Hey, peeps. Haven't posted here in awhile except occasional comments.
Gamingwise, right now, I've been all about FFXII: The Zodiac Age. I loved FFXII back in the day. It remains my second favorite game in the series, behind only FFVII. Although I might catch a bit of heat for this, FFXII was to me everything FFX should have been, but wasn't. It was an explorable game in comparison to X's long northbound hallway. It took the lore of Yasumi Matsuno's FF Tactics and expanded it greatly. I enjoyed the battle system, especially the comprehensive gambits. I took a day off of work for it's launch, which is something I never did before. For FFXII's fifth anniversary, I wrote a retrospective on 1UP.com that Jeremy Parish kindly promoted to a front page article as part of their RPG section.
If anything, I'm enjoying FFXII even more now than I did in 2006. I completed the main story back then, but got hung up on all the sidequests. Then FFXII got buried by my entrance into the Wii/PS3/360 generation and the novelties of motion controls and online play.
This time around, I've completed all my characters' license boards and have found a lot of the rare treasures I missed in the original. I've also made a lot more progress in the hunts and the Espers this time. I just defeated the Behemoth King and Fafnir, the latter by letting him kill himself with reflected spells while Vaan, Ashe, and Penelo stood there laughing their asses off at him. I'm going to take a run at Hell Wyrm, Omega Mark XII, and Yiazmat. FFXII may end up being my second Platinum trophy ever, with the first being FFVII on PS4. The only Esper I have left is Zodiark (in the original game, I never got Chaos, either). FFXII is a maddeningly brilliant game. Some of the bosses and dungeons, including Zodiark and the mooks you have to fight to get to him, are shamelessly cheap in their tactics, and you really have to get creative to win. My dialogue while I've been playing these tough parts bears more than a passing resemblance to a Samuel L. Jackson movie. I've posted some videos of some of the cooler things I've done with the game, though I record the voice tracks on my computer after the video itself is captured, so if you're wanting to hear me swearing like the Angry Video Game Nerd, you're going to be sorely disappointed.
Honestly, I've been surprised at how absorbed I got into this game. Even FFX/X-2 Remastered had to compete with a lot of other games for my attention. It's been awhile since I've set aside my other games to focus on one like this. I guess that is a testament to how many of the right notes FFXII hit for me. I wish Yasumi Matsuno were still working for Square Enix. I would have loved to see him and do another mainline FF game or another Tactics. Though rumor holds that Hiroyuki Ito, who co-directed FFXII with Matsuno and FFVI with Yoshinori Kitase, is in charge of the next mainline Final Fantasy...
And that's all from my front. My next anticipated games are Ys VIII and Ni no Kuni 2, probably with others I've missed. Still haven't gotten my hands on a Switch yet, so for those of my friends who have gotten a Switch, I'm still jelly. :)
One last thing:
This year marks my tenth anniversary as a member of the 1UP/Pixlbit gang. It was in May, and at that time, life was a bit in the way, so I didn't write a blog then. Back when I joined 1UP.com, my latest console was a PS2, I was looking for a hard-to-find Wii, and I'd just finished Final Fantasy XII. Now, three jobs and three step-grandkids later, my latest console is a PS4, I'm looking for a hard-to-find Nintendo Switch, and I'm finishing up FFXII: The Zodiac Age. Things sure change, eh? My first friends on 1UP were Cary Woodham, BigMex, GrayHaired, Rangergirl, and Chris Iozzi. It's been great knowing everybody for the past 10 years, and glad that we've kept this little group together in spite of 1UP's closure and life events happening and all.
