What I've been playing...

Devil May Cry 1-2-3 HD (PS3)

I bought the digital HD collection a while ago, and I decided to finally give it a replay, and boy did I get my ass kicked badly! DMC1 is not a joke. It reminded me of Souls games right away, especially the first real boss fights. No checkpoints, no autosaves, no automatic combos, it's all you and it is both refreshing and frustrating. Sometimes being nostalgic for old school difficulty should just stay nostalgia. I've managed to kill the first few bosses after a few tries, but still, having to redo the entire level because of a misstep is ridiculous.

DMC1 takes place in a beautiful gothic castle and has a similar atmosphere and design to Resident Evil 1 and the Spencer mansion. I think the game still stands up pretty well if you prefer the more skilled based type of game that rewards performance and style I guess. You can buy Yellow orbs for continues, but really you just need to "gitgood" learn and memorize like a pro! Thats the appeal of these types of games anyhow.

I jumped into DMC2 and 3 for a bit just to see how they differed. I've already complained about DMC 2 earlier mostly because its easier and moves away from the pretty castle to ugly brown hallways filled with trash monsters. DMC3 brings the focus back to combat and skill challenge with more interesting set pieces in place of the castle from DMC1, but overall a better game. I'm trying to replay through all the games in proper order and so far I'm loving the atmosphere and overall visual style and combat of the games.

Have you played DMC series? If so why, or why not? Do you like challenging games?

Guild Wars 2

I think GW2 might be my Mario. At 1up there used to be this question of which game is like your Mario? or what game brought you into gaming and made you fall in love with gaming again like new? I've played around with many F2P MMOs.

The Secret World is my favorite for solo story content and atmosphere, I mean it drops you off in a zombie apocalypse by a seaside town straight out of a Stephen King novel. For comparison, most MMOs drop you off in a safe garden area and hold your hand throughout the entire single player campaign. TSW doesn't really explain itself that well to you, which might be bad, but it drops you off in a Walking Dead scenario where you need to go from safehouse to safehouse and get clues abou what is going on? The mystery is what propels you forward. It's being relaunched again this month with tweeks to combat which a lot of people originally hated, but in the mean time I'm playing Guild Wars 2 again. I'm playing other classes I missed out on like Necromancer and Elementalist and other races to fill out the story, lore of the world. I started reading novelizations of the game when it launched just to show how much it grabbed me. It also looks great and runs fine on mid-tier PCs. Very solo friendly too.

Have you played Guild Wars 2? What is your Mario? What is your favorite MMO?

Final Fantasy XV

I don't think I said much about this game. It is definitely one of those games that I couldn't put down and played it every night for a month and still haven't finished it. I got through the story content, but need to finish up all the hunts.

Television

Containment

One of my favorite new shows debuted last year with only one season that was based around a virus outbreak in Atlanta, a sort of prequel to Walking Dead (not Fear the Walking Dead that is actual prequel) but its the same idea. It was more of a soap opera with a day in the life perspective of people living within a quarantied zone in downtown Atlanta. It starts off very slow with a flu-like virus outbreak that requires a few people be quarantied in a hospital when doctors realize there are more infected besides patient zero. In particular a cop that was sent to arrest patient zero, a teacher and students on a field trip to the hospital, and friends of patient zeroes relatives.

There is also a bit of racial and political overtones which are a bit too on the nose but made things interesting nonetheless. I dont think that race is ever brought up in Walking Dead except for Daryls older cartoonish hillbilly brother Meryl in Season1. In Contagion, patient zero is a muslim immigrant who neglects to visit the hospital when he gets sick due to fear of deportation. The infection spreads after his hospital visit and becoming the suspected patient zero, the government and later media suspect a biological attack and fear and islamophobia is turned up. These political overtowns disappear as the show progresses and people start turning more desperate and aggressive towards each other.

My main issue with the show is lack of zombies, for a zombie apocalypse. I know it's supposed to be the beginning of an outbreak, but it could have become the Resident Evil TV show since its the closest thing to it which could have been explored with Season 2, 3 etc. I liked some of the characters and political overtones enough to watch the whole thing and it kind of answered questions about how Walking Dead started too. The whole thing reminds me of Resident Evil, and there is even a Chris from S.T.A.R.S look-alike as one of the leads and police involvement/control and tactics plays into the story. It's on Netflix.

Also watching and discuss later...

I don't really watch Supergirl regularly, but I would have watched The Flash this season were I not so far behind.

Everything you dislike about contagion makes it way more interesting to me. I don't really care about zombies, but a political allegory sounds up my alley.

I have yet to get FFXV, since I'm not a regular of the series, but I do want to play the first non-turn-based one beyond the demo, since that's what's always kept me from the series.

Never played GW2 or really any MMO. Have a friend or 2 into wow, but just not interested myself. My Mario would be Star Fox 64, since it introduced me to 3D gaming and I thought it was a launch game anyway. Hell, it kinda was a launch game for the rumble pak.

I played a few minutes of 1 or 2 or maybe both from rentals on my older brothers PS2, but since it was my older brothers console I usually rented and bought for my GCN. I played a few minutes of 4 on 360 at my friends on his CRT TV. I found that one a bit repetitive and got stuck early on..

I like challenging games as long as the challenge is fun and I don't lose massive amounts of progress for small screw ups. Bloodborne wasn't my thing, but I'm liking Horizon thus far.

Im the same about not keeping up with shows. I fell behind on Flash and now I don't know what the fuck is going on? Supergirl has become more about relationships and I like the immigrant allegory with all the aliens. It's something that Flash or Arrow seems to be missing. There is also a girl-girl relationship with Supergirl that I haven't really seen on primetime television, so it feels fresh and new. I think it's one of the more progressive shows on TV with all the little political overtones and not just monster of the week which season 1 was like.

I agree with containtment being more interesting as allegory. The thing is that as the show progresses, people turn to survival mode and form gangs so a lot of the politics disappear focusing more on relationships. Since bodies start piling up in the basement of the hospital, it would have been interesting to have another threat to survive to keep things fresh. You might like it though if you want more thinky and less action.

FF15 is a blacksheep. It's so unlike any of the previous games, its practically a series unto itself.

DMC4, in hindsight, is a really good game. The new DMC simplified and streamlined combat probably to appeal to new players, while the hard core wanted another sequel that challenged them. DMC4 is also very nice looking.

GW2 is the game I have the most time spent in with a whopping 1489 hours last time I checked. I haven't really been back since My guild disbanded though.

I love the DMC games but for some odd reason haven't finished any of them. It seems something always came up to make me take a break from them, and when I went to play them again it felt like I needed to start over.

Containment seems cool. Might have to give it a shot.

I basically have to delete MMOs from my HDD from time to time to make room for more games. Otherwise I would have more hours put into GW2, etc. It is one of those games that I think about playing when I play other things and I love the world so I will keep playing it. I think we should just form our own guild and play new MP games together, that way at least there is at least one other person to play things. I liked Riders of Icarus a lot, because it has pokemon mount system, but some of the dungeons required at least 2 players which was hard to find for some reason. Food for thought.

I'm playing 1-2 missions per evening on DMC1. It's too much to play through in one or two sittings. The game difficulty is real if you're not skilled, even if you are skilled. The atmosphere is pretty amazing.

You might enjoy Containment. It reminded me of Resident Evil Outbreak, which was a MP game where you had a party of odd characters that bunker down in a bar and fight their way through Racoon City. It was easier for me to binge the series than wait a week for new episodes last summer.

I remember Outbreak! It was weird. If you want to play an MMO with me the free ones I have installed atm are Tera and Blade n Soul. But I can totally reinstall GW2 at some point if you want.

They're relaunching TSW this month so I'll be playing that again. Has Tera had any significant updates recently? I played a sexy canon gunner before. Its also coming to console this year. Ive got GW2 and TSW installed. Which other one are you more active in? I also have Marvel Heroes for when I want a Diablo grind.

For most active in, Idk. I'm kind of just dipping my feet and seeing if any stick. BnS is looking the most fun out of those 2 though.

Tera has 2 new classes, the Brawler and the Ninja. I like the Brawler the most tbh. There is also a new starting area, though I don't know how long it's been there.

What do you mean they're relaunching TSW?

They're revamping combat and gameplay, redesign new player experience. It's a business thing I guess, to make more money off it, but the combat changes were needed at launch. Not sure what details entail other than late march relaunch.

Also, LOL at the comments section at this link.

I finished DMC1 and 3.  I tried to beat DMC2 but that game was just too bad.  I played a bit of DMC4, but I couldn't get into it.  I would like to get the new DMC.  I also bought it a couple weeks ago.

DMC5 has a great visual style and level design. It's more of a re-imagining, but I like the story and characters. It's much easier than 1 and 3. I think the PS4 version is on par w PC with better framerate and performance.

Thanks for the info.  I almost bought it on the XB1, but I'll look into getting it on the PS4 instead.

Oh! I don't know if X1 version is bad, just that PS3 ver. had slower framerate than  ps4. I played it on PC, but I've seen the final collection on sale on PS4 loads of times and will buy/play again there soon.

I really liked Secret World too, but when I played it still had a sub, and I'm not crazy about MMO combat.  I do want to go back just for the story, but there just isn't enough time in the day.

I mean, no one likes the combat, although you are free to customize abilities with any weapons combos which I haven't seen many MMOs do besides FF14. The story is untouchable compared to other MMOS. I played for story content.

I've played DMC1 and eventually did beat it. Man, some of those bosses! I have a copy of DMC3 Special Edition for the PS2 but just haven't gotten around to playing it yet. Too many games Surprised

What is my Mario other than SMB...since I picked up gaming again in college the first game I bought for the Playstation was NBA In The Zone 2. I thought it was amazing, but looking back the graphics were terrible, but at the time comparing it to games like those found on the Genesis, it was awesome.

Haven't checked out Riverdale. Supergirl frustrates me. Here you have a charater with all the powers, yet always gets beaten up, and seems to always doubt herself when she's Kara. I also miss Cat Grant

For me Tomb Raider was a new Mario for me, then Resident Evil, then Demon Souls.Guild Wars 2 was like my new Mario for MMOs. These games made me love gaming again like a little kid.

I'm still keeping up with Riverdale. It's a very teen soapy show, but I'm interested in finding out who the murderer actually is.

With Supergirl, at first I was annoyed at how she is a damsel in distress all the time, but I gave her slack because shes using her powers for the first time. The first season was great the way she would get int DragonBall Z fights every week. Cat absense is more noticeable this season and the relationship with Mon-El doesnt make any damned sense although I do like the character as an antagonist for her?  The chauvinest macho vs the feminist. They're like Slater and Jesse Spano all over again. Hopefully Mon-El will get a real costume and stay on because he's growing on me. I'd like to see Kara with Winn actually and I like her being the strong one, like reverse Clark & Louise.

Mon-El isn't bad and yeah they do have that Jessie and Slater vibe going. I think the writers wanted everyone to couple up this season: Alex/Her Girlfriend, Supergirl/Mon, Winn/Jimmy in Superhero mode, Martian/White Martian, and even the storyine with Lena Luthor/mom. Funny you mention Lois & Clark because all the Teri Hatcher teasing is going to pay off in a week or so.
