Games Beaten

-Kirby and the Rainbow Curse (Wii U)

The first thing you notice about Rainbow Curse is the faux claymation art style. I don't know why more games don't adopt something similar. The music is delightful, light fare also. Drawing lines to guide Kirby could grow monotonous over an extended play session, but it was perfect in shorter bursts of a level or two. The mechanics are explored in some very creative ways and the package includes bonus modes and collectables to fill out the experience. Good game.

-Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash (Wii U)

The underlying mechanics of Ultra Smash are perfectly sound but there is just nothing to do in the game. The closest thing to a single player campaign is the endless knockout challenge, which is technically a tie breaker mode. The one new addition is the mega mushroom, which feels kind of broken and caused me way more grief than fun. I had so much fun with the previous Mario Tennis games that this one is a colossal disappointment. I'm just glad we got it so cheaply.

Games Bought

August was a slow month for game acquisitions. My oldest son turned 8 and for his birthday, among other things, he got Paper Mario: Color Splash (Wii U), which he's watched playthroughs of more than once and has been asking for, and also The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Switch remake. Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout (PS4) was the big PS+ game for the month—it was fun for a few days lol—and also Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered (PS4). That title is sure a mouthful!

Games Being Played

-Astral Chain (Switch)

Life has conspired against me playing this game and it has taken way longer to get through than it should have. But I'm nearly done, I think, and do enjoy it whenever I get to play.

-New Super Luigi U (Wii U)

My wife and I tried playing this when it first came out and it was so hard. But while still quite difficult, playing it solo has been so much more manageable.

-Desiny 2 (PS4)

We keep talking about doing a raid...and then don't. But who knows! Maybe this week.

-God Eater 3 (PS4)

Continuing the post-game crawl. Trying to get a rank 7 weapon (the highest rank) in each of the weapon classes.

I got past No Russian in CoD MW 2: Remaster the REmake: The Movie: The Game: Electric Shootaloo and it was ... odd playing that level in 2020 for the first time.

Fall Guys would be more fun if I didn't DQ after round two or three every time.

I still haven't finished the first Modern Warfare Remaster campaign yet, despite having super nostagia for it. I'll play this one, probably, sometime. Cool to have it.

In my experience with Fall Guys, when I get knocked out the buttons to quit back to the title screen don't work half the time and I have to either watch the remaining rounds or close the game and launch it again. Busy server issue, maybe, but still very annoying.

I have spent a lot of time playing Mario sports games, and it is a big disappointment when one isn't good. Tennis seems like a perfect fit for the franchise, so it's sad the Wii U version sucked. I haven't played the Switch version.

I used to play a lot of Super Mario Strikers and the Mario Baseball game with my friend on Gamecube back around 2005. That was a lot of fun.

Oh man, Super Mario Strikers on the GameCube was the BEST! Knocking people into the electric fences never got old. And the mechanics were really good too, better than the Wii sequel, in my opinion.

I really liked the clay graphics in Rainbow Curse.  It's not my favorite Kirby game, but I do like it better than its predecessor, Canvas Curse.

Paper Mario: Color Splash isn't very good.  But luckily Origami King is much better.

Link's Awakening is my all time favorite Zelda game.  The Switch remake was my GOTY last year.

Sticker Star disappointed me so hard that I skipped Color Splash entirely. I know it's better than it's 3DS predecessor but I still doubt I'll actually get around to playing it.

In my opinion the only Game Boy game that can compete with Link's Awakening is Donkey Kong '94. I wish we'd get another game like that.

I think Sticker Star is one of NIntendo's worst games, along with Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast and Star Fox Zero.

Game Boy Donkey Kong is one of the best arcade remakes even to this day.

My interest in playing Kirby games seems to increase everytime I hear about one.

And there are a lot of Kirby games to hear about! Laughing Have you heard about Mass Attack? That's another cool, different take on Kirby.

Yes, Mass Attack. I want to try that.

I like Kirby games more than Mario games.

I think I agree.
