Sega is on fire lately

I've been liking a lot of what Sega is doing these days, especially compared to their spotty track record of years past. We're now getting Yakuza games like clockwork, Valkyria Chronicles is getting a console sequel, they're bringing over a few other games that were stuck in Japan. Maybe it was the acquisition of Atlus and the success of Persona 5 that got Sega going.

Anyway, they have 3 products of interest coming out, announced today at Sega FES.

1. A Genesis Mini. Unlike those crappy Genesis knockoffs made by AT Games that have awful sound, this device appears to actually be made by Sega and was clearly inspired by Nintendo's hugely successful NES and SNES Classic Editions. Honestly, most of the Genesis games I'd want to play are coming out on Genesis Collections for the PS4 and X1, and Sega Ages on Switch. But if it has more obscure Sega titles like Alisia Dragoon or the Genesis version of Mortal Kombat I, I might bite on it. I just wish Sega would reissue Saturn games somehow.

2. Shenmue ! and 2 HD for PS4 and X1. I played demos of Shenmue on Dreamcast kiosks back in the day, but that was it, as I never owned either a Dreamcast or the OG Xbox. So these games will be new to me. I'm told that the Yakuza games are basically the same thing, but much improved, but it would still be interesting to play them, especially in anticipation of Shenmue 3.

3. A new Sakura Wars game which Sega says is a full blown continuation of the series after Sakura Wars: So Long My Love. I really enjoy this dating sim/SRPG series, which was a sort of forerunner to Valkyria Chronicles as it was made by a lot of the same people, but I was bummed that only the last game made it over here courtesy of NISA, and I was also bummed that the series seemed to be done after that. Keeping my fingers crossed that Sega will perhaps entrust Atlus USA to bring this over to the US and it won't be stuck in Japan.

I only wish Sega had also announced Virtua Fighter 6. That series never got the love it deserved and I'd love to play it on PS4.

New Genesis collections coming out soon? Oh yes. I love collections. I might have to get that day one for sure.

Sakura Wars sequel? Excellent. I still have the first one because it had Valkyria Chronicles developers on it but I still haven't played it. I'm willing to trust them.

Cannot wait for the new Valkyria Chronicles.

I hope the Genesis Mini won't be hard to find like the NES and SNES minis.

I reviewed a Sakura Wars game on the Wii.  I don't remember much about it now except there was a cowboy lady who was kind of funny.

With fighting games as popular as they are, you'd think they would have a VF6 in the works.

I wish SEGA would bring back Ristar.  And maybe Space Channel 5. :)

Looks like the Genesis Mini is being done by AtGames. They said they're doing everything they can to right the last one's wrongs, but I'm not holding my breath. Still, Sega has been doing better, even Sonic games are good again after Mania (which is now getting a good chunk of free DLC). I really, really loved Sonic Mania

I'm hoping they port Yakuza 3-5 to PS4. I don't need Kiwami versions of those, but I don't want to buy a PS3 just for the older games ... which I'm not sure I have the impulse control not to do.

1. I might be interested in an official Genesis, if they actually keep up the supply to meet demand, unlike Nintendo. But as someone who missed out on Dreamcast games, I really just want to play stuff like Jet Set Radio/Future, Space Channel 5, Power Stone, etc. that I'm really interested in but missed out on.

2. The comparisons to Yakuza and the fact much of their creative teams are shared is what makes me interested in Shenmue as well.

3. A new what now?

You been playing VF5 in Yakuza 6?
