Games Beaten

-Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved (XBO)

I love the pure action thrill of Geometry Wars. Its simplicity is part of its attraction. This game complicates stuff perhaps a little too much—I hate any 3D level—but it is nice having more to do, like the adventure mode. Some of those challenges were really tough! But at the end of the day it's the classic modes that remain the most fun, and they are the ones I'll be periodically returning to play.

Games Bought

July was another sleeper month on purchases. I finally picked up Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. (3DS) after passing it over so many times. It was $6 new! Then it was just the PS+ games Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration (PS4) and Erica (PS4), which looks like a cool FMV thriller. That's it!

Games Being Played

-Kirby and the Rainbow Curse (WiiU)

At the final boss!

-Astral Chain (Switch)

More than halfway through now.

-Star Fox (SNES)

Star Fox SNES

I started this up out of curiosity (and to finally unlock Star Fox 2 on my SNES Classic) and it held up better than I expected. The frame rate, of course, is very low and some of the enemies are kind of abstract but it was still quite fun and a lot of the things we associate with the series really did start right here in the first game. I was surprised. There are three paths through the game. I played the first one.

-Destiny 2 (PS4)

Just mopping up various quests and stuff.

-God Eater 3 (PS4)

The postgame grind has begun!

Yeah, Star Fox 64 is in many ways just a remake of the first game.

I found myself itching to play Star Fox 64 while playing the first one but, ironically, I don't have a way to do that anymore. Wait, unless it's on the Wii U virtual console...

Star Fox might not hold up too well today, but I remember being astonished by it back in the day. I never had a SNES, but I would go over to my friend's to play his.

I've always wanted to play a Kirby game, but I never buy them. I'd like to buy the one for Switch... but I'm hoping for a discount that will never come.

I played the first Geometry wars on the 360 I think. Fun game.

You've never played a Kirby game? Ever?? Really??!? You're a bit out of the target age group by now but you would still enjoy it, I'm sure. Do you have the Switch online service? If you do then there are a number of games you could play right now, like Kirby's Adventure on the NES, the game that gave Kirby his pink color and copy ability. On the SNES there is Kirby Super Star (a great collection of smaller original games) and Kirby's Dream Land 3 (very pretty late era SNES game). Also, Kirby's Dream Course! Fun but brutal putt putt. The one Kirby game I regret not getting is Planet Robobot for the 3DS. Maybe someday.

Star Fox 64 was the first of those games I played. It was one of my favorite N64 games. The SNES games just seem too slow by comparison, but it was cool that they were pushing the SNES. Sega did it better with Virtua Racing on the Genesis with its own built in SVP chip.

Astral Chain is great. I just wish they'd say something about Bayonetta 3.

Same. I used to play through the hardest path in Star Fox 64 all the time. It took just an hour to do! If only they would make a new Star Fox game with just the Arwing and no gimmicks.

I was excited for Code Name STEAM but found it kind of difficult.

Strategy games aren't my most preferred genre, but I enjoy them sometimes and this one is so different.

I love those strategy games with grids and such. I just watched a Sakura Wars series overview and they mentioned the battle system in Code Name STEAM was taking right out of one of the Sakura Wars games, I think SW3 on the Saturn. Apparently some of the developers worked on both.

Ooh, I do so want to get that new Sakura Wars game.

Oh wow. I didn't know about the latest one. I wonder if there's a demo on PS4.
