WTF does Popolocrois mean anyway?

(Popolocrois PSP)

I played Poplocrois a few years ago on PSP and it was a lovely throwback to 90s style JRPGs that I still enjoy playing today. I can't resisit a fairytale story complete with turn-based combat and an adorable art style. It is still quite charming.

(3DS)
So, of course I was interested in playing the sequel on 3DS. I was surprised to see that they added a farming sim within though, but it ties in  pretty nicely with the overall theme of environmentalism and the farming isn't bad at all. It's no Stardew Valley, its far more basic than that and actually kind of dates the farming sim in this game, but it is a nice feature for repeat play post main story completion. Who doesn't want a little farm with chickens n such while you run around the world kicking ass with a pumpkin faced knight in your party? How bout an adorable wolf or some shit talking pugilsit?

(3DS)

When you're not farming or exploring the overworld, you have to purify contaminated soil by shrinking down to insect size and run around underground mazes with plant roots sticking out of the walls. It's a bit like Zelda Minish cap, but overall ties together well with the farming theme. It's pretty adorable. Its no animal crossing, or harvest moon, or stardew  valley. It's a throwback JRPG with a little farming sim within, but I quite enjoy it. I'm also glad to still be playing my 3DS every now and again.

Yes. It came out earlier this year. Picked it up on the eshop.

The reason why the PSP Popolocrois game felt like an RPG from the 90s was that it was originally a PlayStation franchise in Japan that was so popular there was even an anime about it.  I didn't know the 3DS one had farming stuff in it.  I thought they just slapped the "Story of Seasons" name on it to make it more recognizable to Americans.

I read there were more games out in Japan and we only got the PSP and 3DS game. I've never played a Harvest Moon game, but it seems like that influenced the farming bits in this game. Marvelous is the dev, and they make a bunch of quirky anime JRPGs. I believe Marvelous mad a "story of seasons" game prior to Popolocrois and just mashed the farming sim into it. At least thats what I gather from looking at screenshots of the games.

I have been meaning to pick this one up but the new SOS main title was announced and it ended up taking my time off it. We havent even gotten an announcement that it is heading here yet but a girl on one of my facebook groups translates all the announcements they make and well, its sounding super fun. I will though pick this up at some point.

I was following the game because I played the PSP version and I remember it being covered on many sites. It has average reviews, but I like classic style RPGs so it rates higher with me. It's a pretty adorable game if you like that sort of thing. It's like a baby MMO, although solo mode. I like it.

I remember the first one and wanting to play it when it came out. I guess I missed out.

It was a good game. Scratched that retro RPG itch!
