Tales of Xillia English Footage Impressions

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a HUGE Tales of Series fan. Last years Tales of Graces f on PS3 was pretty good, though it wasn't my favorite by any means. One of the things I wasn't too impressed with was the localization. Some of the voices were fine, but for the most part I felt a disconnect between the characters. A lot of them seemed over acted, and a bit too corny for my liking. Not to mention, it came off as cheap and not well translated. On the contrast, I really enjoyed the localizations for Symphonia, Abyss and Vesperia. I found the characters to be a lot more believable and likable in those.

So today, some footage of Tales of XIllia, which is to be released on PS3 sometime later this year, leaked online. This was the first footage I've seen of the English cast and from the small bit I saw, I feel like it's a step up from Graces f's. Lots of angry fans seem to feel like the female lead, Milla, has too deep a voice based on one line she says. It didn't bother me too much, but overall I came away pretty excited. Now if only Namco Bandai could give us a release date...

Anyway, here's the clip. Let me know if you're looking forward to Tales of Xillia!

I'm pretty excited for it.  Tales of Graces f wasn't bad.  It had its moments.  I liked Vesperia better though.  Haven't played Abyss.... yet.

I totally agree. It was a good game, but Vesperia is gonna be hard to beat in my book. I enjoyed that game a ton. Yuri ftw!

Looks like a good game. I don't think her voice was too deep, I just thought the line read was a little awkward; otherwise, voice acting seemed pretty standard for a ported Japanese game to me. And that giant hand move looked cool.

Can't wait for this game. I love the Tales series.

Nice to finally see some English footage and voice acting, even if 'accidentally' leaked. Judging by the Jap seiyuu, I would've assumed that Milla would be a bit more feminine/less robotic sounding, and Alvin a bit older/more hilariously ironic, but Jude and Leia both seem pretty good... yes, anyways, can't wait.

My favorite Tales game is Legendia.  Of course, that has a lot to do with who composed the music: Go Shiina.  He's my favorite video game music composer.

interesting to see Legendia as your favorite. I had issues with Legendia, mainly becase the art style looked kinda cheap to me, but i hear the plot was solid.

I am all for lead female characters not having annoying faux little girl voices. One reason why I couldn't get into Eternal Sonata was the incredibly grating voice of the female lead. As for Graces, I really liked it.

Yeah don't get me wrong, I definitely enjoyed Graces f a lot. Just not as much as some of the other titles. I do agree though, having a stronger voice is def not a negative...I guess it was just how the line was read that has people up in arms.

I can't wait for Xilia.  Tales has become my favorite franchise.  I agree Graces wasn't the best, but even a less than average Tales game is still fun.  I hope we get Xilia 2 also.

hopefully. I hear Xillia 2 has a lot of improvements over the original. And yeah even if Graces f wasn't as good as Vesperia in my book, it was (and still is) a blast. (Currently working my way through the future arc of the story)

I am excited to get my hands on Xilla. The only Tales game I ever beat was ToS and the main story of Legendia, just not the bonus stuff yet. I need to get a move on Vesperia, Abyss and Graces F. THey are sitting in my game closet...not played for months or years.

All 3 of those are great. Vesperia has a great battle system and cast, Abyss has a great story and Graces F is pretty unique compared to the others. That will be fun to catch up with.

I'm also a big fan of the Tales series. Tales Of Symphonia is my favorite of the bunch. I also finished Symphonia II, Abyss and Legendia. I did play Vesperia but never finished it due to having to sell the 360 to pay for a new PS3 after my old 60 GB model died. I'm going through Tales Of Graces F now; with Ni No Kuni waiting in the wings. I'll certainly be buying Xillia.

The voice work of Graces F is uneven. Hubert simply lays it on too thick with his bitter angst, Pascal is way over-the-top; though she does have a personality and Cheria's voice actress seems to be fighting between sounding 11 and 18. Still, it's not bad but I prefered the voice work in Symphonia and Legendia.

I would like to finish Vesperia someday. I was about 20 hours in. Might just import the Japanese PS3 version.

Yeah, if you can manage, the PS3 version would be prime. I really wish that came out here, they went balls out and added a whole bunch to that one. I woulda dumped at least 100 more hours into it if they released it...but oh well, I can live without it i suppose.
