Scariest Night of My Life

Living in South Mississippi I have seen more than my fair share of storms.  I have live through Hurricane Camille,  Hurricane katrina, a direct hit from a Toranado in 1975,  and more near miss tornados than I care to remember. I hate Tornados.

But last night I was scared shiftless. I mean really really scared. I have never expierenced anything like it.

Laying in my new game room ( my daughters old bedroom) I was   browsing the web when suddenly it sounded like someone or a lot of someones was on my roof with sledge hammers.

We were having a Hail Storm, now Im not talking about marble size hail, Im talking about

Tennis Ball size hail

This photo is from my neighbor's Facebook page.

It went on and on and on until I actually thought I would go mad from the deafening noise of those freaking  ice balls pounding my roof and home.

Another friend posted these photos from the same storm, but it hit his neighborhood earlier during daylight

His yard

His House!

His house again

About 70 miles north in jackson Mississippi they were reporting

Softball size hail...from Pearl MS

I got the above photo from the WLBT TV website. Jackson, MS had two injuries from people trapped in their car and the hail burst through their windshield and hit them in the head.

My three cars have little indentions all over the hood and roof, Luckly my house recieved no visiable damage, I know the roof took a beating but i cant see any damage and hopefully it will hold up during the next rain strom.

My son-in-law's car had a windshiled shattered and a broken tail light, plus they lost power and had to come stay with us for awhile last night.

I can not believe the windows in my house were not broken.

Anyway...I never ,ever in my life want to expierence that again...ever!

Sounds like quite a night! Not in a good way either. I've seen some hail before, but nothing that size. I was in Hurricane Katrina and Rita. It was fun during the storm.... Aterwards, not so much. At least your safe and your house is ok.

Remy,  You may know where I live. In McComb about 100 miles north of you. Yeah, the worse part of katrina was the more than a week without electricity in august!

That is unreal! I'd heard of folks experiencing hail that big before. But never seen it. That could kill you if you got caught out in the open with no shelter. I'm certainly glad that you and your house are okay.

Wayde:  I've never seen anything like it and I hope I never do again, yeah, I seriously think it would beat you to death if you were caught out in it.

Weather in America seems mental at times, makes me glad for our frequent yet mild rain here in the UK! Keep safe pal.

phew, that sounds terrible!  That's big hail!  Thank goodness no one was really hurt.

I was in a tornado once, in Minnesota in the summer. The sky turned freaking green.  We lived on a lake, and when it was over, our neighbor's dock was on top of our boat.  Sealed  It wasn't funny at the time.

Glad you survived man.  Take care of yourself.

Wow. Those houses look like the houses I saw in East Germany that still had WWII bullet holes in them.

Andrew:  yeah, they're pretty scared up.....I would like to visit East Germany

I visited East Germany in 1990, the summer after the Berlin Wall fell and East Germany (and East Berlin) were opened up by the Soviets. There was a striking contrast between the two Germanys that in some ways still persists 20 years later.

East Germany was run-down and still bore bullet holes and bombed-out shells from World War II, as well as bullet holes from more recent alteractions (the Execution Wall in East Berlin was particularly grim), and the place was very smoky. The East German Trabant cars used a very low-grade of gasoline that burned into yellow exhaust.

West Germany, by contrast, was very clean and fully rebuilt. Frankly, West Berlin was much cleaner than most American cities. There was no vandalism in the Berlin subways, compared to the extensive vandalism the New York subway system showed at the time - when we got back from Germany, we had to take a KLM flight from Frankfurt to JFK in New York and then took a bus back to Tinker AFB in Midwest City, OK, where we had started our trip.

Glad you're all ok. I complain about the snow, but I'd rather deal with the occasional northeaster and blizzard than tormados and hurricanes. I lived in Minneapolis for about three months and we had too many tornados in that short period of time.

Tami:  Thanks, I guess I was never in any danger, I was worried about my home getting destroyed, and the noise just scared me silly.   I used to love living in the south, but as I get older, Im getting tired of it.

Lee: good that you could repair it yourself and save some money, I can't hammer a nail striaght!   I never realized just how dangerous and scarey a hail storm could be....I hope I never have to go through that again.

A tornado is the onlything worse in my opinion we had some 50 to 60 mph gust about three weeks ago so I have to do my roof again I hate wind its so funny in the winter all it does is blow No rain, snow nothing but wind thennwhen summer comes and its a 110 outside theres no wind at all Texas weather is nuts but I would rather have heat then storms well bad ones anyway.

Holy crap! We never get anything more than pebbles around here, and even that's kind of rare. That would definitely be crazy!

I've survived a couple of tornadoes. Was within a mile of a big one once. Destroyed the town of Morris. But hail freaks me out big time. I was walking down my street when we got grape sized hail once. Ran into one of those buildings that is curved aluminum[like Gomer Pyle's barracks] and it was deafening in there. Only shelter I had so I had to stick it out for 20 minutes.
