AFK: Memorial Day, Gamertag to face and NESing

not quite AFK but AFK enough

I had to take a break from all the news about the next generation of gaming consoles, so a holiday seemed in order for that purpose. Little did I realize that Memorial Day was just around the corner, giving me the perfect opportunity to get back to basics and relax during my three day weekend.  Though I don’t have immediate family currently serving, we’ve had our fair share of family members and friends who served in the armed forces. From my late grandfather who served during WWII to a family friend who’s still in the marine corps we made sure to pay our respects to them as well as thanking them for their service. Even my “Little One” helped decorate grandpa’s grave for the holiday. I still think he would’ve loved the “Little One” given her character and cuteness.

After that I spent most of the weekend oddly playing games on my older systems. For some reason I’ve found myself interested more in my retro systems than my current crop of current generation gaming technology. But I was able to sneak in a game or two of Fallout New Vegas. Even earned a few trophies (if one follows my raptr score) till I had to give the caravan card game a rest, who thought a non-official gambling card game would be a good idea in this game?  I’m only playing it for a certain trophy so once I earn it that’ll be the last I’ll play of that silly card game.

On Memorial Day itself my family had the usual get-together that normally occurs; we ate the usual meal and again sent our standard prayers. It was nice to get away from a gaming controller/keyboard for a while and enjoy chatting with family members. It was so nice I was even lulled into a forced sense of security and invited to watch a movie marathon of sorts. I thought it would be something fitting for the holiday like a John Wayne movie series or even a LOTR marathon session. Little did I realize it was more sinister than that: It was “Twilight”!?!?!?  It was my fault really; I boasted how I was lucky enough to abstain from the twilight series as a whole. (I only got thru the second movie before walking out of the theatre and literally threw the first book out of a third story window. The librarian wasn’t pleased…)

My family had me and I couldn’t escape, not without upsetting anyone that is. It got so bad I started to “live tweet” the movie if only to help dull the pain. Never understood how my family could enjoy such drek that is the Twilight Saga. I did my best to drink my fill if only to help ruin my short term memory, too bad I forgot that you have to drink ALOCHOL to coup with Twilight for I instead was drinking down liter upon liter of coca-cola. In the end I was literally chewing on a couch cushion and felt the urge to shoot something. Not even “riffing” the Twilight Saga in my own personal way didn’t help matters, though I have to admit my “Little One” threw in a good one liner or two.  I’ve taught her well.

Now I know what it means for something to "drive you to drink".

So when my “Little One” happen to point out she brought along her BB gun, I jumped at the chance to go outside and fill something with BB pellets. My mom even had my old Red Ryder BB gun out, if only to scare off unwanted pests, so I took that as a good omen and immediately set forth in making a shooting gallery for us. I have to admit that my “Little One” shot better than I or my mom but I have to admit that we were both handicapped by my old BB gun missing its proper gun sights. Yet even after we were done shooting, I still craved to attack something.

It was then that I realized that my parents had a rather obscure NES game in their library, and a certain someone had just recently blogged about the game on pixlbit. So I thought: Dare I I? I have to admit the NES looked slick on my folk’s HDTV. Last Christmas I hooked their system up via A/V cables instead of the RF adapter but I didn’t get a chance to see how it faired with most of their game collection. So with that thought I gave Kabuki Quantum Fighter a try. I won’t go into vivid detail about my experience with the game and instead I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.

The game is alright….

I might try it again, that is after I try out their copies of Double Dragon, Battletoads and Super Mario Bros. 3. I never thought my parents amassed a decent sized NES collection, I guess I need to go with them to more flea markets in the future.

And thus all things came to full circle with me typing away of my exploits. I thought I’d be longer “AFK” this go around with my last blog. But for some odd reason I keep getting pulled back in. Perhaps it’s because I want to partake in the gametag to face series people are into.

Here is a current shot of my face. As you can see I do have some hair stubble but that’s not normally around. The hat though is 24/7 when I go outside. I’m sure people have noticed my online gamer pics of my actual face but they might seem a bit small for many to see. So enjoy the full face shot while it lasts, or before the department of health and human services orders it’s takedown as a social health risk to one’s sanity!

There must be something wrong with me because I spent the weekend watching old horror movies, specifically the living dead series. The drought in survival horror games has made me nostalgic for 80s B movies for some reason. I'm not really a horror movie fan, but it's interesting to see the influences these movies had on games like Dead Island and Revelations. I'm not exactly sure where Revelations inspiration came from though, Titanic? The sea creatures look like Pirates of the Caribean.

Is that a Rick Grimes hat from Walking Dead?Cool

Not sure if there is any prerequsiet in what your allowed to watch or not watch on Memorial day. I found it odd myself that I'd be playing Fallout New Vegas when that game feels more like a middle summer game than unofficall beginning of summer offering. But it sounds to me your stuck in Fall season gaming/movie watching to me ;)

A rick grimes hat? Please, I've been sporting this hat even before there was a Rick Grimes Cool

I hear the second part to the fourth Twilight gets funny. But I only ever saw the first one when my mom rented it. I just thought it was boring.

I really can't see what people find funny about the Twilight series. I've heard pepole say the second movie was the funniest comedy of that year. But whenever I watch it I just see all the stupid actions being done that just grades on me. I kept arguing over every scene that happend when by most rights it made no sense why it happened only to be told by my folks to shut it!

I couldn't get into Caravan. I did manage to get the platinum in New Vegas, but that was probably the last trophy I got. I'm glad you got to try out Kabuki Quantum Fighter. I take it from your reaction you didn't really like it that much? I still can't believe your parents have a NES collection. Do they actually play those games?  Battletoads is evil lol. Just evil. Yell

I don't understand it either. all three caravans have to between 21-27? an addtion of the two? between those numbers? There was one time when I had all three caravans at 26 each and I still didn't win! Looking forward to getting that trophy out of the way.

I forgot to link your blog in mentioning my thoughts on Kabuki Quantum Fighter but I ran out of time given the blog was written so late. I just hope people reailze you reviewed it not long ago. I was just annoyed by the lower floor enemies that get me when my hair attack didn't strike low enough to get them.

Some of those games are actually games I use to own but left them at my folks house since I don' thave a NES anymore. I have both legend of zeldas, the original TMNT and of course the super mario/duck hunt combo though the duck hunt won't work on an HD TV. the rest were games that my folks bought dirt cheep when they happen upon a garage/thrift sale in their travels. that's how they got super mario bros, 3, battletoads and double dragon. Perhaps I should do a picture blog of my folks NES collection. They even have te snazzy NES storage unit. thanks for the idea!

Please tell me you wear that hat all the time! it's got a walking dead vibe to it, particularly with the rifle, but not sure how much zombie slaying would happen with BB's!

Yes I do! To the point where MysticalMist (teh wife) gets embarassed whenever we go out into the public! I've never been told it holds a Walking dead Vibe but I have recieved jokes about who's the new sheriff in town. You'd be suprised how much damaged I could do back in the day with a simple BB gun, I think the town police still have my home address memorized...

Nice photos....and hat! Very stylish one. Does kinda have the Rick Grimes look to it. Like the one with you shooting the BB gun. I had one just like that. As for Twilight,it really bugs me. Mainly because vampires don't sparkle when sunlight hits them. In good vampire movies they burn to a crisp or simply explode! I guess I'm not a romantic fellow when bloodsuckers are around.

Glad you like the phots. I'm not too sure about them myself. Some of them make me look fat! Stretched out perhaps but then again I did feed on 4 good sized steaks after those photos where taken.

I'm more of a purist vampire person myself. They don't sparkle, they don't come out in the daylight, they don't feed on animal blood and they don't have venom in their teeth! If it wasn't for this bastarization of vampires this movie wouldn't have recieved the coverage it got. it would just be a bad romance movie quickly forgotten in the mists of time.

Those are some pretty cool pics. I specially liked the third one of you playing Kabuki Quantum Fighter.

I have to admit I do let my passions flow whenever I do play a game. I'm just glad I don't get too passionate to the point of rage quitting, damaged controllers on the other hand...
