BaD #4: Black Tiger

Black Tiger, another 1987 Capcom arcade game, is the deepest and most involved game I've played yet on Capcom Classics Collection Remixed. It's a level-based action adventure game set in a fantasy world terrorised by a trio of dragons. You play as a fearsome barbarian an a quest to free the land. You run and jump (a stiff jump but usually manageable) and beat the crap out of enemies with your mace, which you can pay money to upgrade at shops scattered about. You can also buy consumeable armor and a few other items. The levels are fairly large, scrolling both horizontally and vertically.

Black Tiger

Unfortunately, Black Tiger is also the cheapest of the games I've played so far Frown Enemies will literally appear on top of your character from doorways in the background. Bad guys and bosses also have no regard for physical boundaries like floors and walls and will run into you from impossible angles. Sometimes you'll come across cheap enemy placement during the many jumps you'll be making. All that is somewhat mitigated by the lives and continue system. Whenever you die you start again a sort distance back rather than at the start of the level, and all a continue does is reset your score. (Remember, it was an arcade game and Capcom wanted your money.) What killed this game for me, though, is one lousy jump. I was near the end of the game (level 6 or 7, I'm not sure; I had killed two dragons already) and exploring a large danger-filled level when I got to a jump I could not make, but I had to make it to continue. There was no way around. I even watched youtube videos to see if I was missing anything and the other players just...made the jump. I tried it dozens of times but to no avail. I rarely get so mad at a game but Black Tiger is a fetid pile of crap that can go flush itself. It would be a decent game if the levels were just designed in such a way as to make them doable. But alas, the land shall remain the grips of the final dragon...forever.

That sucks there's a jump  you can't get past at the end of all places. I thought this would be about the bad PS4 game. Pleasant surprise it is a blog on a cheap  arcade title.

I've never heard of this PS4 game but it doesn't look real great O_O

I played this on Capcom Arcade Cabinet on 360, and I think it's back compat on XBO now, so I'll play it again. I liked it but you said it, CHEAP! Really cool battle mechanics though. I'll play until that cheap death over and over.

I wouldn't want to be pumping in the quarters to play Black Tiger but there is fun to be had here...until you can't progress past the #@$% jump.

Good thing I don't have to put change into these games anymore. I would probably avoid it if I did.

Between the summer of middle school and high school, I went to a band camp where we stayed in college dorms while the students were out.  In the dorm lobby there were arcade games.  Track & Field, Black Tiger, and some generic shooter.  I learned all the secrets of Track & Field that week, and also played a lot of Black Tiger.  It is cheap, but I enjoyed it anyway.  There is a PC Engine game called Son Son 2 that basically plays like Black Tiger.

That sounds like it was a fun summer! What did you play in band, by the way?
