Everything Old Is New Again?

I started the year playing a number of older games, and with the release of RE0 soon and all the other remakes this year, it seems like the remake trend is becoming more normalized? I don’t have that much of an issue with this, because older games look terrible blown out on my HD TV, and so any little help to clean up good old games is appreciated.

The Witcher 1: Enhanced Edition (Steam)
I loved Witcher 2 & 3, but I’ve never played the first game, mostly because the game ran horribly on my PC at the time. The newer enhanced version looks much better than I remember and it runs pretty smooth now and looks really terrific. I’m not sure how many improvements were made to the first game, since I never played it, but it does offer a retro control scheme, so I can play it like an old school RPG with a top down birds-eye view and auto combat similar to a MOBA. This all makes the game easier to get through, and I’m curious to experience the story and I’m really enjoying it all. I’m a bit surprised at how similar it all plays feels to Witcher 2 & 3, control-wise and its story dialog options. It’s still all about potions, contracts and characters. God forbid any of the people in any of these game do anything to help themselves without the need of a Witcher. My God!

Lighting Returns (Steam)

I’m a FFXIII defender. I enjoyed all of the games in the series, but Lighting Returns most of all. Why? It was just a weird and bizarre story, world and game mechanic. The doomsday clock countdown and removal of a grind leveling system was a great decision to freshen things up. You don’t have to manage characters, it’s just you and your garbs to customize. On PC, you get all the DLC costumes it seems, and it looks much better and loading times are more tolerable. I’m loving it all over again. Too bad we’ll never get another weird game like this.

Resident Evil Remake (PS4)

I’ve been playing the Resident Evil 1 Remake on PS4 in preparation for RE0. It’s funny because, playing these games back to back I can see how really different they all are. Re1 feels totally different from Re2 and Re0, each remixing the survival horror formula that seems to have disappeared from gaming, except for the few walking simulators that are out there right now. Offering new control schemes and freshening up the visuals make the experience all worthwhile again.

Devil May Cry HD Collection (PS3)

I really enjoyed DMC, the latest Devil May Cry game in the series, but my introduction to the series happened with DMC3 on PS2 and I’ve never played the first two games in the series. Offering up all three games in HD for $6 on PSN was a wonderful surprise, and I’m really enjoying the Resident Evil 1 style puzzle/castle/mansion design of DMC1.

Now I’m looking forward to RE0, Dragons Dogma on PC.

I tried to like Final Fantasy XIII games, I really did, and there's things about them I like. But I just couldn't get into them!

I have that problem with certain games too. The combat is so much fun though.

I'm quite excited for the official Resident Evil 2 remake. I think remakes are great. It's gives new life into older games. I'm hoping RE 3 joins the list along side Code Veronica.

Thats what I want too. I want HD upgrades of all those older Square Enix survival horror games like Parasite Eve, Dino Crisis, etc.

I'm ok with HD remakes as well, since in most cases I never owned the original.

I bought the trilogy of PS2 GTA games for my PS4. They still look like shit, but at least they are playable, unlike on Steam where the controls were just awful (for a game series known for wonky controls even).

Yup. I bought GTA Vice city on PSN (PS2) and it looks awful. I'm all for playing originals, but they look like crap unless you have an older TV or uprezzer which are fucking expensive. Emulators on PC work wonders, but you need a nice PC to get things to work properly.

I mean .... they looked like shit then and they look like shit now. They did uoscale all the PS2 re-releases I believe, but ... yeah, GTA on PS2 never looked pretty even by my standards back then.

Oh. Okay. I only say this because I remember playing San Andreas and it looked decent. But I don't know if you can compare PC and console version of games? PSOne games look great on VITA. Wish PS2 games were playable on VITA.

I have them on both PS4 and Steam, I actually bought a bundle on Steam for less that also included GTA IV and Liberty City Stories a while ago, but the controls on PC were awful and I needed a software program just to fix them.

They both look like shit though, PC and PS4. I'm not budging on this: the PS2 GTAs were never graphically exceptional in my eyes and I grew up playing or watching them. lol

At least in my opinion. If you like the art style, I have no beef with that, just never loved the look.

I am just started playing Dmc: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition for PS4. I have been meaning to play it for sooo long. It's dark and the combat is pretty good, like what I am playing so far.

The original Devil May Cry for PS2 is my favorite in the series. I remember being blown away by the visuals way back in the PS2 days. It plays perfect and I love everything about that game. I like when you fight the bosses how Dante has his one-liners. Devil May Cry 2 is not as good and part 3 is really hard. I have that HD collection too, it's awesome.

I bought that Resident Evil Origins Collection for PS4. I have never played REmake before, so looking forward to playing that as well.

I especially enjoyed the visuals and sound design in DMC, combat aside. I liked the story and characters too.

I have RE0 preloaded on PS4 and will probably play tonight. Just got through REmake1 and it was a very satisfying experience. I hope you enjoye the games. They still stand up pretty well in my opinion, and I haven't found a comparable experience besides maybe Bloodborne, or Souls games. Playing late at night in the dark with a pair of headphones on is a nightmare! In a good sense.

I'm not into buying HD remakes of games I already own but yeah the look of older stuff on HDTVs is a pain. I was never too fond of the first Resident Evil. I own a couple of versions of it but I never ventured far into it.

I hear ya on the pain. I don't think that getting bundled HD games on the cheap is a bad deal though.
