JD - Aspiring Creative Director

Let me tell you guys something about myself that I'm not sure I've been too vocal about here: Like some of you on here, I one day wish to work in the Gaming Industry as a Creative Director. That's my dream, one that I've been chasing for a while. I haven't always known the exact path to get there, but over the past few years of refining what I wanted to do in the games industry, I've found what suits me best.

Ever since I was a kid, I've been the type to come up with ideas of things I wanted to see. I know what kinds of games inspire me, and I've been trying to figure out how to act on those in the best way possible. I'm no programmer, and my artistic talents are extremely situational and limited, so the I've chosen the more writing focused, creative side to dive into.

Unfortunately for me, I didn't have the chance to attend a school that will help me achieve this route. The school I go to has a program for Professional Communications - which has done well in helping my writing and journalistic exploits - but everything that I've done in the realm of game design has been self taught so far. I've been reading up on writing scripts, creating characters, forming stories, inventing gameplay systems, even minor story boarding. It's really interesting to me, and while it's a slow process, I've been taking some steps toward my aspirations.

I have stacks and stacks of ideas that I've accumulated over the years and as of recently I've been honing in on a few. The games I've thought of range from Adventure/Platformers, RPG's, and Action games in particular. As a writer, many of my ideas have underlying concepts that I want to address, that have to do with aspects of my personal life in regards to family, relationships and trust. If you guys are interested, I can share some of those ideas with you via blog for critique (which would be very helpful btw).

I do have a few ideas that are at the moment pure gameplay, but those are newer and not as fleshed out.

As of now, while I'm in school still working on my bachelors in Prof. Communications, I've been working with a group of friends to try to get some of my ideas off the ground. The main project I'm working on now, codenamed "Memento" is going slowly but surely. We have me, doing the main writing and planning, a couple of artists and a composer at the moment. Since we don't have any immediate programmers or developers to work with, we are trying to make a mini-series to flesh out the backstory of the world and characters that the game is set in. You can say that its our way of trying to do someting working with the resourses that we have available. Plus we hope that we can use this mini-series as a pitch to programmers and developers to help us make the game part of it.

I know that the game industry is a tough one to break into. I'm not really doing this for fame though, as cliche as that sounds. I just want to create something that I'm passionate about. I feel like I have some good ideas, and I want to share them with people.

Anyway, the main reason I write this is to see what other aspiring game designers might be here at pixlbit, and what kinds of experiences have you guys had while trying to create games?

i want to make games, but only indie style.  I don't want to be really in the industry.  But I need to pay for art and programming, cause I can only program a little...  I'm going to do it when I have some extra cash, make tiny little games.

Yeah to be honest, right now I'm more interested in doing Indie type projects. That said, I do want to take a stab at some big games down the line. However the recent Indie Boom has been encouraging. I wouldnt stiking to that either.
