Fatigue

I am coming to the realization that I may be hitting the point of videogame fatigue.  I remember this happening before.  I focused most of my time upon videogames, and just burned out.  Of course, it has to start setting in the moment I finish Crysis and start the sequel.

Since January, I feel as though I have been having a banner year.  I have sat down and beaten a slew of games.  Some of them I never thought that I would get back into.  I finally tackled dead space 2, the witcher 2, halo 4, and goldeneye reloaded.  I replayed MGS 2, both bioshock games, and enjoyed my time in Columbia.  I have been averaging nearly 2 games a month, and most of them were games that I already owned.  Frankly, I have difficulty remembering a time when I was so focused on videogames.  That is most likely the problem.  I have been so focused on gaming that I have not diversified myself enough.

Normally I prefer to be a well-rounded individual, as far as media consumption is concerned.  I like read novels, and graphic novels.  I like to watch obscure films, and any sort of sci-fi television.  I like videogames, but I am also a fan of board games.  Of course, I am probably not as diversified as I would like to believe.  I have been pushing off reading "the wise man's fear" and I really should not.  Patrick Rothfuss is a man of great beard and a skillful writer.  So skillful in fact that he has been recruited by inxile to write for Torment:  Tides of Numenera.  Then on top of his book, I really need to finish "the stars my destination."

What am I getting at in the end?  Videogame fatigue is a wonderful opportunity.  It is a perfect chance to read those books, and watch those movies.  While I would like to clear my videogame backlog, I know that they will still be there, and that I will come back to them.  I will never give up gaming, but I think that they may be put on the back burner...

On a side note,  I would not be surprised if I got a second wind, and destroyed some more of my backlog in the coming weeks.  Also, I have been inspired to finally play, and try to beat Metroid.  I have finished every other game in the series multiple times, so I think that it is time to beat the original.

I get the same feeling from time to time. As an older gamer[47,yikes!] I am not understood by most family and friends. That's okay...my wife and son play games,so they get me. But I do get burnout sometimes. More often I work so much I never feel I have enough time to game. About two hours a night on average. I mix in reading and movies. I have about 7 TV shows I'm very into. And I try to work out as well. Life is all about maintaining a balance. Too much of a good thing can wreck you,it happens. So I think you are right on track in trying to do more of a variety.

It is quite possible that I could be having xbox fatigue.  I have been enjoying metroid on the gameboy.

I wouldn't worry so much about your backlog. If your tired of it, than take a break and find some other way to occupy your time. There's more to life than games. I need to beat the original Metroid too. I don't think I've ever done it without the Justin Bailey code.

I think that some of the design in metroid is a little obtuse, but there is brilliance.  Specifically when you look at the sequels.  Metroid laid down a fantasic foundation.

Every weekend now I think about just leaving it all behind, but then I come to my senses and dash to my friend's place to play games all day. Am I to old to do this at 45? According to my peers, yes. But reading the NYTimes while smoking a pipe and petting my Corsican Mastiff just doesn't appeal to me the way Shadow Wars, Enchanted Arms or Etrian Odyssey do.

nobody reads the paper anymore.

I look at the front page and may even read what's there while I'm waiting at Starbucks on my way to gaming with a friend every weekend. I'm pretty sure that doesn't count as "reading the paper", but I've heard that some people do. Who they are. I have no idea.

Good luck with beating Metroid. Man, that game is tough.

We all suffer from fatigue. The only game I want to play nowadays is MLB '13: The Show. I seem to have no desire to play anything else regularly. Bioshock: Infinite remains the only game I've beaten so far in 2013. Yes, I haven't even beaten Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time yet.

It's almost summer and I'd rather do something else until the NFL season starts. Alongside festivals, barbeques, my brother's wedding and other assorted trips, though, is the continuation of building up my backlog of games. There are some AAA titles coming this summer.

That sounds like last year for me.  I do not think that I beat much more than Mass Effect 3 by this point in the year.

Actually, you can add Black Hole to my list. I've played about 40 games of it since it was free to PS+ subscribers. I'm trying to beat the score of 846,510 that Mark Bussler has on his real Black Hole pinball machine in the Intergalactic Arcade featured on his YouTube/DailyMotion videos.

I'm right there with you. I'm still gaming but lately I've taken longer breaks between sessions. I'm also not the most excited about the "next generation in gaming".

If there were games that I felt were must have, I would be more excited.   The Witcher 3 is the only game that I really want from next-gen at the moment.  So my excitement is a little muted, I am sure that I will become more excited once E3 announcments are out of the way.

Game fatigue stinks but it will pass. Besides, chances are we'd still be interested in hearing about whatever it is you happen to be doing. I've never heard of this Rothfuss fellow, for instance, or his beard.

Wow, he must be, like, a wizard or something. A dwarf, maybe. A dwarf wizard...
