, and basketball shorts! I knew there would be some competition for some of the things I wanted because there was a-lot of folks in town for some little music festival.

I got to the local spot, and there was quite a few people there already, many holding records, and I thought I missed my chance to pick up a couple of cool things to add to the library. I wasn’t there to resell, I just wanted to take part in RSD, and maybe buy a couple of albums. I normally don’t by recent music on vinyl because I’d rather have it on CD because it’s easier to rip, but this was a special occasion. I looked through a couple of boxes of singles (some singles came back on audio cassette. I miss those things) When the main milk crates of special albums were open, I went over and took a look, hoping that the albums I wanted were still there…and if my local spot received them. From what I saw on Instagram, and Twitter I think the stores get random selections because of the different print runs of some of the albums. Well I did find a couple of the albums I wanted

This album reminds me of high school, because of Insane In The Brain. I never owned the tape or CD, but now I have it on vinyl…I just took a look at the sticker and hot damn it’s been 20 years since I took High School Spanish. The coolest thing about this album is the print number

The second album is from a band I’ve really liked but never bought more than one album. I figured it was time to start taking in more of the Roots, and this was on my list. The print number isn’t as cool but I still like the album

At first I was a little shocked about the price of these albums mainly because I’m used to buying CDs, and the records I own I bought at thrift stores, but it’s a once a year event, I thought it was worth it. I’m probably going to put these albums in frames, and just buy the CD versions (*waits for people to throw stones at me). I’m definitely going to next years Record Store Day, and probably pick up more stuff.

While I was there I decided to hit the $2.00 wall, home of the buy 10 get five free before I called it a day. A lot of the albums I bought are old, and many are for one or two songs per album.

LeAnn Rimes is hit or miss with me. Some songs I really like, while others sound like filler. I have a couple of CD Singles from Sittin’ On Top Of The World, and I wanted to give the whole album a listen. As for the other one, I never heard anything from it, and might as well give it a shot

I don’t really follow De La Soul so this album is new to me. I gave it a listen, and I like some songs on it, while the others are slowly growing on me. Boyz II Men’s Coolyhighharmony is replacing a copied tape I had in 8th grade. My friend bought the original and let me copy it if I bought my own blank.

Weird Al is another tape I owned, but that one I actually bought at a K-Mart way back when. I remember listening to the Polka version of Cradle of Love on a school bus going on a field trip. Deana Carter is an artist I kinda like. Like LeAnn Rimes her songs have been hit or miss with me, and from the couple of songs I heard on this album, they aren’t bad.

It seems I’ve building a decent Eric Clapton collection, and I had the Tears In Heaven/Layla tape single around the same time I had the Weird Al album. I really liked that version of Layla, but the original is awesome especially because of this

Blues Traveler I know of because of the album Four, but Adam Carolla talked about their other stuff, and I saw this album. Why not give a try for $2 bucks?

I haven’t heard anything yet from this Brian Setzer album, and how do you not buy Rick Astley? I swear my music library is getting heavy with late 80s early 90s stuff, mainly from the songs I heard on the radio.

More late 80s early 90s stuff. Alannah Myles because of one song, and Billy Joel because of what I like to call “The History Lesson Song” aka We Didn’t Start The Fire. So far the CDs I picked up on this trip down memory lane, just noticed this.

Two CDs I liked while in college but only had digital versions. Santana had a string of really good songs in this album. Keali’I Reichel was an awesome surprise I found in the bargain wall. I’m slowly building up my Hawaiian music (I have no idea what they’re saying but it reminds me of spending time with the family on the islands).

This is the final album. I was surprised the Greatest Hits album I bought a week before didn’t have Hip To Be Square, so I bought Fore. Turns out there are a couple of songs on there I really like along with the ones found on the Greatest Hits album.

Here are a couple of albums I bought later on that day

I have a Neil Diamond (I like to call him Neil F’n Diamond) Greatest Hits on CD but its Live Recordings, and I wanted the studio versions of the songs especially since every ballpark was singing Sweet Caroline. I know 99% of you did the “bum bum bum” part after I wrote Sweet Caroline, just like me. Pink Floyd was on sale, and a girl I used to talk to always talked about how great this album is, so might as well give it a listen.

The final pickup of Record Store Day is a Google Play card. Originally I wanted to use it to buy the premium versions of some apps, but I might use it on some music.

Well there you have it, that’s how I spent one Saturday. Most of the day was spent on my other hobby, and appreciate you folks on a video game site reading about another one of my hobbies. Back to gaming next week

That’s all for now, more later!

-Chris

Thanks to record store day, my local record store was stocked with all of the albums that I have wanted to add to my collection.  Since, i did not want to spend a lot of money, I avoided record store day.

No lie, Record Store Day isn't cheap. Lots of awesome stuff, but the prices are crazy

Weird Al and Cypress hill are cornerstones I grew up with as well. I've been a freak and a geek forever!

Haha nice. I forgot about Weird Al until last summer when I found his Greatest Hits CDs at Walmart...and then his stuff started showing up everywhere. Good stuff.

I heard that Neil Diamond showed up at Fenway Park yesterday and sang Sweet Caroline along with the Boston fans. Pretty cool of him. Always liked that guy. I like your music picks, especially Leann Rimes,Eric Clapton, and Alannah Myles. I will miss the incredible art you got on album covers, sleeves and foldouts of double albums. CD's tried to match it but failed. Now with everything going digital we are losing out on something very special from our favorite artists.

Yeah I was watching the Angels/Tigers game, and the broadcast cut away to Boston when Neil showed up. It was pretty cool. I like the convience of digital, but having the physical stuff just adds to the experience. Digital booklets are ok, but there's nothing like flipping through the actual booklet while listening to an album.

Cover art for vinyl is really awesome because of it's size, and the gatefold covers.

Dammit, I didn't even know about Record Store Day! "Insane in the Brain" was on the radio a lot when I was litle, too. Eric Clapton is awesome, as is Al, and I need to start listening to Carolla's podcast again.

I like Adam Carolla's podcast, lots of laughs, and he has some really interesting guests. If you haven't heard him in a while he brings on David Wild from Rolling Stone and they talk about music, they each pick a song and describe why they like it, and play a little bit of it. Because of their choices I've picked up a few singles.

Record Store Day is pretty cool. The stores in bigger markets usually have artists show up to sign stuff which is cool, and probably have a bigger selection of albums

It's funny that the vinyl market is in a resurgence right now even as CDs are dying off. The guys who relieved me of half my 40 year record collection wouldn't even look at my 800 CDs. Apparently there's no market for them but used vinyl flies out the door.

In retrospect I should have sold the vinyl myself.

Yeah it's crazy that vinyl keeps chugging along. I got into it because of the novelity and that I always run into some cool/interesting albums at thrift stores. Now it seems that everyone is hitting thrifts just to resell. Nature of the beast I suppose.

I do love CDs because of how easy it is to pop it into a computer and after a couple of minutes it's imported into my iTunes. For me vinyl is something I'll listen to while just hanging out at the house, or enjoying a lazy Sunday.

I thought I was the only one with a Rick Astley CD. Great finds in 80's music.

Nope now there are two of us Rick Astley CD owners here on Pixlbit! Thanks! Just when I think I'm getting close to buying the majority of songs I grew up with, I seem to run into another CD with songs I forgot. Thank goodness for thrifts/ local mom&pop record stores

Huey Lewis.  I had an LP he put out with a band before He became famous,  The name of the band was Clover and it had some decent songs on it. I wish I still had it.

That would have been a really cool album to still have in your library. I wish you still had it too.
