1up's end marks my new beginning

I learned from a Tweet by Jeremy Parish early this morning that 1up.com is officially dead. As we know the site stopped production a while back but the plug has finally been pulled. 1up.com no longer exists. R.I.P.

I guess the timing was right, Jeremy said the last remaining blogger gave up a few weeks ago, so I'm glad the floor didn't drop out on anyone that was still blogging there. Still, such a shame to have 10 years of work and community flushed away in an instant.

So with the end of 1up comes my new beginning, I just became a dad.

Yup, I'm a parent, its still sinking in. My daughter is beautiful and I'm a changed man.

In other news, I recently had a HUGE major surgery, I corrected something I was born with that should have been corrected when I was a lad, but you know how these things go. The procedure itself turned out to be worse than their worse case scenario. It was supposed to take 3 hours with a few days in the hospital, then 3 weeks out of work. Instead, a 6 hour surgery and 6 days in the ICU and 2 more in the hospital, I'm still out of work almost two months later. Everything went great, though, I'll be able to do things actively I haven't been able to do since I was a teen.

I was looking forward to the time off from work to play some of my game backlog and do some writing, but between the heavy medication and recovery I couldn't even look at games for about 3 weeks. When I did finally get back to playing it took a while to get my skills back. Finally after about a month I got my game on and been tearing into some stuff. I also did a full inventory of my game collection. I shocked even myself, I had no idea how many games I had. Roughly 1200 games down to the last loose Atari 2600 E.T. cart (all 3 of them).

The backlog game I was able to finish was Spec Ops: The Line. What a great game! Call of Duty can sure use some advice on storytelling from these guys. Its one of those games that sticks with you long after you've finished.

I've also been playing the new Strider, which I wasn't sure about at first but it grew on me, and I'm still playing CoD Ghosts and Black Ops 2 multiplayer.  I've also been playing World of Tanks on XBLA, it can be pretty slow going but once you grab a decent tank and get some of the tactics down it can be pretty addicting. It’s a good game to play online with friends in a chat party.

I'm also happy I see a game on the horizon that just might make me excited to grab a current gen console. No Man's Sky looks fantastic, so far it’s a PS4 exclusive so that may be my what I end up getting. Eventually.

For now I'm filling bottles with formula and stressing over every little coo and cry and fuss the baby makes. Sleep is a rarity but I'm managing to get enough in. So please chime in with your comments, I'll be keeping an eye out and responding.

Take care, everyone.

HEY! I'm IGN's reviews editor, and former EIC of GameSpy. I'll file a support ticket right now, because this isn't supposed to happen. It's a glitch, nothing more. Believe me, if they ever plan to take it down, there'll be an effort to preserve all the content!

Thanks Angelo Grant for Tweeting, btw

The only reason why bloggers gave up is because recently the site was frozen. You could log in (if your lucky) but you couldn't post comments or blogs. I spoke about it online since I've yet to give up but I guess I didn't try to talk to the right people. Plus I figured it was the final days for the site physically.

wow. didn't know life was like that for you .Congrats on the new little one and your surgery. Now I feel bad for challenging you to a Pac off.

I tried world of tanks but I ended up going towoard PSN's Ace Combat Infinity. What can I say, I"m more of a flying than a tanker. I just hope my grandpa can forgive me God rest his soul.

Don't apologize for offering to play a game with me, not a problem at all. I just haven't played much at all. When I get Pac-Fever again I'll let you know. And thanks :)

Wow...so it's finally happned. I feel a little sad that my reviews I spent so much time writing no longer exists on the site where it all started for me. But, that's how it goes I guess.

Anyway congrats on the baby girl. Glad to hear that you are doing better these days.

That's the only good side of being in recovery for something. You can catch up on some games/books/whatever.

Congrats on being a dad!  Now you can read the GamerDad.com site I write for. :)

Yeah I was pretty sad when 1up shut down.  I had been active there for 8 years and had a lot of great memories.  I'm glad they kept it up a little bit afterward so I could collect contacts and anything I wanted to save.  I still posted blogs there simply because I already had them written, so why not?  But if they're not going to do anything with it, I think they just need to shut it down to have a sense of closure.  I'm glad PixlBit is around to pick up where 1up left off.

Personally I'd love to see it live on through the blogging community. It would be nice if they could at least add a splash page honoring its legacy with a link to the blogs.

Though it's dead, I'm glad 1UP is still up.  I don't log in, but I check out old blogs and comments at least a couple times a week.

Congrats on fatherhood.  Remember to laugh during the good times and the not-so-good.  Children destroy a lot of your stuff.  Or maybe that's just my kids. Laughing

Its not just you. My six year old recently spilled a tall glass of ice cold milk on our laptop. ..lol. Gotta laugh about that sort of thing or else it can make you very angry

Dude you buried the lead, Congrats on the baby!

As for 1Up, sad to see it go. I had some good times reading various blogs, getting into discussions with folks, and finally jumping in and writing my one randoms. It was a fun site, but I'm happy to have a home like Pixlbit!

Congrats on being a dad! And congrats on not dying during surgery! That's super awesome :D

Also, yeah, I noticed 1up was dead when I tried to grab some of my old blogs to see if there were any good ideas I could rewrite. Oh well, it's gone now :'(
