Games Beaten

-Wolfenstein: The New Order (PS4)

Wolfenstein is a surprising game in many ways. It bucks the two-weapon trend and let's you carry—and dual-wield!—everything you find (though the laser ends up being overpowered). While killing Nazis isn't unusual, doing so after THEY win WWII certainly is. Stealth wasn't annoying! The story itself was much more involved than I was expecting and the characters were surprisingly well developed. The game kept me engaged in and outside of missions and ended before it overstayed its welcome.

-Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris (PS4)

I was so glad that Guardian of Light got a sequel, though I'm not quite sure this one lives up to that game. The mechanics remained largely the same and playing co-op is a blast (though I didn't get to try the four player mode), but this game wasn't very challenging, at least not to simply complete it. There were a fair number of extra challenges, I suppose, but that's not really what I'm looking for. But still, I had a great time while it lasted. Cool game. I hope they make another one.

Games Bought

I didn't have any fantastic finds like Bloodborne last month but I did pick up some new games, of course. The big one is The Taken King (PS4) expansion for Destiny (which, for backloggery purposes, I'm treating as its own game) and it's really good! Been playing it quite a bit and have really enjoyed it. There is so much new content and an actual story! Craziness Tongue Out

Everything else was either used or on sale or clearance. My wife found two copies (so we can play together) of LEGO Lord of the Rings (3DS) for super cheap on clearance at Target, as well as Castlevania: Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate (3DS) and The Walking Dead: Season Two (Vita) (all on different trips). We found Pokémon Platinum (DS) at a consignment sale and Animal Crossing: City Folk (Wii) at Goodwill. On the same Goodwill trip I bought a copy of Quake 4 (360), not because I'm necessarily very interested in it, but because this version included the bonus disc with Quake 2 on it. I've never seen the bonus disc in the wild so I snapped it up, even though the discs don't look real great. Hey, it was cheap lol. Finally, when it comes to spending money, I grabbed a couple things from the Humble Store end of summer sale: Saturday Morning RPG, which I've heard good things about on mobile, and Lilly Looking Through, based on Snee's reccomendation from way back when (both for Mac).

La-Mulana EX snake boss

Yeah, good luck with that, buddy.

That just leaves the PS+ games for the month. La-Mulana EX (Vita) is the one I'm most excited for. It's a difficult Metroidvania-style platformer that I first heard about on the Wii years ago (I can't remember if it ever actually came out on the Wii...I think it did though). Coming in second is Super Time Force Ultra (PS4/Vita). Sounds like it has some interesting gameplay ideas. There was also Twisted Metal (PS3) (I can't remember if it's one of the good entries in that series or not) and a couple of games I'd never heard of: Grow Home (PS4), Xeodrifter (PS4/Vita), and Teslagrad (PS4/PS3).

Now Playing

-Destiny: The Taken King (PS4)

I've really enjoyed this expansion so far. The new area to explore (the Dreadnought) is definitely the most interesting one in the game so far and there's tons of do on their. And the story is so much better than the original Destiny that it's hard to believe it's still the same team! Really good stuff.

-Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call (3DS)

This game has really sucked me in. I don't care too much for some of the extra systems they've layered on top (leveling up your characters, equipping abilities, etc.) but the music is so good and there is so much of it. I feel like I've hardly scratched the surface.

-Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP)

Still slowly plugging away at this game. I maxed out my fire sword recently. That was a long time coming O_O

-Kirby's Return to Dream Land (Wii)

My wife and I started this up a week or two ago. Not real far but it's fun and easy. My three-year-old gets so excited when he sees Kirby Laughing

As for this month I have several games I'm hoping to play but I doubt I'll get through half of them. I'll start with the first season of the Walking Dead on my Vita and go from there. Gotta play something spooky!

Hooray for Kirby!  I think little kids should start out playing Kirby games, not Mario.

I know this isn't my blog, but you got me curious. Why do you think Kirby should be the introduction to gaming for the littluns?

I just think Kirby games are less frustrating.  Mario games can get pretty hard in places, but Kirby games rarely get that way.  Kirby games were initially designed for younger players anyway.  Also, I think old arcade games are good to start kids off on gaming, too, due to their simplicity. Mario games are great, don't get me wrong, but I just think Kirby games are better.

Is Wolfenstein: The New Order still on sale? Might want to get me a full FPS for this PS4.

Temple of Osiris is fun and a cool freebie. Might get back to it.

Haven't heard much about Taken King. Was wondering how it was doing.

Saturday Morning RPG in any way based on cartoons of old?

I think Blake said he really loves La-Mulana EX. Did it originally release in 2012? Cause if so, probably the game I'm thinking of.

I tried playing Super Time Force and it was fun, but I got stuck on a tutorial thing related to the time travel mechanic. Granted, it was very early in the morning, and I think I should have paid more attention to the text.

Grow Home is fun, it's like a mini version of what I imagine No Man's Sky would be. Xewodrifter is a Metroidvania title and Teslagrad is a platform-puzzler with a really cool steampunk art style. I want to say based on its introduction it's set in Russia? Reminded me of An American Tail's opening.

I guess I should play my $3 copy of Resident Evil Revelations 2 Episode 1. Or was it RE2: Revelations ep. 1? Either way, longass title.

You could find The New Order for really cheap about six months ago but I don't know what's it's going for now. The Taken King is really good, especially if you have friends to play with regularly. I imagine it loses some luster when played alone all the way through.

Saturday Morning RPG is an homage to '80s cartoons as far as I know. I haven't played it yet, though, so that's just what I hear. People like it though.

You have me interested in Xeodrifter now. I might have to check that one out now...

Always fun to see what others are playing and have finished. I'm trying to concentrate on playing what I already own and not buying anything new (or new to me) for a while. We'll see how lon that lasts.

I've tried that "don't buy more games" thing and it's really hard! Tongue Out

I do really well, until I have to go to a department store. I usually go to a family-owned chain called Reny's, and they're a few doors down from this really awesome little independently-owned game store. And then all my resolves gurgles down the drain and I inevitably come home with something that I didn't intend to buy.

I played Dark Void Zero recently. It's a Metroid style game with jetpacks. Really cool. Thing is, I don't like platform games much.

But platformers are, like, the most prominent genre on the NES and SNES! To be honest, though, I usually don't care for 3D platformers outside of Mario.

I know, and I keep trying them and then thinking about why I get so frustrated with them. It's that repetition I'm sure. Maybe I just need to work on my concentration.

I am playing Monter Hunter Freedom Unite on the PSP also. I just started it though.

You really got to go all in with it and it can be a lot of fun. Do you have anyone to play with? Also, good to see you back!

I do not. I am on my own for now.

I recently bought the Destiny: The Taken King Legendary Edition. I haven't got to play much of it. I think I  am going to start to a new character, probably a Titan class.

I usually play with a Hunter, though I started a Titan in the downtime between House of Wolves and The Taken King. But there is so much to do now that I haven't touched my Titan since then. We finally did the Nightfall last night and will hopefully be ready to tackle the new raid by next week.

The farthest I have progressed in Destiny previously was my Hunter to level 12. Had not done any of the raids either. Now that I am back in, hope to change that.
