February 2015 Recap

This is definitely the latest I've ever posted one of these recaps. I had the one-two punch moving last week, not having internet, and then heading straight back to work. (I guess that's three punches lol.) The new apartment is great but we still have stuff everywhere. But that's not what I'm here to talk about, so let's get to it!

Games Beaten

-Final Fantasy II (GBA)

FFII is an odd game. The leveling system (things improve as you use them, max health increases as you take damage) basically breaks the game, making it a cakewalk by and large. The story isn't very compelling, though the music is very good (of course!) and I love the SNES-esque graphics. It's not a classic like its predecessor but it's a fun historical curiosity. I'm glad to have played it...and to have it done and behind me.

Games Bought

February was one of the most epic game-buying months we've ever had! A big part of that was that we got our tax refund (woot!) and one of the first things we did was buy a PS4. We had a buy 2 get 1 free coupon for GameStop and used it to get Wolfenstein: The New Order, Far Cry 4, and Destiny (all for PS4). I've also been looking to get Dead Space 2 (360) after playing the first one last year, and GameStop had a nice copy. But they were running a 3-for-$10 special on select games and instead of paying $9 for DS2, I got it, God of War Collection (PS3), and Resistance 3 (PS3) for $10. Seemed like a good deal to me! I also bought Final Fantasy XIII (PS3), which I've been meaning to do for a while, and now seemed like a good time lol.

That would have been a decent month in purchases already but we weren't done. We filled a few holes in our collection with Capcom Classics Collection: Reloaded (PSP), Digital Devil Saga (PS2), Bayonetta 2 (Wii U) (it included the original Bayonetta as well), and Watch Dogs (Wii U). My wife also got the Wii U game based on Planes because my older son loves that movie and it was cheap and has pretty decent reviews. He's still too young for it but I'm sure he'll enjoy that eventually.

Then on one of the PSN flash I bought Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris for the PS4 (Guardian of Light was the first game we ever downloaded on our 360 all those years ago) and Hard Corps: Uprising for the PS3. I never did give that Contra-ish game a chance and hope to rectify that now. Then GameFly had a sale and we picked up a couple more PS4 games—Murdered: Soul Suspect and Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments (that one is ironic considering March's PS+ games but I'm glad to have it on PS4; it is supposedly very pretty).

Later in the month we found a used copy of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U), which was the only time I've ever seen it used, and Legacy of Kain: Defiance (PS2). One day I will actually play that series lol. We capped off our month of purchases with The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (3DS).

And then, of course, there are the PS+ games. The game I'm most excited about is Transistor (PS4). I never did get around to playing Bastion, so hopefully this game won't suffer the same fate. There is also Greek-themed platformer Apotheon (PS4), which looks cool but I've heard has some problems. For the PS3 there was Yakuza 4—I always thought my wife would like this series—and Thief, which I'm a little torn about. I was excited for this game before it came out but the reviews cooled my enthusiasm. I hadn't planned on getting it but Sony has made that a moot point. Perhaps I'll try it at some point. The other games are Kick & Fennick (Vita), which I know nothing about, and Rogue Legacy. That one is available for all three platforms but if I play it, it will be on the Vita.

Now Playing

-Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze (Wii U)

I'd heard that this was a hard game and it's true! One of the reasons is that you share the same pool of lives on co-op (that's how we're playing), so if either person has a bad run, then you're in trouble. It's still a lot of fun, though, and oh so pretty. DK is so fluffy o_O

-Destiny (PS3)

My older brother has been playing this almost since it came out and finally talked me into trying it with him. I think we're about done with the missions in Old Russia.

-Super Smash Bros. (Wii U)

Before the move we finished unlocking all the characters. There is so much to do in this game!

-Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP)

I'd been getting trashed by some of the high level monsters lately but I finally finished a new set of armor. It looks funny but gives me a much better defense.

wow not many people make it through FF2 from what i understand.  that's sort of the black sheep in the family, but from what I heard necessary to work out some ideas.

Dead Space 2 is a very cool game.  good sequel. good moments in it.

I'd like to play Watch Dogs on my Wii U but I've heard so many mixed things about that game.  Maybe when it drops in price more, I'll pick it up.

those DOnkey Kong games are WAY too hard for my impatient soul.

Hope you're doing well!

Things are going fairly well, I think. The boys both have colds and I think they're passing it to me Undecided but otherwise...

My wife is the one that wants to play Watch Dogs. Maybe I'll try it one day. It's down to $28 on Amazon. That's not too bad.

I still need to get Bayonetta 2.  I really want that game.

I had planned on getting it when it first came out but then something came up and I had to wait. Glad to finally have it.

My friend loves playing Destiny and keeps telling me to get it. Too bad I have a PS4 and he has an Xbox One.

I read an interview with one of the game's designer's and he said that cross-platform play was possible from a technical standpoint but they didn't want people to complain about others doing better because of using a newer system, which is a dumb complaint but I can imagine people making it. What I think they should have done is offer servers with cross-platform for those who want it and servers for specific systems for those who care about that.

Well ... I mean XBO and PS4 are about as new as each other, so that I don't get.

I haven't played Transistor, but you should play Bastion first.

Hmm, I do have it thanks to the Humble Bundle...

I did beat FF2 a long time ago.  The levelling system is messed up, but otherwise, not that bad of a game.

DKC Returns and Tropical Freeze have such awesome level designs, I just wish they weren't so gosh darn hard!

No, FFII isn't bad and the GBA version is probably the most player-friendly version too. But it's not a game I'll ever go back to play again. Unlike these brutal new DKC games! Smile

Apart from FFXIII those are all fantastic games for the most part. Wolfenstein, Bayonetta, and Dead Space 2 are some of the best of this gen IMO.

Apotheon is far from a bad game. It does have problems but I enjoyed the hell out of it. And I retardedly picky with games.

The main complaint most people have with FFXIII is its extreme linearity and to be honest I don't think that will bother me all that much. I've never been a big fan of open world games, for instance. Now the game's slow start, that will no doubt be very annoying but we'll see.

I'm drowning in great games over here. It's hard to know what to play sometimes lol.

I want to see that fluffiness. No. I want to FEEL that fluffiness. This is an ad idea totally missed by Nintendo. "DKC: Tropical Freeze is so amazing, you can FEEL the fluffiness" - and have DK pop out of the screen and give the player a face full of fluff. Laughter = SOLD.

DK is almost like Sully from Monsters, inc. lol

I just bought DKC: Tropical Freeze myself and am loving it! Indeed it is hard, but also awesome! Love the mine cart levels, pure crazy.

We just got to the third world but haven't been able to play since we moved. That shared lives thing is rough though.

That God of War Collection was what I was playing when my first PS3 got the YLOD. I think Kratos would have been proud though. I was so pissed off I ripped that damn thing apart with my bare hands trying to get my game out lol. Hopefully you won't encounter the same issue. On a lighter note I really like the first Resistance. Did you play that?

daftman

Yikes! Yeah, hopefully I have no issues like that. And no...I haven't played Resistance 1 yet. But now I have the whole trilogy! lol

What he means is, his wife keeps dying in DKC and using up all the lives. Lol. But thanks for being nice,  honey.

I die too sometimes! There was that one level, um, with the stuff?
