Community Question: PlayBits

We call a livestreamed game with a live chat and potential Skype-in for listeners a PlayBit here at PixlBit. They're something we've done on and off again. Before, sadly, PlayBits never gained too much traction or attention, but now that the PixlBit community has really started growing, it's something we've been talking about behind the scenes. PlayBits have mostly been done by two people, JD and me.

There are a few ideas about the direction we can take things. PlayBits can focus on community-selected games. An example would be if a group decided they all wanted to go back and revisit, say, Tales of Symphonia on the GameCube, it would be possible to center a series of PlayBits around that.

Another idea is to focus on new titles. Something closer to what happened with the Wii U's launch. Just some of those big games out there.

Any other suggestions? Would there be any interest from everyone in reviving the idea?

One thing I think would be neat would to revisit a predecessor to a game that's had a recent or upcoming sequel. Like System Shock 2 for Bioshock Infinite or the old Tomb Raider games for the reboot. Just an idea.

Funny enough we were considering playing System Shock 2 ahead of Bioshock Infinite on our Backloggers podcast. This would allow you guys to play along and listen to staff comments at weekly checkpoints until we beat the game.

We'll keep everyone posted on the effort and if we're going to officially move forward with it. I know I'd love to play it, but finding the time right now might be tough.

hmmmmm.  I don't know what games I would suggest....  I like Greenman's suggestion of System Shock 2, but then again I kind of want to play that myself (but I don't know if I will).  Tales of Symphonia is cool, because it has a story people can follow, and dialogue and stuff.  But it's a pretty long game!

If I were to do a new(er) game, I would do something like Heavy Rain -- a game that not everyone really wants to play, but that everyone should experience somehow.  Plus it's not too long.  I beat it, but I would be curious to see someone else play it.    I feel the same way about Bioshock.  I'd love to play it myself but I just don't have time. But I'd like to see the story because it seems so cool.  Dark Souls is another candidate.

As far as new new games I would suggest like Revengeance or ZombieU.

I dunno. Tough choices!

JD's been pretty fond of ZombiU. I imagine he might like doing something along those lines.

My suggestion....

I think it would be cool to play obscure games that no one has ever really heard of, but in the same token the obscure games are actually good. Venetica is a great example of this. It's a B-Side title that never gained too much attention, but it was still a cool game! WET is another title that not too many people know about, but was an awesome game!

I'd be interested in watching. I used to do the whole Retronauts thing over at 1up. I'd like to see you guys play some obscure stuff. Maybe some indie games? The Indie scene is exploding with great content!

Indie games are an interesting idea, but it can be tough to find some of the better ones out there. I'd recommend people email me or PixlBit in general to recommend one of those. Given that some Indie titles are spread out over the far end of the universe, it's tough to keep track of them all. My email address is "jason" and of course, I'm at pixlbit.com.

If the idea behind PlayBit is to get the community involved, perhaps playing through a game in which the player can shape the character they are playing and the world around them would be an interesting idea.  Especially if the audience was allowed to suggest or even decide on certain actions throughout the game.  Skyrim, Mass Effect, and even inFamous 1&2 are just a few of the games that would adapt easily to this format.  Apart from allowing the audience to participate in the action it would also be a good way for some players to see how the other half lives.  I know when I play a game that allows for moral choices I have a hard time taking the low road, and I'm sure other people are exactly the opposite.

Apart from this idea I think that any game that allows for MP whether it be competitive or Co-op would be a good choice for a show like this.  Either making the show staff only or allowing the community to join the game in some way (whether it be open to all or some type of prize) would be highly entertaining.

Finally I've had an idea for a while that I haven't acted on, but I'm sure that somebody has.  It's essentially something like a MST3K show but instead of showing bad/cheesy movies the peanut gallery comments on bad/cheesy games.
