So I finally read my first Spider-Man comic, Spider-Man: Blue by Jeph Loeb (writer) and Tim Sale (artist). It was really good! As you can imagine from the title, though, it was sad. Not the raw emotion of fresh sadness, but the dull ache of remembered loss. It's Peter Parker remembering his time with Gwen Stacy, remembering the events that led up to her death. It doesn't actually cover her death because that's not the point. (I'm not sure how she died since I haven't read the original comics but I inferred it was the Green Goblin.) As a tale of Peter's memories it is quite effective. And we get to see a bunch of classic villains along the way, like the Lizard, Vulture (two Vultures, actually), Rhino, and Green Goblin. The art was really good too. I wasn't sure what to expect because the work of Tim Sale I'd seen before was on Batman (Haunted Knight, Long Halloween, and Dark Victory) with lots of interesting uses of perspective and color to create that dark, brooding atmosphere that works so well for Batman. Thankfully, Sale proves a versatile artist and the work in Blue is very bright and colorful. Lots of big spreads highlight Spidey and the villains. The story and art fit together really well and the whole left me, well, feeling a little blue. Spider-Man was also a nice change of pace from the darker things I tend to read. It won't be my last jaunt with him in New York, I'm sure.

I also started playing Kirby's Dream Collection. It's a nice counterpoint to Mass Effect 3. I played through Dream Land in a sitting and have moved onto Kirby's Adventure. My word, I haven't played this game since it came out on the NES. I remember the Sun and Moon boss blew my mind as a kid. I thought that was so cool! Can't wait to get to that point this time. It amazing how Dream Land introduced Kirby but Adventure really defined him. We're essentially still playing this Kirby game today, and that's not a bad thing at all.

So how is everybody else spending their weekend? I've been called into work overtime tomorrow, which sucks but hey, it's nice money. Probably play more ME3 tonight but maybe I'll get in some Kirby's Adventure right now. My two-year-old son loves watching it Smile

My very first comic was Spidey, still have it too. But I have not read this one so I will have to keep an eye out for it. I really like the colors and art style.

I missed the first Kirby game but I became a fan with Kirby Super Star on the SNES. I will have to break down and get this from the Wii shop, it has been on my list for a minute.

Everything written by Jeph Loeb that I've read has been good. I've heard he did this color thing for Daredevil and Hulk (Yellow and Gray, respectively), so I'm interested in reading those.

Kirby's Dream Collection for the Wii is a great value. I highly recommend it!

Technically, the Green Goblin didn't physically kill Gwen, it just involved him. I didn't know what happens in the comics until after I went online to find out having seen Amazing Spider-Man 2. Both versions have the same culprit, though things play out differently.

Interesting. I still need to see that movie too.

Just gonna warn you The Last Ninja's comment spoils it for the comics. It is slightly different in the movie though. Same emotional angle, but physical way it goes down is different. Movie is a bit of a mess (or a WEB of plot threads if you will), but I LOVED it.

Dang those ninjas, spoiling everything!

Kirby's Adventure is pretty amazing for a NES game.  It's one of the last NES games ever made and it's the largest in size, memory-wise.  I actually didn't play it when it first came out, as I was knee-deep in SNES territory by then.  Really, the Kirby game that made me be a fan was actually Kirby's Dream Course!  I did go back and play Adventure in college, though.

It looks really good for an NES game. There is noticeable slowdown when too many bad guys get on the screen, especially if you use a power. But it's a lot of fun!

Wait, that was THE first Spider-man comic you've read? No way! SM comics are so good! Now I'm intrigued. I wanna read this. Anyways, in the original series, the Green Goblin throws Gwen off a bridge, Spidey snags her with a web, and her neck snaps. Sad, right? The new movie actually was really close, they did a great job with that scene.

Kirby is awesome! As for me, right now I'm playing through Layton Vs. Wright and really enjoying it. It's very different story-wise from both those series since they're in a world where magic exists and logic doesn't. Very interesting, and the dialogue, as always, is top-notch.

I assume the soap opera they used to have in the Sunday funnies doesn't count Wink It's really good. You should definitely track it down. I still need to see that new movie though.

And I'll play that new Wright/Layton game sometime too! Still surprised it got a physical release.

Great story.  Spiderman Blue was one of the first books that I read when I was seriously reading comic books.  When I mean serious I only read trades, but still I read a lot over the course of a couple of years.  I was supremely disappointed when I found out that Loeb and Sale were not continueing their "color" series with Captain America:  White.  Daredevil:  Yellow and Hulk:  Gray may not be as good as Spiderman:  Blue, but they are definitely worth your time...

Speaking of Loeb and Sale, I really should dig all those books out and read them again...  especially their story about my favourite superhero, Superman:  For All Seasons.

Superman is your favorite? He always seemed so overpowered as to be dull, but then again I've never read any of his comics, so what do I know? I'm intending to read Kingdom Come eventually and Supes is on the cover of that lol. But I'll keep an eye out for For All Seasons. I'm certainly a Loeb fan!

That Kirby's Dream Collection is great. I recently played through it while I still had a Wii. Don't forget about Kirby's Dream Land 2 on Gameboy! It improves upon the first game by quite a bit. Kirby's Adventure was the only Kirby game I knew for a long time. Your right about the slowdown. It can be pretty bad at times. HAL Laboratory must have pushed the NES hard when they made that.

I'm looking forward to getting to Dream Land 2. I was so excited for that game when it first came out Laughing

Do  you not have a Wii anymore?

Nah. I got rid ot it. I wasn't a fan of the Wii to be honest. Not with the gimmicky motion controls, vast amounts of shovelware, and having to buy batteries all the time.

I want that Kirby Dream Collection.

I have the oposite situation this weekend. A car smashed into the store I work at and it's closed for a week to fix it. I'm on forced vacation.

With all that time off, now would be a great time to have that Dream Collection lol. Enjoy your forced vaction!

I was just at the Destiny launch with a friend and thought maybe I should've gotten Destiny. I have most of the rest of the week to play it.

never got into spiderman. Must be because of my dislike of spiders. But I knew a female friend who just loved the guy. not sure if she loved peter parker or spider man himself.

I saw Kirby Dream Collection on sale in one of my local retro game stores. But I didn't buy it. please forgive me.

You don't like Spider-Man? You should give him a chance. He's really not much like a real spider Wink And you didn't buy Kirby's Dream Collection?? You are forgiven...this time. Now go buy it!

I'm a huge Spiderman fan and Blue is one of my favorites. I think it really nails the melancholy feel it was going for

daftman

It definitely nailed that feeling. And it's nice to hear all Spidey's quips after so much stoic Batman lol.
