BaD: Supernatural Season 1 Complete Thoughts

Okay, so I've been watching the show after a decade long hiatus.  I've watched episodes here and there on broadcast TV but very sporadically over the years. I have never really binge watched anything because I don't have the patience or time to do that, (except Stranger Things because its 8 episodes) and I've been watching at least 2 episodes a day for a couple of weeks now, thats 22 episodes total.

I kind of forgot that the TV show, although having an episodic format, actually has an interesting overarching main story regarding the brothers and their missing father, at least in season 1. With each episode, although self-contained narratively, we get clues about their fathers disappearance, and a bit more about the relationship between the two brothers, in particular Sam's magic premonition abilities and telepathic powers. Its a bit of a mix of Harry Potter and X-Men, plus the adventure of Ghost Busters or Scooby Doo. Basically, watching all episodes together back-to-back paints a clearer picture and makes it more enjoyable than waiting a full week for a new episode or watching it over a year. It feels like a really, really long movie and the ending really pays of BIG! Actually, the ending was so good, I starting watching and getting into the second season so really, I'm like half way of season 2 right now, which explores more of the mythology of the world.

One of the things I really enjoye about the show are the visuals. This show is really beautifully dark. Not just in a cheap haunted house halloween kind of way, but it has a high black and white contrast look to the whole thing, kind of like a Tim Burton film. It's more Gothic horror, except rural America which is an interesting twist. The brothers cruise around in a cool black impala looking kind of like a hearse. The soundtrack is also very good. It's a lot of classic rock which fits the rural American setting, with a bit of contemporary rock in between. I'm not sure where the show gets bad yet, as I'm enjoying every episode so far and look forward to more. There are also novels and an anime which is cool if I ever run out of show.

I'm amazed this became such a big thing.  I sort of remember it being on along with One Tree Hill -- or am I remembering wrong?  And now it's like an institution.  Crazy.

It has a pretty large loyal fanbase thats kept it alive for years. Unlike other CW type shows, this is the least soap opera drama than the rest. The visual effects are quite good, even after all these years. I also think the main two actors are really believable. There is also a sense of humor and fun, unlike most CW dramas that are way too serious. I think even the superhero DC shows could lighten the mood more by adding a bit more fun too them, not so serious all the time.

a good sense of humor is key.

It's one of my favorite TV shows ever. I'm behind a few seasons, but that's because I think nothing topped Season 5.

Goddamit! Now I can't wait to get through Season 5. I also know that the original creator left after season 5, so I'm interested in seeing how drastic, if any, the changes were to the show after that.

He left because that's where he had planned to end the show. There weren't any drastic changes to the show after S5, I just feel like they put in a lot more filler or at least stretched out a season when two seasons could have easily fit in one.

Never was really interested in this, but after the surprise greatness that was CW's The Flash, I may check this out.

I think The Flash is actually very similar to Supernatural in many ways. The chemistry between all the characters is great, they seem to all actually care about each other. It can get serious at times and I think the lead actors are versatile enough to be funny and serious. They both revolve around searching for their lost fathers and solving the mysterious death and vengeance of their mothers. Monster of the week. Great production value. I like the Flash a lot.

My wife and I watched every episode for several seasons and then we gave up for some reason. When an episode comes on now I have no idea what's going on.

I fell behind too often as well. It's much easier watching the episodes backtoback at least the first few seasons.

I think you sold me on checking it out with one of your comments about it not being like the other CW shows with the lack of Soap Opera like storylines. As someone who watches Green Batman (Arrow) and Supergirl, this would be a nice change of pace
