This guy really hates this game. He gave the game a try and hated it. Doesn't really get the Souls series. From what I read, he describes every Souls game experience I've had, but you eventually get over hurdles if you work enough, or learn to adapt--similar to Monster Hunter I suppose, which I also really enjoy. There's like 18,000 comments below it.

I've never thought these games were easy, and even after playing the previous games I am hesitant to play this right away, at least until they patch load times. I like that he's honest and warning casual players that this game feals unfair, but honestly I think he is robbing someone the chance to try it, and I don't think Dark Souls 2 was even that hard at all, except for maybe the DLC portions, but anyway.

Oh, and for the record, I haven't played the game yet.

To be fair the intro is the roughesto it's ever been. It expects you to have played souls before and gives less explanation to anything than even dark souls did.

However, I must say it is more forgiving. You don't lose this games version of humanity upon death, there aren't many bottomless pits and fall damage is VERY lenient, and items are a bit less cryptic in their description overall. Like souls, once you get in the groove the game actually feels kinda easy.

and isn't this how these games work, isn't it part of the appeal? You have to break through the surface first before getting to the real substance. And as for rewards? Yeah, I usually play with a basic weapon as much as I can before upgrading, and I can usually get pretty far before upgrading, or I'll at least try different weapons until I get a feel for one. I also run around naked unless there is poison or whatever. But still, it's very typical of the type of complaints people had about Demon's Souls, so it's to be exptected I guess.

Not a review, but an article. Not everyone's going to like the Souls games. I don't.

I'm not a big fan of hard games, but I give them a shot if they look fun.  I usually wait for a drop in their price though.

Wow I wish my game reviews got that many comments!  :)

The Souls games are hardcore games. Casuals need not apply. Some people will just hate it for its difficulty others will love it. It's not going to be a mainstream hit anytime soon. It's for players who have patience and want to figure it out. I, however, am in between those two groups and love the games for their style but have trouble sticking with the gameplay.

Axe of the Blood God podcast today is talking about the game and it's being compared, in visual style, more closely to the original Demon's Souls, which makes my pleasure/fear nerves tingle with excitement. I think I might be getting a PS4 this year to play (or at least take a look, cause I suck at these games) it.

I agree. But I think the controversy that's forming has more to do with the responsibilty of the reviewer to tell the audience that the game isn't for casual players, and if it isn't for everybody, then it shouldn't be highly praised. Not my opinion, but that seems to be the opinion in the article and a new one on Forbes website where he actually takes issue with journalists for praising the game.

I didn't have any issue with the IGN article, but this one I didn't really like.

i never really got into the Souls games and still picked up this game and am having a blast.  A buddy at work also got a copy and seems to be enjoying it as well, and I wasn't expecting that.

Well actually, this is the point I was getting at. You came into this game cold and was able to enjoy it. Warning people to stay away from something they don't know they might like, I think is wrong. So yeah, you can say the game is great and rewarding and hard and also say it's not fore everyone while giving it praise. The Forbes articles takes issue with journalists who praise the game, which is just dumb. It really deserves 18K comments. I don't have issue with the IGN article either, I was just surprised to see so  many comments for an article that says, the game is good, but I am bad at it.

I just thought of something else that makes the Forbes article rub me the wrong way.  You aren't going to give this review to just anybody.  Yes, you might not want to give it to the diehard Souls fan, but you can't give it to somebody who normally reviews iOS games.

I'm honestly surprised that the game is as popular as it is? Not to say the game is bad, I haven't played it, but it has a reputation for being difficult preceding it, and so why are these people so surprised? And actually, both of these journalists haven't finished the game either yet. It's all just so odd to me. It seems like they feel like the game is challenging their integrity as journalists or something? How are you doing with the game by the way? Is it as hard as people are exagerating, or is there just a steep curve or something? I gotta admit, that part of the fun with these Souls games is reading reactions! Mmmm, so good with coffee.

I am enjoying it immensly and hope to write an early impressions blog.  I think that the more interesting story is my friend at work, who is more of a FIFA and shooter kinda guy, but he is devouring this game.

From everything I've heard, most people are raving about it and the metacritic score is now 93 which is fantastic. These few naysayers are certainly in the minority.
