5 Things Destiny 2 Needs

So I traded in Destiny with it. I liked the game, but there was not enough to keep the game fresh. There was plenty of content, but what it lacked was effort.

Turn Story Missions and Strikes into Halo Levels

What made me so excited for this game was the idea that we could have a loot RPG with the design and care put into a linear shooter like Halo. I can count the number of times we got that. My suggestion would be to design these just like they would with Halo. Have giant battlefields, have vehicles everywhere,

Greater Enemy Diversity

Yahtzee hit the nail on the head in his latest Zero Punctuation review. Halo had enemies of all shapes and sizes, each having their own distinct look with their own tactics. Destiny has the second part, though not to the same extent as Halo. There are a few different kinds of enemy attack partterns and weak spots, but they mostly look the same and blur together. I think there were three different factions, but I have no clue what their different goals were, if they even have any. This is mitigated a little more on Mars, but not enough.

The next Destiny should make enemies as diverse as the Covenant and Flood, both between each other and within their own groups. I saw enemies shooting at each other, let the ones from each side stand out from one another. And let me know why they're shooting at each other.

More Environment Variety

Destiny only has four planets to roam around in. These planets are sizable and have their own distinct look and feel, but still. In my mind, I feel like since they have the groundwork done, a sequel should keep that number of large planets, maybe even one less and throw in a bunch of smaller planets. Or have planets each have their own subsection each with its own look. Maybe one is a ruined city while another is a jungle full of wildlife. Destiny already has the second idea to an extent, but it is not nearly fleshed out as well. They just feel like pieces of an area rather than an interesting place you want to explore.

Better Lore

I still have no idea what happened in the backstory other than people used to live on planets and now they live in the tower, which is basically a bizarro Deathstar. What was life like on these planets? How did the moon, Mars, and Venus become hospitable? How has humanity been affected by this? This is a conceptually interesting world with boring execution.

Replace Peter Dinklage

This is more a personal thing, but everyone pretty much agrees that Peter Dinklage does not deliver on his voice acting. The guy is a fine actor, hell, his scenes are the only bits from Game of Thrones that put me to sleep. The issue may be bad direction or that he does not work as a voice actor. Either way, I think there should be a different guide for the sequel. My suggestion: Chris Pratt. He's the polar opposite of Peter Dinklage's character and if he could give his usual enthusiasm, he would make the game more fun.

didn't this game cost like $500 million or something?  where did the money go?

Lots of dedicated servers?

$450 million to marketing.  $50 million to Bungie.

The game definitely shows its budget through polish and they're doing a lot more to keep content constantly coming in, which can't be cheap. But they're spending a lot of it in the wrong places (marketing is way too bloated for instance).

My friend at work is still going strong in the game trying to get to level 29 or whatever. I watched a video of people doing silly things in Crucible. Reminded me of old Halo 2 days. Then I heard Bungie shut down a loot cave that everyone was using to gather high level weapons and stuff. I guess people are either just grinding now or goofing off in Crucible. It amazes me how quickly people suck up all the content in these games.

Considering this type of game is meant to have a lot more content though, it doesn't really surprise me.

Basically: Make a good game next time. Oh, and release it on PC - preferrably without the asshole remarks about the platform or the smug superiority. Because seriously:

"We limited players to two weapons, we gave them recharging health, we automatically saved and restored the game -- almost heretical things to first-person shooters at the time. We made the game run without a mouse and keyboard. And now nobody plays shooters the way they used to play them before Halo 'cause nobody wants to."

That's why people hate bungie. Smug assholes.

I don't see how any of those are bad things in Halo. A game where all those design choices completely make sense and complement its style of shooting. They weren't making the guidelines for every other FPS developer to mimic, they were making a good shooter. Nothing wrong if you don't like it, but there's also nothing wrong with making a game that way if you do it for the right reasons.

And Destiny is still a good enough game. My issue isn't that it's bad, it's that when a game is hyped to that degree and a developer is given that much freedom for a new IP, good enough is not good enough. I wrote this blog because I expect more out of Bungie because they're a great developer. Hopefully still are and aren't going to join Square and Double Fine in the list of has beens.

But there should also be a PC version. That was inexcusable bullshit.

I'm don't have a problem with them being in Halo. I have a problem with the assholes saying that nobody wants to play a first person shooter that isn't like Halo. Nobody wants to play a game without regenerating health, a two limit or with a mouse and keyboard. Of course not you smug cunts.

An I understand that, but i was sceptical as soon as it was announced they were going to make an MMO. Bungie are talented, don't get me wrong. The games aren't for me, but they are solid. With an MMO, you have to make concessions. You have to limit yourself because of the costs involved and the manpower to make it happen. I thought they could make a decent MMO, but I knew as soon as it was described as an MMO I knew it was going to let down everybody - the expectations would just be too high, as they always are with these types of games.

And yes. It not being on PC "because this kind of game wouldn't sell on PC" and then "because we don't have enough money to bring it to PC was bullshit. You know how many people still play Halo on PC? Fucking tonnes. The servers still have tonnes of players. You know how many people would play Halo 2 on pc if weren't exclusive to Vista - which, by they way was a great move if you wanted to sell no units of the game on PC. Then they complained that PC is dead because no one bought their game because they're fucking idiots and released it on Vista exclusively.

 Sorry. Rant over.

There won't be a Destiny 2... isn't this game supposed to be an MMOFPS of sorts?

From the start they've said there are going to be 4 games each with its own unique expansions.

Huh didn't know about that.

Great list. The first might be the most important to me. Not because I want Destiny to be Halo, but because I took for granted that Destiny's levels/scenarios/encounters would be as fun as Halo's and they weren't. These are the things Bungie excels at. Get this right and all the other stuff can help to differentiate it and help make it even cooler. I'd throw more cool special melee weapon pick ups (like that sword level) too. I know we are working on leveling up guns, but I'd happily take a break to wield some huge hammer or something more often.

I'd add maybe more interesting boss encounters, but that could probably fit into the enemy diversity one. Even then the more important part is just making really kickass normal enemy encounters and while I think Halo is better, Destiny did have some winners there. But something a little more interesting from the bosses might not hurt.

Casey Curran Staff Writer

They could even have the hammer be your heavy weapon. That could work really well. More interesting bosses is definitely a good idea too. I'll cut them some slack only there though since they're not experienced with making great bosses.

And what you're getting at with making it like Halo is exactly what I was getting at. This doesn't need to be Halo, what it needs is to play to Bungie's strengths as a developer. This game did not do that, it played to their weak points. Hopefully the next game can work on the latter while putting in more of the former.

I was interested in Destiny originally, but the more I've read about it the less interested I was. I'm probably going to skip it altogether. Looks too much like a FPS MMORPG for my taste, and if I want a MMO, I'll stick with FFXIV.

Destiny definitely isn't your cup of tea. Even though I like it overall (my review's enough proof of that), it does feel like another soulless AAA game.

The one thing that bothers me in this game is that it takes forever to jump into a mission and that odd wait after you finish a mission. I wish I could just jump into the next mission or do some wandering around before I decide its time to go back to the ship.

While I do agree with these 5 points, I find myself having difficulty putting the game down.  At the same time, you have probably put a significant more amount of time into the game than I have.  So, we will see if I burn out in the next week or so.

Destiny 2? Wouldn't most of these issues be addressed in later patches? I thought Destiny was a long term series given how it was billed.
