I read something online recently about how shit the resident evil series has became. The fanboy in me immediately went into defensive mode even though I kind of agreed with what was said. It's the usual argument. Mainly that RE 0,1,2,3,CV are great, and 4,5,6, rev just suck. I like all of them, but prefer replaying the classic series myself.  The thing that bothered me was that there was no mention in the anti-capcom rant of RE0Remake or RE2Remake (which is supposed to be due this year).

Why does this so-called RE fan who loves the same games I do, not know about the remakes to get excited about? The HD re-issues have been a success and gives us old school fans a nice appetizer between big releases. Capcom needs to do a better job of advertising I guess, cause that new MP shooter seems to be making a lot of people mad, although I've read that it's actually really fun? I might try it out, I don't know.

the very idea of a Resident Evil 2 remake makes me freaking excited. I loved playing that game originally, and having it updated and being able to play it again is just too awesome. I played that and Code Veronica pretty religiously back in the day.

So 2 is like a day one purchase for me for sure.

I didnt even know that and HD version of code veronica existed on PSN. Now I'm excited for that too. Its not a REmake, but more of an update I guess. But, still.

Chessa and I just started RE6 the other night and that's been the first one where I felt the game just flat-out sucked. Even RE5 had some redeeming qualities even though I wouldn't say that I particularly loved it. RE4 was definitely the turning point in the series, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't one of my favorites. REmake was also fantastic and like Matt, I'm extremely excited for the RE2make.

I think my biggest problem with the series is that it's losing touch with what it once was. There's no more thoughtful puzzles. No more ambiance. No more subtlety. It's become an in-your-face zombie shooting gallery. Quite frankly, there are a hundred other games on the market that are basically that.

The story around RE was never award winning, but even that seems to have completely jumped the shark. And since that's become so much more important to the series, its subpar quality really stands out more than it did before.

I haven't played through all of Revelations yet and still have Revelations 2 on my shelf, but that seems to be the subseries that's carrying the torch of the original few games. I'll be curious to see what they do with 7, but I can't say I have high hopes of them doing a proper reboot.

I have Revelations 2 Part 1, need to get back to it. It was $2 for me. lol

This new 3rd person shooter from Umbrella Corps perspective actually looks kind of interesting, but I can see why people would be pissed. Maybe when the movies did well, they started giving fans of those what they thought RE games were like?

People getting pissed over that stuff always confuses me. I can say that I've got no interest in it personally, but I hope people who are excited for it end up with a solid game. Operation Raccoon City was a big pile of shit, so that's probably tainting my opinion of the Umbrella Corps game.

I suggest playing RE0Remake, as it looks great and has the old school puzzle and maze design of the original games. The partner system also freshens things up a bit for a change and the inventory box was ditched. I didn't really hate 6 and actually enjoyed the shark jumping ( and there were plenty of sharks ). It was so ridiculous at times, that I just gave in and went with it. I've always looked at the later games as a sort of spinoff action games. I can't defend 6. It's not what I want from RE, but I cannot lie and say I didnt have fun playing it. My main issue with 6 was the pacing. It really needed better save spots, or checkpoints. I think playing it on PS4 will make this easier due to the suspended play feature.

Revelations 2, I think was better paced, condensed and edited than 6, so I welcomed the changes.

I'll probably grab the PS4 disc with both zero and 1 on it. Haven't played Zero since the GameCube days, so I wouldn't mind revisiting it with the improvements they've made. Once it's in the $10-$15 range, I'm down.

I was going to wait for a disc price drop, but couldnt resist. I own both digital copies of 1 & 0. Main reason being, I'm not terribly happy with other games out there in the genre. Not RE series, but horror genre, unless you count SOMA and Alien Isolation.

I feel like the series certainly hasn't been at it strongest in the last part of releases. 5 and 6 I think we're the weakest link. 6 though I did like 2 of the 3 storylines which was Leon's and Sherry's. The remakes are great, I've enjoyed playing RE1 again and I still need to buy RE0 again. Heck I'm gonna have to rebuy 1 and buy 0 for the xbone. I can understand wanting to defend the series. I tend to get that way when people do that but I usually stop myself. Everyone has an opinion and they have the right to that. I just do my best to ignore.

I doubt that capcom will revert to the adventure game formula of the PSOne days. It seems like the only way for Capcom to redeem itself, in some fans eyes, is to go back in time, but they're trying to move forward or at least look around and keep up with the whats hot in gaming at the moment, thus Umbrella Corps, to stay relevant. I just dont think they can make everyone happy. A funny thing about 6 is that some people have their fav storylines, and they're always different. I liked Ada Wongs for some reason, as well as Sherry/Jake, and Leon/lady cop. Is it just me or was Chris running around with his french boyfriend in that storyline?

I don't think 4 and 5 suck. Actually, I played the hell out of 5 and it was my first platinum trophy on PS3. 6 is very sloppily put together but still offered some fun.  But here will always be this impasse between the old and the new because we are looking at what are two different genres represented in this series. RE began with at least one foot firnly planted in the adventure genre, not unlike Alone in the Dark. Over time, and this is even beginning in RE2, it morphed in the direction of arcade/action. It's obvious then why this series is divisive. It's not about what is "better" (although I think REmake has a more thoughtful, interesting design than any of the "shooter" entries), but about two different audiences and what they are being served, if served at all.

On a side note, it's funny how "moving forward" is always in the direction of being an action game. Or almost always, as some developers push their games towards pseudo role-play or action-rpg. But it's always towards the  lizard brain pleasures of violence and spectacle and never towards more cerebral, contemplative standards. And it also is a bit of bullshit because real time action was the beginning of video games, so how can you move forward toward it?

And it's these HD remasters that are keeping Resident Evil relevant. I don't think Umbrella Corps is going to do shit for them in the market or in the eyes of customers. It could be a good little MP shooter on its own but do nothing for the RE name. And can I just say that that view point is horrible? Why the fuck do developers see fit to cut off your left side peripheral vision. It's just wierd to have your guy in the lower left corner of the screen like that. It's like RE4 and Gears got it right and it's been getting worse over time.

Well 'moving forward' would be capcom using the ResEvil I.P. to emulate whatever shooter is popular out right now, further away from the adventure game structure of the first games. I actually joked last year that Capcom would produce an open world RE game because they're in fashion, and Umbrella Chronicles does seem to have more of an open arena free-for-all approach. As long as they keep coming out with remakes of the earlier games, I'll be happy, but they really need to do something special with 7.

Any long-running series runs across this. The Simpsons is a prime example. When it was in season 7, people claimed that it all went downhill after season 4. In season 10, it was season 8 that was the jump the shark point. Now season 15 seems to be the jump-the-shark point. In video games, you see this a lot with Final Fantasy and Zelda, with VI, VII, X, and to a much lesser degree, XII, all being the "last great FF game".

I think people just like being mad about stuff and RE makes an convenient target. It's easy to ignore what's happened recently (e.g., I heard that Revelations 2 was a safe but rather good entry) and focus on the crap of the last ten years.
