My Top 5 Superheroes

So as Captain N pointed out today, it's Superhero day. So I thought I'd join in with my favorite superheroes. So here's my list of my favorite heroes:

5. Captain America

What I love about Captain America (and you'll find this is a running theme here) is how incorruptable he is. It's not just about getting the job done, it's about doing it the right way. The way with no compromises, no regrets, and no casualties. He's not just a superhero, he's a role model, the guy you should strive to be no matter what you do. Hell, his reason for fighting the Nazis was, "I don't like bullies." How can you not love a guy that ernest?

4. Captain Marvel (DC)

Captain Marvel is a ten year old boy named Billy Baxter who yells "Shazam!" and turns into an adult superhero. What more could you possibly want? There's something so magical about seeing a fully grown man untouched by a loss of innocence. He still has that bright eyed optimism and can do attitude you'd only find from a child. I think this Justice League conversation explains him better than anything else.

Batman: You were a little hard on the Boy Scout, don't you think?

Superman: I thought I was the Boy Scout?

Batman: I did too, 'til I met Captain Marvel.

3. The Tick

The Tick is everything fun and pure about superheroes rolled into one hilarious character. He's a moron, but he also will fight for justice at all costs, never giving in to temptation. He doesn't have a secret identity, instead always being in costume. Instead of having some awesome catchphrase, he yells "SPOOOOOON!"  And his speeches usually make no sense ("Life is full of mysteries. Like why do little blue men hit me with fish?"). And god damn every moment with this guy is fun as hell. It's impossible not to read a Tick comic or watch the cartoon without smiling.

Plus the guy beat a black hole in a fight!

2. Rorschach

Overall, I'm more of a fan of the kid friendly versions of superheroes rather than the darker ones geared for adults. That's not to say there aren't good dark ones, just have more fun with the former. However, there's no denying just how badass Rorschach is. His whole "You're trapped in here with me!" line still gives me goosebumps every time I read it. He had one fucked up upbringing and thought process which was an interesting examination of what a superhero would really be like. Plus, the guy was so incorruptable that....well, you probably know how Watchmen ends.

1. Spider-Man

There's so much I love about Spider-Man. I love the quips, I love how he's outmatched against his villains but pulls some plan out of his ass to beat them, I love how relatable he is as Peter Parker or Miles Morales (either one would deserve my number one slot), and I love his stories. I feel so drawn into Spider-Man stories in a way where I'm not with other heroes. With most heroes, I'm waiting for him to get back into the costume, but with Spidey, I'm just as interested when he has the mask off as I am when it's on. Sometimes I even enjoy the Peter/Miles part more than the Spidey one.

And while I'm on this anyways, my favorite Spider-Man stories/arcs are Raimi's Spider-Man 2, Ultimate Comics Venom War (the one with Miles), the Ultimate Clone Saga, Death of Ultimate Spider-Man, "If This Be My Destiny," and all of the Spectacular cartoon.

Another admirable thing about Captain America is that while he's loyal to the U.S.A., he smart enough to question authority, to have doubts about those in charge. He isn't a jingoistic nutbar, either.

That's another aspect about Caps I love. Also his unfamiliarity with the present day can be pretty funny.

Solid list. Good ol' Spidey tops mine as well.

this is a good list.  But beyond the typical Batman/Superman my favorite superhero is Daredevil. I don't know why.  Maybe the Catholic thing.  Undecided

Oh man I used to love watching The Tick cartoons. It was so random but funny. Good list

I really should go back and read through Ultimate Spiderman.  I remember when it first came out and was in awe of the book.  I am not quite sure why I never go past the first trade.

Superman is my favourite Superhero.  I can't really explain what it is about him, but I know he is my favourite.

I don't really get into comic books or super heroes much, so I don't think I can think of five favories.  So you can pick out some for me that you think I'd like.

You'd love Captain Marvel and The Tick. You'd probably also like Squirrel Girl, she has the power to talk to squirrels and somehow uses that to beat the toughest Marvel characters like Wolverine and Dr. Doom, though it's mostly off panel and they never really elaborate how.

One good thing about The Tick being a Saturday morning cartoon is that it paved the way for another underground comic to be a Saturday morning cartoon: Sam & Max.  That is one of the few comic books I did get into.  But I wouldn't call them superheroes. :)

The TICK!!! A hardy YES to that one!

I just heard some talk about Rorschach that made me think twice about him. The movie made him a badass, but in the comic he's kind of a jerk and has some really unattractive political views. Alan Moore, writer of Watchman the comic, has apparently said how none of his "heroes" are supposed to be admired. They're all too flawed. I did like him too after seeing the movie though. I'm just having second thoughts.

Spiderman, like Batman, is attractive to me mostly because of his foes. I love Spiderman's villains.

I definitely wouldn't say I admire him, I just think he's an amazing character

I agree. I liked him too. "You're locked in here with me." Classic!

Also the way he takes all those guys trying to break into his jail cell during the riot. So badass.

Cool list

The Spirit, Spider-man 2099, Batman, Nightwing.

Can't think of a 5th, it's hard as I like more non traditional heroes and comicbook characters these days.

I need to look at a super hero list. Oddly I didn't get into them much growing up so i never thought about which one I liked more over time. sounds like a good brainstorm session to figure out.
