Episode 114: Tropes vs NWP in Video Games

Posted on 05/31/2017 at 02:12 PM | Filed Under Feature

Stage Select:

3. Ezio Auditore vs Cesare Borgia, final scene, Assassin's Creed 2

Ezio: "May your name be blotted out. Requiescat in Pace."

Cesare: "You cannot kill me! No man can murder me!"

Ezio: "Then I will leave you in the hands of fate."   (Ezio then proceeds to drop Cesare to his death rather than kill him with a blade)

2. "When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons! What am I supposed to do with these?! Demand to see life's manager! Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons! Do you know who I am?! I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!" - Cave Johnson, CEO Aperture Science Innovations (Portal 2)       **Please sign me up for one of those lemons

1. Final Scene with Kefka, Final Fantasy VI

Kefka: "And did you all find your "somethings" in this broken world that just won't die?"

(everyone proceeds to tell Kefka that life is great, including the line "I kupo my friends" from Mog. If they could have animated in an eyeroll in for Kekfa back then, they would have.)

Kefka: "You make me sick...it's like listening to the world's worst self-help booklet!"

Crono Crossing 1993: The Legend of Zelda, Link's Awakening for GameBoy

I. Love. This. Game. However...can we all please still be concerned for Link? He's lost in the middle of the ocean having a heat-stroke, dehydration induced dream about a giant whale. It never gets resolved. He's still drifting. Someone please give the man a raft so he can find his way home.

Stage Select:

3.That moment in RPGs when you suddenly lose everything/can only use one skill/things are backwards. While it may be annoying at first, it really changes up gameplay in something you're putting 50+ into. For example, the dungeon area of FF9 where the original or weakest weapons suddenly did the most damage.

2. CG Cutscenes: I feel like these are my reward for putting time into something and I appreciate these little mini movies whenever they appear.

1. The specific to Zelda "Link does not talk" expectation. Even in BotW, I was glad he didn't speak. I'm fine with his little grunting noises and his random arm gestures when he's speaking to NPC's, because what if they gave him a voice and it was TERRIBLE? Let's face it, most of the voices in BotW were bad. Just let Link be, he's made it this far.

Crono Crossing 1994: Final Fantasy VI, Super Metroid just behind it. Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 was also great for GameBoy.

Stage Select - Top 3 Town/Village Themes

3. Windwaker/Breath of the Wild - Dragon Roost Island/Rito Village theme. I agree with Casey on this choice, as this is one of my favorite Zelda tracks to date. I am so happy they remixed it to use in Breath of the Wild. Sometimes I go to Rito Village just to hear the song.

2. Final Fantasy V - Home, Sweet Home from Lix. This song is really relaxing and pretty in the game, playing in Bartz's hometown of Lix. My favorite version is on the Final Fantasy V Dear Friends album, where the song is given lyrics.

1. Final Fantasy VI - Kids Run Through the City - plays in multiple towns in the first half of the game. This song is a great MIDI, but it is a stunning piano piece. If you've never heard the solo piano version, do yourself a favor and YouTube it. One of the best songs in the game from my favorite Final Fantasy soundtrack.

Chrono Crossing - 1997

Is it finally the year I get to say it!? It is! It really really is! My favorite game of 1997 is...

Diddy Kong Racing!

No, seriously. It's Final Fantasy VII! This was the first Final Fantasy game I had ever played, and it hooked me on the series for life. I met my husband through our shared love of the ShinRa corporation, and the Turks were the first cosplay we had ever done together. Fun story you do not have to read on air, but feel free: Years ago we attended a tiny convention in Chattanooga, TN called JAMPcon. We had a cosplay group consisting of Rufus, Reno, Rude, Hojo and Reeve. The con was small and held at a hotel, so needless to say, most of the guests had no idea what was going on. In costume, we decided to have a drink at the hotel bar. We must have looked very important because a man came up to us wondering what company we worked for and where we were from. Our Rufus proceeded to tell him all about our amazing energy company, ShinRa Electric Power Company. The man was enthralled. I feel confident he looked up our stock symbol, SHI.

Episode 108: California Dreamin'

1998 holds really special memories for me. Most of my video gaming at this time was done along with my little brother, who is 8 years my junior. I was in high school and he was in grade school, so having something like games to bond over really kept our relationship solid. I picked these games because they were our favorites, despite any critical opinions:

5. Mario Party - The first game in a series that we really loved. We had never played anything like MP before, and being able to play together was a great selling point to our mother. The series had its ups and downs, but we still play to this day.

4. The Legend of the Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon: We would pretty much play anything that came out for N64, so this game was no exception. The script was funny, the music was enjoyable, the characters were quirky and the plot revolved around saving Japan from being westernized. And of course, you had to fight in a giant robots, which was my Power Rangers-obsessed brother's favorite part.

3. Brave Fencer Musashi: In truth, we bought this game originally because it came with the FFVIII demo disk. Turned out to be worth it, because this game was fun. I especially enjoyed how everything was named after food in some way. The voice acting was terrible, but the game play was challenging.

2. Banjo-Kazooie: This would have been my number one if there wasn't an obvious number one. I've played this game over and over, along with it's sequels. Our favorite part beyond the actual game play was the character "voices", which consisted of random sounds mashed together in a way that really hit every one of my mother's nerves.

1. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time: No explanation needed!

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Review

Great review, Casey. I cannot stop playing this game...mostly because I only have time to play in small increments. There is just SO MUCH to do, and I absolutely love that! Hats off to Nintendo for making this game what it is; it deserves all the positive praise it has recieved. I think my favorite part is the fact that he can wear so many different outfits for different effects. That was always explored in Zelda, but never to this extent. And it gave me a laugh when I flew to that island trial and I was suddenly in an episode of Naked and Afraid.

Also, I love the amiibo stuff! I've gotten Epona and the special saddle/bridle. I need to get the Windwaker clothing.

LOL...yeah. I know the feeling of barely being able to be tolerated in co-op.

I wish I was better at these games, because they look so fun. But I'm completely awful.
