Penumbear iconOne of hallmarks of the archtypical indie game is that it has a cool art style that catches the eye, and Penumbear certainly nails that. When you get down to it, it's a puzzle platformer but it's presented very well. The graphics aren't as stark as LIMBO but they are mostly black and white with colors used to denote actual light, and light plays an important role in this game.

You play a magically animated teddy bear (apparently) and must explore a castle or something. I don't know, the game doesn't really spell it out for you and that's fine. In practical terms you explore self-contained levels looking for the exit door, which you often need keys, i.e., green fireflies, to open. Light comes into play because it creates walls and platforms. Hard surfaces. Need to get across that gap? If you can turn on a light on one side of an object, you can run along the shadow it casts on the other side. If you have a large vocabulary, you might realize now that the title is rather clever. A penumbra is "the partially shaded outer region of the shadow cast by an opaque object," but you play as a bear that can run on the edge of shadows: A penumbear! (Don't feel bad. I had suspicions but had to go look up the definition of penumbra.)

Anyway, it's a cool game. Probably has a gob of levels and there are extra teddies to find strewn about the levels for you completionist types. It's also pretty forgiving with its platforming, so the virtual controls weren't an issue for me at all. If the trailer tickles your fancy, by all means check it out.

Good review, Cary! I think you did a better job of explaining it than me lol. It's definitely a cool game.
