PixlBit's 2011 Supplemental Awards

Just when you thought awards season was over...

Winner – Battlefield 3

The online FPS market is a cutthroat arena with plenty of the same ole’ same ole’ getting pumped out year after year.  Battlefield 3 breaks from the ho-hum tradition and creates a tasty blend of stolen ideas and ground breaking new ones.  The biggest breakthrough is the way points are doled out for fulfilling your role on a team.  Pick the Support class and your sprays of suppressing fire will cloud opposing players’ vision, allowing others to pick them off while they are handicapped.  All of that suppression will also garner you points, which means that getting kills isn’t necessary to be successful.  It’s the sort of tweak that encourages everyone to work together and makes the whole experience much more meaningful.

The beloved Battlefield vehicular combat also returns with a variety that would make the toughest jar head swoon.  Taking a spin in tanks, Jeeps, F/A-18s, armored vehicles, choppers and even manning anti-aircraft guns are a blast.  Each one takes some practice, but as skills and perks open up for each vehicle that teamwork hook drives you to assist your compadres with your armored ride -- even if you aren’t getting all of the front-line glory.

It’s a noticeable shift to feel like you are really working on a team when you play an online game with strangers.  Everything in Battlefield 3 has been honed to make working together come naturally and that makes the game feel fresh and fun even when there are plenty of other multiplayer games out there to choose from.

These types of awards are always fun. Surprised Uncharted 3 didn't win best graphics (though I played BF3 on PS3). Would have picked either Rayman or Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet for art direction. I agree with a lot of these picks though.
