Disappointed With Angry Birds Transformers

Happy Monday Pixlbitland! It is a cool 67° right here in my little piece of Southern California. So how was you weekend? Did you all get your fill of football and gaming? The Aztecs and Cowboys earned the W’s this weekend so I am a happy camper.

Dallas Cowboys fans saw glimpses of what SDSU fans got to see a lot of, and hopefully he gets more playing time. I think he’s a better TE than Hanna, opened up a lot of holes for DeMarco, and catches everything.

Ok so going back to gaming related stuff I woke up early Saturday Morning and was watching either CNN or MSNBC and what was the big topic? Gamergate. Since reading about it here, it started showing up everywhere now.

So what has Chris been playing? I wanted to take down some games from Mount Backlog but after getting caught up in a Below Deck 2 Marathon

I didn’t really have much time to play some console games (I do love me some bad reality shows, and this one along with Vanderpump Rules are easily my favorites on Bravo). There was some gaming but it was some quick shots here and there which not only killed some time, but I got some enjoyment

On Thursday I spent a couple of hours in a waiting room and I brought my Nexus 7 with me. I was going to do some reading but it quickly turned into playing some Shoot’em Ups

I made my way through three or four levels, which was fun, but hot damn after a certain point the screen was filled with bullets, lasers, and other fighters and I got stuck.

I switched over to this collection of games and played a couple of different versions ultimately sticking with the original because that’s the one I remember playing the most growing up. Both games are a lot of fun especially when you use a stylus to control your ship.

Later on that day when I was charging the iPad Air I figured why not give NBA 2K14 a shot. Heck I spent $1.99 and the new game was released, I might as well check it out.

The last time I tried to play this game was when I was on an airplane over the Pacific Ocean…and I fell asleep. This time I tried the Quick Game option where it was the Heat vs the Spurs. Either I missed the select side or they didn’t offer one, but I was playing with the Heat (not 1, not 2, not 3…Miami Heat). After playing a half of this game I decided to give Franchise Mode a try and went with the LA Clippers.

I played through a game and the Clippers dominated the Lakers. I’m not a fan of on screen controls but these weren’t bad. Aside from the usual missing the directional “nub” every once in a while, the game was fluid. There isn’t much to controls other than a button for shoot, pass, and jump. We shall see how long before I stop playing this game because I get caught up in something else. I’d like to finish one season just to get my money’s worth out of it.

Another game I spent a lot of time with this past week is the one I was waiting for, and that is Angry Birds Transformers on the iPad Air

First impressions are the game is fine in short bursts but there really isn’t much substance to the game, and a couple of characters are annoying. The concept of the game is simple, the Angry Birds, and the Pigs have teamed up to stop the evil Pigs, Robots, and eggs. Rovio took a side scrolling shooter approach to this game, which seems to work but the charm of the Angry Birds franchise just isn’t in this game. The objective in this game is to take out a bunch of enemies, rescue frozen Transformers, and unlock parts of the island.

The game is repetitive and you play the same levels multiple times to collect pigs to unlock new Transformers. You can also upgrade your Transformers, and refill their health by using the in game currency. This currency can be earned in missions by destroying buildings and items as well as collecting coins from missions already defeated.

Yes you can transform into vehicles…except Soundwave turns into a car and not a boom box

The one major annoyance for me is that most of the levels require you to team up with another Transformers, and it always encourages you to sign into Facebook and use your friend’s Transformers

I refused to connect to Facebook because I hate getting notifications from games like Candy Crush (seriously why in the hell are people playing this all the freaking time?).

At the end of the level you have the choice to either have your Transformers celebrate with each other or individually

This is cute the first time, but after that it gets annoying. I was expecting more from Angry Birds Transformers especially after seeing previous Angry Birds games, but this one is a definitely a let down for me. If you want a trip down memory lane with the look and sounds of the 80s cartoon, but after all of that I would pass on this game.

I unlocked one of my favorite items from The Simpsons Tapped Out

Yup the Donut Torture Device

And finally I updated the 3DS Firmware this past weekend (C’mon Android, OSX Yosemite and the 3DS got updates) and I saw that you can install themes to the main screen!

I had a couple of dollars in credit still so I browsed through Nintendo’s offerings and there isn’t a lot but this one seems like the most fitting of my Luigi themed 3DS XL. The themes are a little steep at $2 but there is some music in the background, which is nice. I want the option of adding my own custom background theme. It’s probably available but I didn’t look hard enough.

Ooh I almost forgot to mention I thought about picking up a Playstation TV over the weekend, but once again I couldn’t justify it. Add this to the Skylanders, and recent Disney Infinity game as gaming items I wanted originally but once they became available I lost interest. To you folks who bought them, I’ll live through your experiences for a bit until I get the itch to add it to my collection.

Anyways Pixlbit it is time for me to end this little chat we are having because I have stuff to do.

That’s all for now, more later!

-Chris

*Hot Damn, you good folks were busy writing up a bunch of blogs for me to read. I’m behind but I’ll do some reading this week!

I have to admit, I not having a phone or a tablet and having no interest in sprts games, I frequently skim over that stuff in your blogs, but sounds like for the most part you were having fun. Other than Angry Birds Transformers not impressing you.

You thinbk you have a lot of blogs to catch up on? I've still got unread blogs dating from last April up to the present!

Its all good, I know a lot of folks don't like the games that I like and its fine. Just as long as I am enjoying my game, and others enjoy theirs, that's all that matters. I am disappointed with the Angry Birds Transformers game, maybe I was expecting too much.

You have a ton of blogs to catch up on! A minor spoiler is that there have been a lot of good ones between now and April...and a bunch of random ones from that guy who always writes about Reality Shows in some Quick Hits blogs Tongue Out

That's the cool thing about the multitude of different games and platforms available - something for everyone. I'm of the opinion that just because I don't like something doesn't mean it's bad. It's just not my thing. And I'm sure if I had the platforms to play some of these games on, they would interest me a lot more than they do at the moment.

I was curious about Angry Birds Transformers, but not enough to download it.

If you want to play a really GOOD Transformers game, get Transformers: Fall of Cybertron.

I'll give that game a try. I've had some bad luck with the Transformers games I've played (the PS2, PS3, and DS games), hopefully this one will change my luck.

After playing a bit of the first Angry Birds "game" and realizing that there wasn't really much there I never touched another one.

I thought the idea of themes on the 3DS was interesting but I'm not going to spend money on them. Maybe if they offered them for points on Club Nintendo but I'm not really getting many points so far this year.

The Angry Birds games are fun in short bursts...like waiting in line. This could be why I never finished one.

I'd like to see special themes offered in Club Nintendo. Heck I'd like to see Nintendo give their users a special freebie for hitting Platinum. Make it happen Nintendo!

Your 3DS XL is Luigi themed? Can I see pictures?

Did you see this weekend's Treehouse of Horror after the post-game show? I liked the Bart going to hell school segment, but while I knew all the references in the next two segments, I thought they relied too much on referential humor.

I don't really get the love for Angry Birds or Candy Crush and I'd never spend money on either, but hell, I liked AB well enough when I had it and I'd probably like CC fine as well. I think there's a way to tell Facebook you want no more CC notifications. Pretty sure I did that or all my friends stopped giving me notifications.

I'll start caring about basketball video games when Nowitzki gets on the cover of one like he should have been after their win in 2011.

Those shoot-em-ups may be fun, but I always get lost amidst the hectic overfilled screens. Sounds like you had a similar experience.

Crap. Gamergate coming to mainstream cable news channels means I'll have to write an editorial on it.

I heard the announcers mention Escobar being from SDSU at one of the games. Made me think of you. I was happy with the Cowboys and Packers this weekend, which seems to be a theme for my weekends and I love it. Currently rooting for the Texans to beat the Steelers and so far it's looking like I'll get my wish.

This is my 3DS XL. It is the bundle with Mario and Luigi Dream Team.

I did see the Treehouse of Horror. This is usually the fun episode and the Tapped Out game said there was going to be a "special" unlockable if you watch the episode and answer the question in the game. Nothing showed up in the game, but I did enjoy the episode. I never saw or read A Clockwork Orange but I did enjoy the segment. Hellschool was good, especially when it started to snow when Lisa became cool.

I have family who are hooked on Candy Crush. I tried it for a bit, and then after the jailbreak on my old iPad I played through the entire game at the time in under a week, and lost interest.

I might have to get the latest NBA 2K because the intro is all Kawhi and the Aztec fans are excited because in the beginning the audio says "From San Diego State...". I think this will be the third or forth sports game that has some connection to SDSU (not counting games with John Madden on the cover, the others are two Marshall Faulk Madden games, and I think it was NCAA Gamebreaker 98 that features the Drumline as the main menu music).

Oh Gamergate...I'm still trying to avoid it. Those shooters are insane. I think I spent the majority of the game looking at my ship and trying to navigate through all the lazers, bombs, and other junk. Props to the folks who are really good at these games.

So when Gavin lined up before the second TD, I said "He's going to be open, how is Romo going to screw this up" and Romo proved me wrong and hit him with a laser. I do need to get an Escobar jersey. Man I was channel surfing and saw the last couple of minutes before halftime of the Texans vs Steelers and the Texans forgot how to play football. That last two minutes was rough

Yeah, Romo looks a lot better with an O-line in front of him, leading many to question whether it was ever really Romo's fault at all. I haven't really paid much attention to football until this season, so I dunno. I just like blaming him for other Dallas teams losing when he's at their games.

And yeah, it was looking like the Texans were just going to dominate the Steelers for an easy win, then the momentum flipped hard in Steelers' favor.

Its a combination of things: 1. Romo grew up watching Favre and tried to be like him. He's a gunslinger who made some bad choices. He's finally matured to where he doesn't need to force passes 2. The Offensive Line is finally good (THANK GOODNESS) 3. Coaching at times had no idea what they were doing. I felt they didn't run enough, and when Romo was forced to pass he'd get hit a lot. 4. The hype of being the Dallas Cowboys Quarterback is a lot of pressure. As much as fans around the league don't want to say it, it is the premier job in the NFL. Early on he lived it up...and then went "Romo" during big moments in games.

My friend and I still refer to big interceptions or fumbles in games as "going Romo". This also applies to any blunder in any sport.

I feel bad for the guy for how much everyone hates on him, including things I've said as a joke. I'm hoping he can get a Superbowl win. I'm also hoping it's this season, but if not I still hope he gets it.

Yeah he doesn't deserve the majority of critisim he receives, but that goes along with the job of being the Dallas Cowboys Quarterback. I do hope he does win the Superbowl, while wearing the stars on his helmet.

I still want to play Angry Birds Star Wars but not at the prices it's still going for.

I don't get why that game was so expensive when it was released on console. Looking back I think I paid a bit too much for it at $10, considering the tablet version is a buck and I can use those Angry Birds figures I found on clearance to import them into the game.

KnightDriver

It was $40 when it first hit Xbox 360 last year. I was so ready to buy it, but that price just scared me away.

Yeah that $40 price tag was insane when I saw it on the shelf.

man, I sure could use a donut torture device!

I'm curious about NBA 2K14... but not curious enough I think.

That episode where Homer ate all the donuts is easily one of my favorite Treehouse of Horrors. Such an awesome episode!

I have both the console and tablet versions of 2K14, and I'd say wait a bit until the console version drops. Unless you're a rabid basketball fan who needs the latest and greatest, the older ones are just as good, and hopefully dropped in price.
