PS4 So Far

So I got a PS4 and have been playing what little free time I have this weekend playing the hell out of it. Right now, I'm really enjoying the new hardware. The interface is a huge leap above the PS3's, giving the speed when transferring from games to menus that I get from my 360. It feels really nice to pause the game, go to the actual main menu, and go back right to where I was in the game.

The controller is a huge improvement over the Dualshock 3 as well. I always thought the older Dualshocks were the jack of all trades, with the Wii/Wii U providing a better 2D controller while the 360 gave a better controller for 3D games. This puts it on par with both of them. Analog sticks give a much better resistance than the past Dualshocks. Meanwhile the buttons feel a lot more clicky, more like a the Wii controller unlike the Dualshock 3's mushy buttons.

The touchpad is something I hope is used for slow paced segments or something which pauses the game like Mass Effect's weapon wheel and little beyond that. Using it to swipe in Killzone to switch commands for your floating droid works okay when time is not a factor. In heat of the moment, however, it feels like using a larger version of the 360's D-Pad. If it's just left to right or up and down, I could deal with that, but hope that either I'm proven wrong or this thing isn't used for tacked on shit like Six Axis.

Right now my favorite feature is the Share button which I've been using a lot. Setting up a Twitch and linking it to my PS4 was incredibly easy, while starting a stream is equally easy. I can already see huge potential as well. It's fun to watch my friends try to beat a level in Resogun. If any of my friends get a game I'm curious on either, it would allow me to watch them play and ask any questions about it.

Here's my Twitchif you want to check it out. Follow me on Twitter too if you want to know when I'm streaming and post shit you wish you hadn't read five seconds later.

Games

Killzone: Shadow Fall

I got this despite hating Killzone 2. It was easily in the worst shooter campaigns I'd ever played, down there with Duke Nukem Forever and Battlefield 3. So why get the new one? Well, first off everything I hated about 2's campaign is being fixed. Instead of needing for some scripted event to happen, you search for an objective to complete. Instead of shit Sixaxis prompts, there's a floating robot who does stuff with the touchpad.

Still, with these changes, the campaign is just above average right now. I've only got past Chapter 3, but that was a real slog, spending more time moving batteries than shooting enemies. If they made it a puzzle I'd be fine, but it was just moving stuff. The second chapter was better, but the game does not do a good job of making objectives clear which combined with ridiculously tiny text on them (and I play really close to a decent sized HDTV, so when I can't read it chances are the average gamer won't have a chance), so when I'm unsure what to do it was kind of a slog. The first chapter was the usual cinematic bullshit that bores us out of our minds. But when the game's good, it's a lot of fun, just a real mixed bag.

Multiplayer on the other hand is great. I can see why people pumped so many hours into it. I'm not sure if I'll be insanely addicted to it, but if I ever see a friend playing, I'll jump at the chance to join. Graphics are gorgeous, looking towards the sun is actually blinding, affecting your vision and the shadows are so detailed I tried sniping my own thinking it was an enemy. Little stuff like that makes it feel next gen.

Resogun

Shooters like these are the kind of game I always like, but never love. Resogun does not look to be an exception, but for what it is, it's pretty fun. It's played like Defender, but the screen turns 360 degrees which makes moving around fun visually. Enemies are plentiful and the added objective of saving humans from being abducted rather than just racking up points and a multiplier, which keeps things interesting. Bosses are also incredibly tough.

Skylanders: Swap Force

This is what I've been spending majority of my playtime on. Skylanders Giants was good, but this is a huge step up. The new Swap characters let you switch their top and bottom halves. Tops have two attacks while bottoms have one. The bottoms also let you access minigames within levels. Like one with rocket boots has a flying segment while a snake bottom which coils like a spring bounces from one platform to another.

His gun shoots piranhas. Fucking piranhas!

Even though these are a ridiculous way to bleed the cutomer with eight different types of traversals with the swaps, they go a long way in adding variety to the game. The game also does a better job of giving variety without this, with platforming (thanks to a new jump button), better puzzles, and fun new types of hazards.

Not to mention this game is gorgeous. Despite being a multiplatform game, the colors do an amazing job of popping out, creating a vibrance I haven't seen on current gen, the only game coming close being the Ratchet and Clank Future titles. Most of the touches are in ways where you can't tell exactly what they are and may not even be able to notice if looking up the game online, but I get that feeling of next gen.

There must be a way to get notified of people here streaming on Twitch. I guess I'll have to start a Twitch account and start following people there as well as Pixlbit.

If you set up an account on twitch, the default is that you will get an email when a channel you follow goes live. I am new to twitch too, but that's what it looks like...

Yeah, there's a bunch of settings you can use like that. Twitter just seems to be the easiest way to keep up with Twitch IMO since it's so fast and convenient. Hopefully they'll let us archive videos soon, found out that's not supported right now last night.

I'll try linking to Twitter. That sounds good.

I'll hold off until Infamous comes out. I'd rather a new graphics card than a console at this point.

Casey Curran Staff Writer

That's probably the better option for you, especially since you're already so invested in PC gaming. Infamous does look great though, but it may have to be put on hold since it's releasing the same month as South Park, MGS: Ground Zeroes, AND Titanfall.

Okay. I'll wait until the month after it's released then lol.

Well, for me personally. Those are all day one buys. South Park because combining that with Obsidian is the kind of awesome combination we need, but do not deserve. MGS because MGS, even when it's below par like 2 or 4 it's still worth playing for the discussions. And Titanfall because it looks ridiculously fun and any MP game changes after a few months.

hey good blog Greenman. Glad to hear the interface is better and the controller feels nice.

Yeah, the lineup is kind of weak... I'm not really into Skylanders, and Killzone doesn't appeal to me beyond the graphics.  I really want a PS4 but I think I'll wait til the spring.

Killzone's not that great as a campaign, but I'm loving the multiplayer and as a launch title, the way it shows off the tech makes me glad I got it. Plus with the Vita streaming I can finally play a competent shooter on the thing. Skylanders is a blast though, even if I completely understand why anyone doesn't want to get invested in it.

Once the PS4 has enough games that I'm interested in, then I'll consider buying one.

Right now you'd enjoy Resogun and....yeah, that's probably the only PS4 exclusive. I mean, Knack is the only other that looks like it could interest you, but word points to mediocrity for that one.

I have heard from freinds that psn is a mess and the library of games is just updated ps3 titles so I will wait for a year or so then get one :)

PSN isn't really a mess, I only had issues with party chat and Killzone once and that had to do with my friend's poor internet connection. First night I was playing Killzone lag free in a party of three.

How many Killzone games are there?  Are they that good?  Maybe I'll check out a game on my PS3.

There's six now, the numbered ones are all in the trilogy for PS3, though one of them's a PS2 HD rerelease. Then there's Liberation for PSP, Mercenaries for Vita, and Shadow Fall for PS4. I've played 2, Liberation, and Shadow Fall. Hated 2's campaign, thought Liberation had nice ideas (a top down shooter rather than an FPS), but the one weapon limit killed it for me, and Shadow Fall is above average campaign. The series is more MP over SP from what I've seen, but I've heard from a lot of people 1 had a pretty good campaign.

Nice overview of your experience. Resogun looks interesting. Like Cary said, I'm still for games that catch my interest to be released or at least on the horizon.

I'm sure it will get games. I got one early mostly for game nights since so many of my friends were getting one.

Nice read, I think I was the only person who was ok with the the XMB but I thought it could be better. Good to know Sony updated it. I like the idea of having the touchpad, but I wonder if Sony messed up by having it in the front, or putting it behind the controller like on the Vita. My opinion will probably change about the front/back, once I get my hands on a controller.

I keep hearing/reading about Resogun. This might be one of the first games I play when I get my PS4

I think they made the right move putting it where it is, putting the Vita's on the back leads to a lot of accidental uses of the thing. The XMB was fine the way it was organized, but god damn it was way too slow. Compare it to how quick my 360 is, and it was really noticeable.

A guy at work is super excited and cannot wait to pick up a PS4 whenever they become available again.  I mention this only because his excitement is very contagious and I am having difficulty remembering why I canceled my PS4 pre-order.

It is contagious. Probably wouldn't have one if any of my friends didn't get one.

I really hope Capcom doesn't blow Deep Down, which is the game any near future adoption of next gen console hinges around (unless they announce for PC, which I'm trying to maintain as my main platform for the future). I already have a problem with the camera.  It's that RE6, too close to the character, cuts off the left side of your FoV camera. It's already bad enough for ranged combat, I wonder how bad it's going to be for melee. Still, the art direction really appeal to me; lighting and particle effects look great, better than anything in current gen for sure. Throwing magic grenades looks fun.

I'm really surprised their hasn't been much talk about BF4 on PS4. Looks and plays great.  That game alone has me tempted. Buying a PS4 would be cheaper than upgrading to Windows 7 AND new hardware components, but I don't have the money for either right now.

I'm hoping for good things from Deep Down too, but the free to play model is what really worries me. I'm not against F2P as a whole, it works brilliantly in DOTA 2, but Capcom is king of bad microtransactions, them using that model just reeks of trouble. Right now my main game I'm waiting on for PS4 is Destiny, know it's coming to current gen too, but too many of the people I play with online are getting it for PS4 and co-op will be half the fun of it.

Taht reminds me I need to set up my own Twitch account for my potential purchase of a PS4 later on.

I wasn't too sure about Killzone as well but people seem to say it warrants a system buy. Still abit dibuious seeing (and reading) all the reviews. I definite check out your Twitch channel once i'm all set up.

Seems we agree on most of this stuff. I really need to just jump into KZ multiplayer as the campaign is still kind of all over the place. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I kind of hate it.

What kind of game is Skylanders exactly? Seems like a well-rounded action/adventure game with a focus on combat. I never really looked into it before watching you play a couple times, but you were in the arena both times.

Casey Curran Staff Writer

It's mostly an action adventure game. There's some light RPG elements too, collecting orbs from beating enemies gives you experience for levels (mainly increases health/damage/defense) while money can be spent on new attacks and abilities. There's also a few puzzles which are pretty simple and Swap Force adds some light platforming. Structure gives you a hub world with a few, but not too many things to do where you pick your missions, which have a lot of hidden paths to collect stuff.

You do have to put some kind of investment in to get the most out of it though. Play with what the game gives you and it's alright. Snag a Skylander of each element with a bit of variety between playstyles (especially if they're all Swap ones, they have their own special bonus mini levels depending on their bottom halves) and it's able to stay fresh for a while.

I'll Twitch a regular level sometime this weekend if you want a better idea of what it is.
