PixlBit's 2011 Supplemental Awards

Just when you thought awards season was over...

Winner – Dead Island

Dead Island’s reveal trailer brought viewers on an emotional roller coaster as a family is brutally torn apart by zombies amid an idyllic island setting.  It’s an amazing accomplishment that has garnered its own recognition here in these awards, but also set the stage for a mighty bait and switch that would leave a bad taste in many gamers’ mouths.  We expected an emotionally compelling experience as laid out by the trailer and were instead treated to a buggy game that was nigh impossible to have any emotional connection with and offered nothing new.

There are plenty of people out there that enjoyed Dead Island, including some writers here at PixlBit, but the game doesn’t garner the title of Most Disappointing by being a bad game -- that’s debatable -- it wins out this dubious category by promising completely different than what was actually delivered.  This of course proves without a doubt that pre-rendered trailers should be taken with a boulder of salt.

These types of awards are always fun. Surprised Uncharted 3 didn't win best graphics (though I played BF3 on PS3). Would have picked either Rayman or Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet for art direction. I agree with a lot of these picks though.
