Microsoft paying Third-Party publishers from showing PS4 games on stage or floor?

So this is just a rumor that I've been following on neogaf and reddit. Normally I would dismiss rumors like this and join the crowd that says, "So what? That isn't news. I expect that sort of thing to happen in the gaming industry." While this rumor might prove to be false, it is worth noting that the info. leaker has a good record for proving to be accurate, according to those sites.

Why does Microsoft feel the need to do this? If they are so confident in their new hardware platform and relying on the loyalty of their customers, why drop bags of money to prevent a competitor from showing their games? Are they not confident that displaying the games side-by-side would make it obvious that MS is superior? New games policies aside, if this is true, it's just another reason to hate on this company. Hopefully some journalists can ask questions about these business practices at E3, oh wait, Microsoft cancelled all personal interviews with journalists. I can remember when Nintendo started getting shit for doing direct to consumer video ads through Nintendo Direct. Not Microsoft though. Oh the hypocrisy!

I'd say shame on MS for doing that, but more shame on the developers for taking that money. Hopefully this is false, if it's true then it shows you how much confidence MS has on the X1.

yeah. no confidence. there is another thread on reddit talking about how PR companies have taken to reddit and downvote negative responses to XONE and adding comments presenting MS policies in a positive light. I'm sure it's common practice for companies to do this sort of thing, but isn't it better to listen to complaints and provide feedback to customers rather than dismissing them and repeating bullet points from a brochure?

I think it is going to get worse before E3. I would not be surprised if they were paying pubs off.

Though the source may have been one to get things right, I can't get upset over a rumor ... even if every single one ended up being true about Xbone.

Agree. It's just a rumor folks. My problem really is the lack of good journalism. Even if it is true, the practice seems to be brushed aside like it's unimportant.

"If" this is true.......(raaaaaaaaaage building) .....microsoft can go kill itself! Ah, what the hell. I feel this way about them already. Just another normal day for me. lol.

Calm down. It's only a rumor. We will wait and watch E3 and see how many third party games Sony actually shows on stage.

I put "if" in parenthesis. lol. This was mainly a joke post. However, ms has already done much to piss me off. Sure, I love my 360 but very few of us are "thrilled" about the Xbox one. I hate to be a pessimistic snark but ms hasn't given me many "positives" to be optimistic about.

My only hope is they learn from their mistakes and redesign "The One" multiple times until it's actually a "good" game console.

If indeed this is true, it isn't exactly new ground for Microsoft. They got where they are in the software business by spreading FUD (Fear, uncertainty and doubt) about other companies rather than explain why what they are doing was better.

In fact in most cases, what they were doing was not better in any way, shape or form but they brainwashed many a senior executive into thinking it was and had companies ripping out superior software in favour of their products. That's how they did it. They sold their shit to overpaid, non-technical CEOs who forced technical staff to tolerate their ill-informed decisions.

Why would anyone be surprised if they are doing something underhanded. That's business as usual at Microsoft. 10% product, 90% bullshit.

Trust me, this is not unfounded hatred based on fanboyism. This is from someone who has had to suffer their second rate software for 28 years.

This issue stuck out for me because I feel like gaming journalism is a joke. A lot of popular journalists came back from the xbone tent party and were really shocked at how players were outraged about the TV-TV-TV and used game thing. Also this DRM thing were just long standing rumors that became true, so I can only get reliable news from rumors on forums? What the fuck? Where is the integrity?

Game journalism doesn't exist. It's never existed. This is a hobby, and people that write about games are in the enthusiast and entertainment industry. Oh sure, there are people that write some interesting pieces about games, like Leigh Alexander, but the nature of the games industry (where PR is necessary to cover games in any meaningful way) is such that true journalism is nigh impossible.

They can ask the hard-hitting questions, sure. But all that will do is get them on a publisher blacklist, effectively killing a big portion of their potential content in the months ahead.

I have already grown disappointed with them over time. Sony has won me over. It took awhile this generation but the last few years so I could care less if the rumors are true but if it is, its ridiculous and desperate attempt by Microsoft.

Im not trying to hate either way, I'm looking at it as a consumer, but a lot of xbox fans were like MS can save it if its all about games at E3, nevermind the policy thing.

I really don't want to believe that, i know giantbomb have asked publishers about their licensing online DRM thing most have dodged the question so it's all very suspicious.

Suspicion which leads to rumors which leads to outrage, etc

Yeah, I've been reading this, too.  From the looks of it, Microsoft wants to create an illusion that the PS4 has less games than it actually does.  They know their console's image is as low as it can be right now, and they want to impress those who don't know anything about either system.

asrealasitgets

Yes this. Also I read that Xbox is behind on game development and we probably won't see all the games released until next year. Doh!Yell

I think Microsoft misunderstands something. If Microsoft spends time showcasing a multiplatform game, people watch the footage and all that for the game, and not the platform. Time spent on Call of Duty at a Microsoft presser isn't time beneficial to Microsoft, it's time beneficial for Activision and Call of Duty. Time spent on EA Sports just informs people about EA Sports titles that are multiplatform, and doesn't help Microsoft, either, in particular.

These issues should be more concerning to Microsoft when the games aren't even just being published on two platforms, but rather four, five, or even six. Some games could reach the Xbox One, the PS4, the Wii U, the Xbox 360, the PS3, and the PC. What good does it do for Sony to focus on Diablo 4 at a PS4 unveil if we know the game will hit a multitude of other consoles? Anyway, yeah. If this is Microsoft's plan, I don't think it will gain much ground or traction just because people understand what a mutliplatform game is.

I agree with all of your points. The consensus from forums on Microsoft's hush money strategy is to portray XONE as a gaming console and distancing itself from the "all-in-one" media box they showed last month. It would also give the appearance that MS has more games than Sony, when players on the floor try out games they will write as played on and Xbox, for example. Also, when Diablo 3 was announced for PS3, did people forget that the game had that obnoxious always-online built into the game? Is the PS3 version going magically let you play offline all of a sudden?

Yes it is, actually.

Nintendo only doing the Nintendo Direct stuff for E3 and now the Microsoft canceling interviews thing just goes to show that Sony is really the last group that cares for the people that made them what they are. Heck, the PS3 is still the most game-centric console. Xbox has had all this extra stuff thrown on, and the Wii/U is all about gimmicks now and they are only slowly starting to get back to the gamers, albeit far too late.

One example I can think of that I love is, say I had regular tv on, and wanted to play a game. I go and put a game into a system, and then flip over to the input for said console. On the Wii (don't know how it is on the Wii U since I do not own one), you would have to go to the menu selection for the disc to start your game. On the Xbox, you would still be stuck at one of the innumerable ad-ridden Live sections, and have to manually select your game. On the PS3 however, the game would have already started up all by itself. It doesn't sound like much, but it shows where priorities truly lie. And with the whole start-up thing, if you already have a game in or there's no game in yet, the default "section" on the XMB is PSN-related items. One button press to the left, and you're at the Games section. One to the right of PSN? Your friends list to see if your friends are playing games you could join in on. Everything else is farther down the line to the left.

Everything now is pointing towards the fact that Sony is the last bastion for actual gamers, with Nintendo finally slowly recovering from the Wii, and Xbox One... It's some thing that I don't need since I have a Comcast cable box and a blu-ray player. Oh wait, that's right, that blu-ray player is my PS3, my mistake!

The WiiU can play games on the gamepad without use of a TV at all actually. Not all games, but most.  In my case, my cable box is in a seperate room and I game on my PC monitor which has an HDMI port. So, XONE media functions are useless. We will see how it all pans out in a few days.

I normally would say ya that has to be false but MS's vibe has changed alot for me over the course of the past few weeks and ya, Im jsut not so sure anymore about them. Ive read a couple of articles about how they think their system will succeed jsut for the fact that it was made by them and gamers love their stuff. They have kind of grown too big of a head with the success of the 360. However I doubt that they paying them off could stop the PS4, if Sony does right by consumers which they have stated numerous times they will they should be fine. Im still all for my PS4.

asrealasitgets

06/09/2013 at 01:02 AM

All this was true about the PS3 launch. XONE is just repeating the mistakes Sony made 8 years ago. They thought we would happily pay $600 for a blu-ray player and ridge racer, which was a low price for it's time, but no, we all just wanted games.

It's doesn't matter, I'm still not buying a XB1.  I don't care if MS has every videogame on their console, I'm not buying one unless something changes with them.  I got my pride.

The real question is, "Can it play Animal Crossing?" I suspect no.

We'll find out when we watch the press conferences and search for footage of games on the show floor.

I used to be less sceptical but these days I wouldn't be surprised at anything Microsoft and Sony would pull to make money/ ensure having a buisness advantage. They have good reason to be worried, negative comments spread like wildfire on the internet and I ve yet to hear any positives about the 'one'. I'm sure it's not all doom and gloom but thats not what people are reporting! who knows what length corporations as big as Microsoft will go to to ensure they come out on top.
