Why Game Critics are Better Than Film Critics

Movie that knows how stupid it is and embraces that comes out. Tons of fun, with a few rough edges. You're an idiot if you like it according to critics. I'm not joking either, this is in nearly every Kick Ass 2 review.

I really loved the first Kick-Ass and it was critically acclaimed (77% RT score, certified fresh) for pretty much every reason you just mentioned, so I don't see what you're getting at, and I quite enjoy my film reviews. I mean most of the negative reviews for that one were about how it was morally and ethically wrong for a little girl to be kicking so much ass and shame on you for ... yeah, I see your point.

That's Kick Ass 1. I'm talking about Kick Ass 2.

I know, my point was that film criticism isn't always like that, so maybe they just didn't have the same opinion here, and it wasn't something that permeated all of film criticism; then I jokingly brought up the fact a lot of reviews for that movie were basically criticising the audience for being amoral automatons, which is more in agreement with the point you were making.

Well I stopped reading your comment when I said, "I don't know what you're getting at." Didn't see a reason to keep on when it was you missing my point when the thing was about KA2 getting shit on with really poorly written reviews, most of whom seemed to hate it the second they learned it was called Kick Ass.

My comment WAS a joke, dude ...

Well (and trust me, NOT trying to be a dick at all) it wasn't a good one.

Uh huh. Well, next time read the whole comment, realize that it might actually be agreeing with you; since you don't seem to handle dissent very well at all, to the point you can't read a comment all the way through without getting angry about it if it seems like disagreement; and you won't have to over-react to a comment made in jest.

I reread it after I made that first comment and still didn't get you were joking. I didn't get angry at it either, you're assuming. I thought "Okay, if he said this, he missed the point" which in hindsight was not a bad move because I didn't expect a joke out of it. For that I'm sorry. But shouldn't that I still couldn't tell after I read it the whole way through and read your follow up comment show that it may not be the best?

Also, I check comments to my other blogs. I handle dissent there. Maybe you're the one not handling dissent well here because I said your joke wasn't good? Not that you're bad at jokes, not that you're not funny ever, just that this one particular one wasn't good.

Seriously though, if you want to just drop it, I'm all in for that.

Kick Ass 1 did a great job contrasting the fictional comic book world with the real one. If you go out to stop crime in a superhero suit, you're going to get F'ed up. Kick Ass 2 didn't do this as well. It seemed confused as to whether to be silly or serious. I couldn't quite get on board with it. Man, did I want to like it though. There are still some good moments. Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Red Mist/Motherfucker) was great throughout.

Saints Row IV is definitely silly and the more I hear about it the more I want to play it. People keep suggesting it's like Crackdown. Music to my ears.

Huh, I never really had that issue. I was able to stay in the silly mindset the whole time well and have fun. Not to mention Mother Russia. Never played Crackdown, but SR4 is definitely worth your time.

Mother Russia was awesome!

I know you hate him, but this is why I watch movie bob. He'll tell you Evil Dead or Machete are great films, and he loves schlocky crap that's just entertaining.

Funny thing is, I actually don't hate Moviebob, I just hate him when he gets stubborn, which he's been doing too much with his video game shows for me to tolerate them anymore. With movies, despite the occasional Amazing Spiderman or Star Trek where he hated them before he saw them, he is a good reviewer with movies. I prefer RedLetterMedia's Half in the Bag for reviews, but they don't do everything and always have spoilers, which is when Moviebob's good.

Big Picture's also good too for the most part. It's really just the Overthinker I hate now, and I used to love that. Part of the reason his Anita video annoyed me so much was his second episode of Overthinker summed her up perfectly before anyone knew who she was. That's why I thought he was white knighting her so much.

Fair enough. I never watch that. Moviebob is alright with games but only retro games, so I tend to only watch his movie related content. I don't mind Jeremyjahns either, but that's more because the guy is just likable more than anything else, and he knows his modern games too!

Am I the only person who really liked Kickass 2?

Granted, I didn't like it as much as the first one, but I still really liked it.

The only movie reviewer that I follow is jeremyjahns because his reviews are funny and informative and have a better rating system than pretty much anything else for any other medium, it goes from dogsh*t to awesometacular lol and he's really funny. He also does some great game reviews as well.

A game's 'usability' can overcome deficiencies in areas that are detrimental to film if not well executed. SR4 could have shitty jokes, dumb writing and dialogue, poor characterization...but if it's fun to drive cars, fly planes, use superpowers, etc., it can still be considered a good product.

It's out of line to say people are stupid for enjoying a film, though. But I thought the first Kick Ass was a poor film. It couldn't survive what I felt was lame comedy, hammy acting, and weak cinematography.

I wonder if this is because of the movie/game gap in reguards to viewing it and interacting with it. Viewing it you know your watching dumb fun. Interactving with it you know your duing dumb things. Not sure if it's any better or different but I'm curious if anyone will go into broader detail on why which is which and how this makes it good or bad.
