Games Beaten

-Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution! (GBA)

Risky Revolution has a lot going for it, like the beautiful sprite work, catchy soundtrack, varied locations, and plentiful secrets (though I wish the Secret Squids were more than just a collectible). The controls remain rock solid.  Rotating the background to a different position was a fun gimmick but in practice made exploration a little tedious since I would basically have to completely explore everything twice to see how the interplay between the fore- and background changed.  The pacing seemed a little off, too, with story bits sometimes coming in big clumps. It’s a middle-of-the-pack Shantae game, i.e., a solid and fun adventure.

-Picross S Namco Legendary Edition (Switch)

The Picross S games are always solid and this one is no exception. There are plenty of modes and lots of puzzles and the Namco theme is fun, though I wish it delved some into more recent Namco games and not just the classic stuff. My main gripe is the music. They used some, uh, very “classic” arcade music that was short and repetitive and became grating pretty quickly. I wish there was more music variety or, better yet, a way to customize which songs will play.

Games Bought

After a robust month of game acquisitions in May, June was quiet. I picked up Alone in the Dark (PS5) from PS+. That was all for June!

Game Being Played

-Pocky & Rocky Reshrined (Switch)

Been playing this game off and on for a week or two. Good challenge! I think I am near the end of the story. It's annoying that you have to beat the game once to be able to play co-op though.

-Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun (PS5) (PS+)

I have not actually played the original DOOM but this is supposed to be a good DOOMish game and I've enjoyed playing it. Maybe halfway through.

-Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak (Switch)

Recently felled the main Sunbreak big bad. Not sure where we stand in the story.

-Destiny 2 (PS5)

The other night we tried one of the dungeons on the hardest setting and made good progress but were unable to beat it. Maybe next time.

I thought you could change the music in the Namco Picross game in the options screen.  I seem to remember doing that anyway.  The problem with the music is they use the Famicom versions of the games' music, not the arcade.

I reviewed that Pocky and Rocky game.

I could swear I checked the options in the Namco Picross game and didn't see a way to change the music but maybe I missed it. I often played it before going to sleep, so I didn't really need the music anyway.

Oh, and since you said you liked the GBA Shantae game, I recommend you check out Pipistrello and the Cursed Yo-Yo.  I'm working on reviewing it right now, and it feels like a GBA game, too.

I play all sorts of stuff, but my buddy and I have always played FPS games like Boltgun together. When I come across another one (like I just saw a new Painkiller game coming soon) I show him and usually we are both playing it like crazy (recently Doom Dark Ages for instance).

FPS games do work so well in co-op. That's great that you and your buddy have been able to enjoy so many together. Do you have a specific game or series that you think is particulary great for co-op?
