Peter Molyneux on Peter Molyneux

Perhaps you've already read the interview Peter Molyneux had with Eurogamer.

Perhaps not.

If you ever listened to that ol' podcast I did, PB & Jason, hosted here at PixlBit, you'll know I have pretty strong feelings about Molyneux at this point. I've never played his games, outside of an experience with Populous before I could really read well or comprehend the genre. If I had to guess, I was likely 6 years old at the time.

However, I did catch a good number of his interviews, mostly beginning with the lead up to the launch of Fable. I'm not going to rehash those interviews, but at that point in time, the reoccuring trope was pretty simple: Promise and describe something grand about your game that didn't actually exist and in many cases, wasn't even planned. At various points, Molyneux even admitted and/or bragged about lying to gaming journalists. A secondary trope Molyneux tended to follow was to say his upcoming new game was better than his old game. That Molyneux fixed most of the game's problems, and that the new game will do everything the old game was supposed to do, and more! Rarely, if ever, was this the case, but it didn't stop the pattern from playing out again and again.

And so, after promising he wouldn't do any more interviews, Peter Molyneux worked with Eurogamer to produce a new interview. Granted, it's been a great deal of time since his last interview, longer than I expected, it's another in a line of broken promises.

This time, the interview coincides with a tertiary (or perhaps secondary?) Godus release of Godus Wars. No, Molyneux and 22cans have not released a final or 1.0 release of Godus. The most recent update was in April of 2015, as best as I can tell, not anywhere near the final release.

Instead, they provided the game free to all early adopters of Godus, even though before the launch of this game, there was no indication or communication that Godus Wars was even in development. In fact, the last time anyone heard anything about the development of Godus was in September of 2015. Again, I restate that there was no indication of a second game being in development in any form.

Back to the present and my point, in this interview that was promised never to happen, Molyneux basically insists that he is a new Peter Molyneux, better than the old Peter Molyneux. That he's fixed most of his problems, and this new Peter Molyneux will do everything the old Peter Molyneux was supposed to do, and more! Wait, doesn't this pattern seem familiar?

He's really worn out his welcome at this point. His new games aren't even news these days. I only found out about Godus a few days ago.
