Finally playing a game I've been interested in for a long time

Back at the beginning of 5th gen, I got a N64, and was looking forward to games like Zelda 64 (Ocarina of Time) and Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon. I remember being impressed by screenshots from the N64 prototype of Mother 3, which Nintendo Power called Earthbound 64. The realization that it was going to be vaporware and games like Quest 64 were going to be representative of what the N64 would get for RPGS eventually drove me to get a PS1 and Final Fantasy VII. Mother 3 ended up being a Game Boy Advance game, and of course Nintendo still shows no signs of localizing it.

A game shop near my house often sells "reproduction cartridges", which are basically bootleg cartridges loaded with fan-translated ROMs of games that were never officially localized in English, and they had cartridges of Mother 3 and Mother 1 + 2 for GBA. They also had SNES cartridges of the DeJap translations of Tales of Phantasia and Seiken Densetsu 3, which was another never-localized game.I always wanted, at least until we finally got an official localization of it on the Collection of Mana this past summer. So since the Mother 3 cartridge was 20 bucks, I bought it.

It's kind of interesting so far, though I'm only in chapter 2 when the main story is starting to unfold. it's a slow grind at first, but the later parts sound like they're much better, and I have to admit the slow encroachment of the bad guys, the Pigmask Army, does kind of add to the atmosphere of the game. It also has decent graphics and really good music for the GBA, though I'd still have liked to have seen what the N64 or Gamecube would do with this game.  Would it have been a Final Fantasy killer? No. But it definitely would have filled a large hole int he N64's library somewhat.

Anyway, hope I can perservere to when the story really gets going. If Nintendo ever decided to release an official English version on Switch, I'll get it. I guess someone needs to say, "Andrew, you've got to face the facts. Nintendo's not... well, it's very unlikely that, uh... well, I guess you never know, freakish things do happen." (Ten points if you get this reference.)

I think it was Mother 3 that had music based closely on Beatles songs. I guess they'd have to redo the soundtrack to release it without getting sued. Those repro carts are probably the only way to play it without breaking the bank on the orginal cart.

Man, seems like just yesterday I was looking at Earthbound 64 footage. All my troubles seemed so far away.

Nintendo actually believed that the soundtrack was covered under fair use laws regarding parody. There's a lot of other stuff in the game itself that they would probably be kind of antsy about releasing over here without bowdlerizing it heavily and drawing an outcry from the 8chan crowd, even though they're actually more lax on content than Sony or Microsoft these days.

Hum. . .  I'll have to play it some day.

I'm probably one of the only people in the world who didn't like Earthbound.  Everyone has unpopular opinions and that's one of mine.  But I'm always willing to give it a second chance.  I did get Earthbound Beginnings on the Wii U.  Didn't like it either because it had many of the same qualities that drove me away from other NES RPGs.  If Nintendo released Mother 3 or if I found it for 20 bucks like you did, I might give it a try.
