One of those big, life-changing events

My wife has been pregnant for a while now (months and months!) but her due date arrived and still no baby. So we had an induction scheduled for Friday, October 10 (yesterday as of this writing). But Thursday morning, right after I finished my shower before work, her water broke. I love clear signs like that lol. So we headed to the hospital and literally an hour later she gave birth to our second son. Thing is, it went so fast that she didn't have time to get an epidural AND my son weighed 9 lbs 1.5 oz and was 20 inches. That's a big baby to push out! But mommy and baby were both healthy and complicaton-free, so we're not going to complain (too much).

Me and the Boys, Oct 10

Me and the boys while still at the hospital

In other news New 52 Batman has been quite good. I read the first two volumes, The Court of Owls and The City of Owls. I liked it. The Owl story arc built to a nice finale, introducing (what I assume is) a new villain for Batman. But that was the middle of the volume and they seemed to move to the back burner after that. Then I started the third volume, Night of the Owls, only to discover that it isn't the third volume. Night of the Owls, it turns out, is an event in the New 52 Bat-universe and the collection with that title simply, well, collects the stories that take place during that night. It's a cool idea and I'm glad I got to read it but I wish it had been labeled more clearly. A big chunk of the book came from The City of Owls, so I skipped over those parts, but I got to sample a lot of the other Batman comics. I was already planning on reading Nightwing and Batgirl because I've seen them at the library but it looks like they're going to be pretty good. On the flip side I discovered that I'm not interested in Batman Incorporated or Birds of Prey. And why is Batman: Detective Comics its own thing? Seems like it's just another comic starring Batman (not necessarily a bad thing). I'm ambivalent about Batman & Robin, mainly because this Robin is annoyingly cocky. We'll see. And it all depends on what the library has anyway.

Speaking of which, I went today to return those books and hoped to get the Nightwing trades but they were out. I grabbed the first two volumes of Batgirl, though, and the first of Batwoman. I didn't even know Batwoman was a thing until recently and it doesn't look like it ties into the other current Batman comics. Looks weird, to be honest, but I'll give it a try. But first I gotta finish the third volume of Sandman. This one is a collection of independent stories (as opposed to the overarching tale of volume 2) and so far they've been really interesting. There was even one all about cats! Neil Gaiman continues to deliver.

Gaming has been slow. With all this stuff going on lately it's just been easier to read. Still working my way through Mass Effect 3 and loving it but I don't get as many chances to play it as I'd like. Helping the Quarians right now. Been playing Monster Hunter Freedom Unite as well but that game can be really hard. Progress is slow. I played a little Kirby's Dream Land 2 a couple days ago (my two-year-old son loves watching that) but haven't gotten back to it yet. Just too much to do.

Dr. Who—Orient Express

While I'm rambling, anybody else watch Dr. Who tonight? I thought that episode was really good. I always love a good mystery and the Orient Express—in space!—setting was genius! Plus Clara looks really good in 1920s getup Wink I wonder if this Gus person/computer/entity/whatever will be part of the overarching story for this season...?

Well, I'm going to bed. A little somebody will probably be getting me up in the middle of the night anyway. If you stuck with me all the way to this point, then good for you. Feel free to get me back by rambling in the comments.

Thanks! I saw you had a new blog but didn't get a chance to look at it. Life, ya know. Glad you're back!

I thought it only wandered to the right.

Congrats on the latest arrival. may he be handling a controller in 14 months times. It's my hope that my first daughter will be an October baby. I look forward to be all goth and everything when she comes of age =)

Odd given you say Batman 52 is pretty good when most are calling for this New 52 to end.

Hope you get some Octoberween gaming in before the time is up.

I have yet to get to Doctor Who thus far. I'm not sure I'm all for this focus on Clara. I know the companions have played a focal point in story archs but I'm watching Doctor Who for THE DOCTOR. not for the companion. they seem to be doing all the can to highlight Clara. More than they did with Amy Pond.

Thanks! My two-year-old son (26 months, to be specific) isn't handling any controllers yet but he does play iPad games meant for 3-5 year olds, so I think he'll catch on pretty quick. This new one will probably be the same Smile

My metric for evaluating the New 52 is my own enjoyment, and so far I've liked what I've read. I can't speak to the entire New 52 (I've heard they've canceled more lines than they have going at this point) or comics at large, for that matter, but I've enjoyed Batman.

Not sure what I'm going to do about Octoberween gaming yet because I haven't had a lot of time to really sit down and concentrate on one thing for long (and these types of games require that). Plus I was hoping Backloggers would do something for Halloween but doesn't look like it. I have plenty to choose from, though, so I'll try to pick something!

It seems to me that it's taken the Doctor longer than usual to acclimate after this last regen and Clara has carried it a little because of that. But I've enjoyed the episodes and thought last night's was really good. It was very Doctor-focused. Clara just looked really good Wink

I'll be on Vita on Sunday evening if you're around for Silent Hill: Book of Memories. I found out you can gain levels and equipment in single player and take them over to multi, so if you're busy, I'll do some single player and try and get beefed up. I also found out you can replay all the levels in multi. The levels randomly change and the enemies scale up to the host's experience level.

Congrats on the new baby!

That's good to know! I don't think I'll be available tonight (new baby and all) but hopefully next week. Hopefully you won't get too far ahead or the scaled baddies will really give me trouble lol. But by all means go ahead Smile

I replayed the frist few levels. I'm gaining some cash, but I use up everything else. It's really hard to hold onto weapons you like when you run out of repair wrenches all the time.

I loved last night's show and think that there has been some really good writing this season. The only letdown was last weeks Moon episode IMO.

My wife, who only used to put the show on for me to watch now loves it and looks forward to it every week. Capaldi is great at deadpan humour and Coleman makes a great companion.

Congrats on the new baby.

I think a lot of the backlash at Capaldi is simply because he's older. Yeah, he's been a butt munch to Clara in some of the episodes but I've seen some people really nitpick at little things to complain about him. And last night's episode was a definite improvement in the Doctor-Clara relationship. I've enjoyed this season so far.

As someone who has based an entire career on change I'm painfully aware that a lot of people don't like it and push back against change as if it were the most evil thing on earth. It takes people out of their comfort zone. They piss and moan even when there's nothing to complain about.

As far as focusing on companions, they've been doing it since Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, Donna Noble and Amy. They all had back stories that were explored during their tenure in the companion seat. I guess maybe because Clara is the most three dimensional she sticks out like a sore thumb. Is that bad? I don't think so.

Congrats, and I am loving this season of Doctor Who.  I may not be sold on this incarnation of the Doctor, but I do enjoy how Capaldi is portraying him, just not the character.
